Androids are male while Gynoids are female. The terms actually predate robotics by a few millennia and used to refer to models and statues. They basically mean replica's of people. Android/Gynoid was then used to refer to purely biological synthetic beings, but that got changed to Biodroid instead so now Android means they are 100% mechanical.

Synthetics can be anything artificial, be it mechanical or biological.

They're still a progression of them. In particular their abilities and equipment aren't that much different. It is their ability to grow and develop that sets them apart the most. And both X and Zero are direct progressions over those earlier designs.

Also, like Rock, X's signature ability is his ability to adapt. And Zero has been restored, rebuilt and upgraded multiple times since his discovery by the same people that worked on X. Given their origins and histories it's a stretch to say they should have 0 (heh) overlap in compatibility.

In the second MM fighting game, I think it was the second one, if you play through the end as Bass, Wily unveils something showing that he's working on Zero. I think part of the reason Duo was there in MM8 and the second fighting game was because Wily procured some of that evil alien thingy and was experimenting with it and shit. I always wanted a reboot where Gadget was more like Darkwing Duck, in that he bumbled around for comedy but would fight villains and be super competent when the chips were down. The recurring theme of "haha he accomplishes nothing or maybe gets something done but accidentally" was repetitive and tedious and a little bit frustrating, though it was nice to have a female action/stealth hero in cartoons. Alternatively, pair him up with a grouchy non-cyborg detective, like how the 'first' season of Bonkers was more tolerable than the 'second'.
