It's been a thing for a while. Unlike Dashcon however the people planning the con have had actual experience making and being part of conventions so it has a good chance of not being the absolute mess, confusion and backpedaling that was tumblrcon.

No the real danger here is the SU fandom itself. While they're plenty of cancerous fandoms, SU is infamous for harboring genuinely horrible people. In fighting and pointless controversy is to be expected.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if someone gets maced or even stabbed, that's how awful SU fans have been associated at this point.

That's a good summarization of what happened.

They booked some guy, the didn't pay for their flight, their hotel, they didn't even pay them prior to actually even be there in that they wanted to pay them after they did their panel.
But then it got even worse when they then raised a bunch of money trying to patch the shit up through a kickstarter. They attempted to raise some 20,000 dollars to prevent their gig from being shut down because they didn't realize that they needed to pay to be there in the first place.
A good amount of cringy shit happened like a 4chan name drop, and being loud shitheads. Essentially if it ever were to happen again (which it won't) the place that hosted them will probably never let them get near their building again because of this shit.

The biggest meme was that they had a ball pit that someone ended up pissing themselves in. pic related.

like I said though, that video does do some justice, but there is just way too much stuff to talk about that it's better that you just look the shit up.

$14,000, and it was during the first day/night. They were dumping money into a sack. The video of that shit has them doing the Hunger Games salute and singing we are the Champions.

And some more details.
The ballpit was how they compensated the people who paid extra to see night vale.

The game room only had one tv and no real video game consoles.

They had a guess that anime panel with questions like "This anime has characters fight each other with living clothing". The prizes were breath mints from the hotel.

Attendees were breaking down and crying because they realized how much money they blew to be there.

The artist gallery closed very early because they were getting no business at all.

This last one I'm unsure of, but apparently representatives of a company called Dashcon showed up and wanted to take legal action.

Also, you forgot that hotel rooms that were supposed to be comped ended up not being so: the Baker Street Babes (a Sherlock Holmes podcast) and Noelle 'Gingerhaze' Stevenson had to pay out of pocket for their own hotel rooms. And they *weren't* cheap.

Probably not. The animation fandoms on Tumblr wanted their own Superwholock, so they glommed onto the then-popular animated movies (that conveniently all starred young, white, teenagers done in that similar Glen Keane/Jin Kim/Dreamworks-y CGI style).

Then they later threw Frozen into the mix, but not long after it the massive multifandom crossover fad died. Superwholock pretty much faded into obscurity after Dashcon, too.

Looking back on it, you could argue that Dashcon was pretty much the end of the fandom innocence era on Tumblr, because about a month or so after The Ball Pit, shit happened in Ferguson, and then the site dropped goofy fandom shenanigans to go full-tilt with social justice. And things have never been the same since.

I've been to a couple Star Trek cons and comic cons. I enjoyed the Trek ones because I got to see Gates McFadden talk and Jonathan Frakes. They basically stood on stage and talked for an hour and told humorous stories. There was stuff to buy.

I never made a day/weekend of it like some people, just a few hours wandering around and buying things.

A huge gathering of people who like stuff you like. Some of them you won't like, but some you will. Most conventions cover a vast number of things, from comics, to video games, to anime, and even old school movies. I went to a convention and in one small area of the buyers room (which was a MASSIVE part of the convention center, like seriously huge) there was a booth selling old cartoon VHS, Power Rangers and other old toy merch (including Kamen Rider, I still am sad I couldn't afford that fucking Kuuga model) and a huge collection of legos, there were dozens of booths selling old comics for pennies, and so many people in cool costumes. There was even a trio dressed in amazing costumes as Deadpool, Cable and Domino in armor with huge guns. I was skeptical at first about going to a con, but when I went it was SO much fun. Not to mention all the panels full of so much great stuff, I didn't really have any downtime of just sitting around waiting because every hour had panels I wanted to see, I even had to miss out on some because of it. When you go to a big time convention that is run by actual professionals, it's incredible.

All I remember is that some tumblr artist tried made some fanart of news story that had a pic of a park ranger and bear cup together and it went viral. She then tried to turn it into an animated series through Kickstarter and a combination of tumblr users being outraged that her original username had the word faggotry in it and the rumors of it being a scam pretty much tanked it before it even began.
