When did Homestuck jump the shark?
>>
The trolls, despite their popularity, hijacked the story and completely destroyed it.
>>
>>89792250
Did Hussie know that people shipped Meenkat and Aranea/Meenah and blew them both the fuck out?
>>
>>89792374
Yes, he fucks with shippers all the time.
>>
>>89792374
Did he realize that he made a 13 and an 19 year date though?
>>
>>89792250
Page one.
>>
>>89792289
The very crux of Homestuck was the kids and the trolls learning to work together to sort out their mutually dealt damages to each others' universes and survive the consequences together in a non-linear, confusing fashion, you horse's ass
>>
>>89792497
The original idea was four kids exploring a strange game, the trolls had nothing to do with it.
>>
>>89792635
the original idea was the most convoluted creation myth Hussie could pull out of his ass. He got the idea after the 'universe is made of quantum part-pickles' sequence in Problem Sleuth. He always planned on the humans interacting with some kind of aliens that had created them
>>
>>89792635
Citation?
>>
>>89793202
Acts 1-2, most of Act 3, and parts of Act 4. FYI Hussie only invented the trolls because he realized he had 12 DNA combos left in Pesterchum usernames after TG, TT, GG, and GT.
>>
>>89793369
Did he fucking say or write that himself? Don't act like you can look into his mind.
>>
>>89793423
Yes. Yes he did.

I miss the sense of a grand destiny the narrative imparted on it's fanbase. I still say it could have been more. Who here's also posting on the C&C thread on /v/?

All of his friends and employees are SJWs who demonize men and it comes through in his writing of all male Homestuck characters been wimpy and emotionally broken and the female characters as strong independent women who don't need no man.

We used to suggest that new readers read Problem Sleuth before they start reading Homestuck, at the risk of effectively giving them summer homework before they can take the class they want.

I propose that we change this, in the event that someone who wants to read Homestuck cannot be successfully dissuaded from doing so; instead, we recommend that they read Problem Sleuth after Homestuck, so that they can experience a consistently well-written MSPA with a satisfying ending as a pick-me-up from post-Act 7 depression.

Do Your Part --Do NOT buy Hiveswap

Pirate the game if you really want to play it

MONEY TALKS -- Andrew will be forced to re-examine the myriad bad decisions he made from Kickstarter launch to game release concerning the project and the comic itself, if the game does not make a profit or a noticeable splash of any kind.

Does he owe you a Kickstarter backer reward he never gave you, such as the promised right to beta test the game? Do you feel cheated by his decision to hand off writing the entirety of the game to a nobody from Twitter? Are you upset with how the comic turned out as a consequence of Andrew's focus prioritizing the game's disastrous development, in spite of what he promised on Kickstarter?

This, right here, is the reason why Act 5.2 is not a masterpiece (and it's even worse with the benefit of hindsight, knowing that's really all there is to the story). During Act 5, the story shifted gears very abruptly from gradually revealing new details about the plot and setting, to the protagonists just being told straight-up what to do and what their objectives are. Hivebent was designed to be an infodump, and Hussie never quite recovered from that mentality in 5.2.

I'd probably peg the best parts of Homestuck at Acts 2 and 3, because there was still a lot of mystique and Hussie was very good at crafting that surreal, slightly horrifying mood.

The best thing about Homestuck's shark jumping is that every single reader has their own idea of when it happened, ranging from as early as when furniture started being moved around John's house remotely, to the Act 7 flash. I point to the retcon, personally. But as badly as Hussie fucked up, he must have done something right for it to be so hotly debated as to when he went wrong.

>>
>>89812386
i think that's because Homestuck is a mish-mash of different things
i joined because of the troll shenanigans, so i actually enjoyed act 5 the most
but i also appreciate what the early acts did with the game references and worldbuilding and stuff, so i can understand people who were annoyed by the appearance of the trolls
same goes for the later tumblr-ey stuff: people who joined later or stick around for that kind of content are perfectly fine with act 6 or even 7
it's just a matter or taste, i doubt it speaks for the quality of the comic itself
in fact, such differences between the groups of fans can't be good, it only showcases how fucking incosistent your work is

with that said, if by "shark jumping" we mean deviation from the original Problem Sleuth-esque concept, then yeah, act 5, trolls and shipping probably was the beginning of that

I loved Hivebent the first time I read it, but re-reading it after seeing how all of those characters were either pointless diversions, petered out into pointless diversions by the end of the story if they made it that far, or Vriska, it just became a huge drag to go through again. Most of Hivebent is Karkat going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on, especially when he starts talking to his past and future selves, and after seeing how utterly meaningless his character turned out to be, reading all that text again is like being dragged across a field of broken glass. This applies to Terezi to a lesser extent, and just seeing Vriska's name gives me a headache.

Because Homestuck's ending was more like a bad breakup to a seven-year relationship than merely a series getting a bad ending. Most of us ate, slept, and breathed Homestuck our every waking moment for at least a handful of years, if we weren't around for all of them. It wasn't just the comic, it was the experience of having new content almost every single day, multiple times a day, from both Hussie and fans. There was always something to talk about, always something to see. Homestuck fandom was a way of life.

The comic ending so badly rendered every second we spent with it invalid, like a romantic partner cheating on you. That's why we behave like we've been dumped, rather than simply being let down by a series.

A funnier thing is the shittier comic it got, the easier it got for people to point and say 'It was shit since Act 1', it's like reverse-sour grapes. No one with common sense would say Descend or Cascade were shit at the time they come out, but after the horrifyingly terribad Ending anything was fair game.

>Why is it so hard for us to move on? Were Evangelion and Mass Effect fans like this, too?
I don't know about Mass Effect but /a/ still has almost daily Evangelion threads. Same with the Fate series.

It's not exactly the same though, because even though the ending of the Evangelion TV series is shit, End of Evangelion is a wild journey regardless of whether you think it's good or not and that suffices for most people. These days I think most people just talk about how shit the new movies are.

This, kind of, just not as extreme. Back in Acts 1-4, and part of 5? It was pure lightning and mania. Every moment, every day, there was the chance for an update. It was just constantly running in the back of your mind, all day, every day, at bed, when eating, every second there'd be at least one little subroutine running in your brain going "What the fuck happened and what's going to happen I sure hope he updates soo- UPDATE DID SOMEONE SAY UPDATE?! shit no it was my brain again but I better go check THERE *WAS* AN UPDATE OH GOD THE DOPAMINE YES TIME TO POST ABOUT KANAYA'S FEET"

SO YES, I AM COMPARING THIS SHIT TO MY GRANDFATHER DYING BECAUSE IT'S METAPHORICALLY THE SAME THING. AND YOU'RE A PIECE OF SHIT IF YOU SUPPORT THIS.

The only thing. THE ONLY FUCKING THING that makes this all better is that I only joined the bandwagon a month ago. If I had invested more time in this, I would've felt bad. Now, NOW I can just go on with my life. But I feel so bad for other people, who ARE actually invested in this.

Someone (my players) managed to collapse time through the soul of a single person. This is drawing all of time into a singularity based around that person, meaning all timelines (every single one, ever) are more rapidly merging into a singular and permanent Ultimate Timeline. The finale will involve the fusion of every single self and choice and potentiality that time has managed to create for every character, into their ultimate selves.

There will be no more time travel after that. No more doom. No more destiny or fate. Just their choices.

I just finished reading Homestuck for the first time last week, I understand I missed out a lot of the experiences by not living through the hiatuses (where exactly did the biggest/worst ones come) but even then the last 2000 pages or so felt weirdly paced and rushed, the ending as still pretty nice even if it did leave some loose/ambiguous ends (how exactly did LE get defeated, when exactly did the fight where caliborn's soul get trapped happen). It kinda sucked how we didn't get to see Karkat become this big great leader he was supposed to be. Apart from the development hell how is the game looking? Will it be a continuation of the story or a whole new thing altogether?

I think the worst thing Hussie did was just hand writing the entire game down to some rando from Twitter instead of writing the damn thing himself. Homestuck differently changed in Act 5 (although you could argue this started in Act 4). The larger cast and faster pace demanded timeskips and forced the story to show and not tell.

But oddly enough I don't think that is inherently a bad thing. Its an unpopular opinion here but I found Act 1 mind-numbingly dull because they insisted on showing me every single detail of John just dicking around in his house. Act 2 wasn't much better.

But then again I never really cared about Scrub as anything more than a framing device. Homestuck has always been a story where character took precedent over the plot. For better or worse.

Act 6, most definitely. The Trolls did in fact hijack the comic when they were introduced, but at the very least, they had a place in the series. Additionally, that's a greater fault on Hussie's part than anything, since he had the power to reign in the story at any point in time.

Act 6 is where Hussie began to straight-up pander to his rabid fanbase. Dancestors, everyone becoming homos for no reason (I don't have a problem with gays, but it was incredibly hamfisted imo), and awkward writing plague everything after Cascade. If I could turn back time and convince myself not to indulge in anything past it, or alternatively shoot myself, I'd do it in a heartbeat.`

Everything got so much less enjoyable after the Scratch.

Even with all the other stuff from before that may have contributed to the bullshit it became, that specific point was THE point where the series jumped the shark, by the standard definition of the term. There were points after that that were just intolerably bad like HOMOSUCK, a joke that wore thin after like. 4 pages at best, and went on for like 20 more after the point where it got intolerable (and was like 2 full weeks of updates iirc) and then got brought back again like 3 times, because when your boring obnoxious joke isn't funny you should repeat it many, many more times.

But The Scratch is specifically the point where everything STARTED to go downhill.

I DON'T recommend people read Homestuck, but if I WERE to recommend it I'd tell them to stop reading after the Scratch and just imagine that Hussie died and the series was never finished or something because that would genuinely be more satisfying than what we got.

If you're making a comic by yourself the writing is almost always easier than drawing. With a decided upon premise and cast of characters I'd hazard that a comic could be written out in script form, thumbnailed, edited, and re-thumbnailed in its totality in a fraction of the time it'd take to actually draw it.

His writing getting worse along with him passing off most of his art to guests was more likely a sign of dual laziness and general degradation than any proof to the contrary there.

His assertion that "writing is easy, drawing is hard" doesn't really have any meaning beyond "I spend a lot more time drawing than writing". He's basically making the observation that you can say a lot more a lot quicker with text than you can with images, but to conflate that observation with difficulty is moronic. All that means is that you can write a novel in the time it takes to draw a comic book, not that drawing a comic book is "harder" than writing a novel.

He'd written (most of) a novel and drawn (most of) a comic by the time he answered that, so I think he was speaking from his personal experience in both mediums. The challenges in art are unique from the challenges in writing, even aside from the time it takes, and usually require a technical approach that can be difficult to wrap one's head around, whereas stories and interactions are more intuitively felt out.

This example is kind of silly given Homestuck's level of detail, but for art with standards:
"Roxy made Jane's computer explode by sending a virus" is easier to conceive of and write a scene about than it is to actually go through the process of "a fiery explosion looks like this with these colors in this arrangement and the computer shards would come apart with these jagged edges and the force would send Jane flying backwards in this arc with her limbs flailing in this manner and and her clothes draping off of her this way (affected by both her figure and the force) and her anatomy is generally lifelike or at least passably stylized and her face looks decent and conveys this expression and my hand has been trained for many years to get the lines down just right" for every story event

Again, Hussie doesn't go for that level in Homestuck (because it'd be absurd to draw like that for all of the 8000 or so panels of a free comic online), but he's put in the effort before. With all this in mind, sometimes people just aren't intuitively tuned into what makes for good writing the way others might be. Is that itself a difficulty that can be overcome? Is there a technical standard it can be held to that's comparable to perspective or anatomy? Perhaps consistency, cause-and-effect. How about realistic dialogue, or motivation? Personalities, character development, arcs? Does a lack of objectively correct standards for these things make the writing process more difficult, or is empathy/social understanding easy for most to fall back on?
>>
>>
>>89832084
I don't accept the thesis that there aren't significant consequences for failing to write technically well, and that there isn't significant "intuitive" aspect to visual arts.

Your example of the "Roxy made Jane's computer explode by sending a virus" scene is kind of ill-formed, because you described the process for drawing the scene but not for writing it. A well-written scene would be expanded in greater detail to achieve other objectives depending on what was required: careful pacing to simulate the passage of time, character introspection to connect the thread to other scenes, aesthetic descriptions to attempt to invoke an emotional response in the reader, etc. When you actually take the writing seriously, like you would while writing a novel, it's not so easy to know what literary tools you should use or even what your objectives should be in writing the scene.

Of course I'm still acknowledging that drawing the scene would take longer than writing it. But there are just as many considerations to be made in writing as in drawing. "Her clothes draping off of her this way" is a detail that might be safely ignored, both in the visual and the text. But it's also worth considering for both, and if you do choose to describe the clothing in text, you can do so much more effectively if you have an understanding of how it relates to mood and a wide range of vocabulary and literary techniques to draw form.
