Let's talk about the rumored back-to-basics relaunch of Marvel. Are you looking forward to the possibility? What are your hopes should the rumor be true?

In an era where Marvel is actively pursuing a very vocal base that doesn't really buy comics, is this going to hurt them from a publicity standpoint with these people? We've already got one of these freakouts from Marvel's new target audience in the vid below, where he's lamenting the return to more traditional storytelling because "the comics are just there for Disney to dry run movie ideas these days."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLh0EvwE3_M
>>
>>89785335
I'm pretty sure he meant conservative in the literal term, as in "not taking risks", not political.

Like I love Rebirth but at the end of the day it's nostalgia pandering and the fact that I like that scares me.

Shill your video somewhere else, OP
>>
>>89785388
>pandering
There's that word again. In any other business, it's called "customer service." It's listening to what your actual paying customers want in a product and providing it. It's good business and what every successful company does. But here it's clearly pandering because we're not allowing the company itself to tell us what we're supposed to think, like, and buy. Which is what Marvel has been trying to do for the past decade, what Apple was doing for a while while their shares started tanking, etc.
>>
>>89785388
So it scares you liking traditional comic book stories? Man, thats even scarier
>>
>>89785533
>yfw there are creators actually called Pander
>>
>>89785541
I like things that are new while still paying respect to characters

Annihaltion, Planet Hulk, and Sinsestro Corps will always be God tier for that
>>
>>89785335
He didn't mean it politically anon
>>
>>89785388
>>89785601
OP here. Jesus, are you fuckers so caught up in all the /pol/ bullshit it's immediately what comes to mind? Of course he's not talking politically. Spencer's been shitting on the back-to-basics approach DC did with Rebirth for months, which is why it's hilarious Marvel is rumored to be doing the same soon.
>>
>>89785650
Sorry I'm fucking paranoid these days, /lol/ gets triggered so fucking easily and way too many threads get derailed
>>
>>89785388
>Like I love Rebirth but at the end of the day it's nostalgia pandering and the fact that I like that scares me.
They did a bunch of novel stuff that didn't work and took the appropriate step back to bring everyone back on board, get the time to reassess things and then move forward with something that'll hopefully be more well received.

Taking a step back to a solid foundation isn't a bad thing if you were on shaky ground before - or in Marvel's case already plummeting at terminal velocity towards the ground.
>>
>>89785698
>mobileposter
Wew
>>
I'm sorta hoping for a comics crash at this point

I dunno why, would just be funny
>>
>>89785650
It's the audience Marvel has targetted these days. Everything has to be /pol/ related in some way even though your post says nothing about it and talks about just returning to traditional storytelling.
>>
>>89785533
>In any other business, it's called "customer service."
No, I'm pretty sure it's called pandering in film, television, literature, etc. Don't confuse media with your part time job.
>>
>>89785751
this. I want to see comic book industry burn
The comics the comics are on fire
We don't need the water
So let the motherfucker BURN
BURN MOTHERFUCKER
>>
>>89785335

I've been saying this would happen. It's like what Pepsi did in the 90s when they fucked up their formula and then brought back the old Pepsi.

I think it will work as a business strategy for them. They've alienated so many people they now have a chance to get customers back by simply reverting their stupid changes. It could be a win if Marvel plays it cards rights... usually it doesn't though.

We'll see.
>>
>>89785650
>of course he's not talking politically

back when he said it /co/ was filled with triggered spergs that thought he was talking politically
>>
Whoever made that picture must have serious mental issues. How is a made up rumour taken this seriously?
In any case, Spencer is right that a constant going back to the status quo is shit and the cancer of comics. Not saying i like his writing, btw.
>>
>>89785335
Does marvel have a basics to go back to?

What would be the basics we are talking about? 80s avengers and claremont x-men? silver surfer & captain marvel? Bendis Avengers? There was nothing basic in the last 20 years of x-men, their status quo changed every 2 years.

I don't think they have a solid formula to return to that isn't obscure as hell or spider man

>>89785712
marvel needs to completely revamp their contracts. nobody wants to work at them because indies are giving them way more money and the marvel work enviroment seems to be completely toxic. there wasn't a big name at marvel that didn't half ass their work just to get a quick buck
>>
>>89786492
Nice fanfiction. If nobody wants to work for them its weird that they have all those writers and artists. Almost as if you were making shit up.
>>
>>89786564
how many big names do they have left?
>>
>>89785388
>e end of the day it's nostalgia pandering

People keep saying this but nothing has really changed from the New 52. Superman is arguably less nostalgic now because he isn't in Metropolis and his family dynamics are completely different
>>
>>89786564
Behold! Marvel's masterpiece of art and storytelling
>>89785487
>>
That A listers headline is about Creators
>>
>>89785698
>/lol/ gets triggered so fucking easily

Is this what you have to tell yourself these days?
>>
>>89786578
You don't need big names when you're putting out Eisner award winning material like Squirrel Girl and instant classics that touch the hearts of modern audiences like Hellcat, Mockingbird, Mosaic and Moon Girl.
>>
>>89786345

It won't work. The "Pandering" is just one of the many problems that fans have with Marvel. If they bring back all the A listers and charge $4.99 for issue 1 then expect the exact same sales collapse as the last few relaunches

You know what would be nice?

Acknowledgement of things other than a handful of characters. Like, why are there so many X-Men missing? Why do we need to have every new legacy character guest star in every other book? Just make the universe feel big again.

>>
>>89786673
Nothing wrong with moon girl.
>>
So what if they're going less political, if they have the same writers quality isn't gonna improve at all.
They need to let go of Benis.
>>
>>89786604
You cleary don't read marvel if you think all their comics look like that. 4 bad books doesnt mean that their other 30 books look bad.

Your standards of a good character must be very low
>>
>>89786912

Cucked? Butthurt? Why? I was making a logical point. Why do you people insist that all marvel books look like hellcat when it isn't true? Or more important why are you people so interested in discussing a company you know nothing about and dont read?
I dont think all marvel books are great, they have plenty of shit, i just dont think its all of it.
>>
>>89787070
As long as he keeps selling, they have little reason to pull him off.
>>
>>89787072
Why
Shes a defined kid character that is developing and is not constantly going in circles like kamala or Damian. Its weird seeing a female supeheroe that young acting like a bitch. Shes fun and original, everything that riri williams isn't.
>>
>>89787050
He was pretty upset those damn MRAs didn't buy Mockingbird, yes.
>>
>>89787122
As sales show, no one actually reads Moon Girl. People are just mad at how Marvel markets her ("Smartest character ever, smarter than all those smart white males you love")

>>
>>89787122

>>
>>89787149

>>89787189

she replaces moon boy. she is called moon girl, in case you didn't notice. it's funny that marvel replaced a monkey with a black girl. congrats!
>>
>>89787256
Well, you're probably going to be happy to know that the book is cancelled around issue 16.
>>
>>89787169
Its not true, ultimates2, Daredevil, avengers or uncanny xmen are all different than hellcat to give an example.
You seem mad, how am i trolling? Im trying to generate discussion and you insist on talking shit about stuff you don't read.
>>
>>89787322

They're different. But they're still all bad. Well Daredevil isn't "bad" but it sure as shit isn't good either
>>
>>89787322
are all also crap, which you forgot to mention.
Ewing, Waid, Soule and Bunn are meh writers.
And only Avengers have good art.

You must be really dumb then.

>>
>>89787298
Moon boy hasnt been in comics for years. I loved kirbys book (i actually read it) but it had nothing to do with lunella. They just share names, she's not her legacy.
>>89787319

Ill ignore that racist commentary.
Its the end of the arc, don't make shit up.
>>
>>89787083
They are trolls that only shit on certain books to spread their autism.

Or the just don't read a lot of books.

Take Moon Knight, for example: some pretty neat art in there, putting the writing aside. Ans it's not even a house style.

Nova is pretty good to, even for a simple drawn art.

Occupy Avengers has some solid more in house art, but lol crappy tittle. So noone reads it.

My point is, even if you don't like less traditional looking comics, there are comics with nice art. And of course, you can also reado books with pretty good non house styled art. And they're usually fitting the tittle mood.

But trolls are going to troll.

I guess expecting serious discussion outside of storytimes is stupid, nobody reads comics
>>
>>89787560
Funny, that's exactly what I think about you.
>>
>>89787603
The only stupid thing is you thinking that someone would treat you seriously, after defending current state of marvel. People who are not shills know that marvel is doing bad, REAL bad. Some of them want marvel to be good again, others enjoy taking shots at marvel. But neither of them would go to great lengths defending their company, they way you did, over funny picture
>>
>>89787639
Why are you still talking about things you dont know
Look how you talk about "marvel" in general, you can't say anything particular because all you see are outrage pages posted on /co/. You are so filled with hate its getting boring.
I dont care about your general feelings about the company, i don't say its perfect, i just enjoy some books, like a lot of other people do. Get off 4chan for a while, read a little, calm yourself down.
>>
>>89787522
Yeah, yeah. Whatever.

I wonder wheb are you trolls going to throw Image into your annoying pointless wars.

Still waiting.
>>
>>89787716
Marvel in general is very decompressed 20 pages of adverts for movies or tv shows. The books are boring real boring. I'm not sorry that I triggered you, and I don't have to prove anything.

I used to be a massive X-fags, now I can't stand looking at the X-Men, after what marvel did to them with sterilization and Land's porn tracing art. Power Man & Iron Fist was a massive disappointment, and Kamala became stale and boring.

Again, I don't need to prove any cred. Maybe it's you who need to get off my lawn with your shitty attempt at defending this garbage

solid characterization? Going through my old X-Men digests the best period (John Byrne?) was when they dedicated a some space to just showing the characters interacting as people. Going shopping, hanging out, etc.
Gives the stories room to breathe and helps to establish characters as likable.
>>
From a business stand-point, in this age of super heroes becoming increasingly popular and making tons of cash in theaters it's pretty stupid to try and get experimental with the comic books and not take advantage of the mainstream knowledge of the average person to further up your sales.

I'd like to make it clear I'm not saying full-MCU shilling is what they should do, nor to sacrifice writing and stories in order to keep synergy intact, but having familiar faces starring the main books should be a given. Like having Steve Rogers in Captain America, not Falcon, having Peter Parker in Spider-Man being Spider-Man not discount Tony Stark, give it solid creative teams and consistent writing and if there is change then do it in a form that feels organic within the story context, not just throw a literally who nigress and call her Iron Man for the sake of it.

>>
>>89789819
New =/= better.
>>
>>89785335
I don't even know what that looks like for Marvel. DC'S rebirth is to change things Nu52 did. (Characters being completely different, backstories were changed, old stuff was either gone or non-existant.) Marvel didn't get rid of any of its old stuff, it just decided the old stuff wasn't P.C. or something. So bring back all the old guys isn't going to make it better. Also, Marvel's problem is their writing is trash and the events suck.
>>
>>89785335
>sounds like a toddler with a deep voice

>>
In my humble opinion Marvel should reboot.

But rather than New 52 they should trickle their books out like Rebirth. Start with the pillars:

>Fantastic Four
>Spider-man
>X-Men

And maybe a few other books, perhaps Captain America but beginning with Cap's roots in World War II, then when they bring out Avengers a few weeks/months later they can have Cap unfrozen in Avengers.

Also, in my humble opinion they could do some race/gender swapping if they want too. Like is anyone really going to give a shit if Rogue (just picking names out of a hat) or Hawkeye or Hank Pym were Black/Latino/Asian? After all it's a rebooted universe so shit can be different.

The biggest thing they should remember is to NEVER, EVER, EVER do another Civil War.
>>
>>89794463
Reboots create a bigger mess unless you're willing to throw out everything that ever happened previously and you make sure writers never attempt to bring it back in. It's simpler to just clean up what you have.

My biggest concern is that while going back to the A listers will definitely increase sales its no guarantee of an increase in book quality. If they don't get netter creative teams with the right people on the right books we will still have the same shit we already have.

Also if the continue to unnecessarily relaunch every 8-9 months it will inevitably make this pointless.

What people don't like about this is the later half of it isn't done by Peter.

Ock decides to open Parker Industries which Peter then just has to deal with when he comes back. Parker Industries then becomes this massive company in the post secret wars 8 month time skip.

We completely miss peter building the company up and even then Parker Industries being that big feels wrong its like hes become a knock off Tony Stark.

Ideally we would have seen Peter start it as his own small company and struggle to grow it over years eventually making it a successful business he runs in New York that's able to give opportunities to younger people who are like him when he was a teenager/young.

I hate getting invested in something, then 6 or so issues in I'm expected to buy 3 copies of this, 2 of that, 4 of those AND THEN the event itself only to have the following issues of what I was interested in be nothing like how it started.

Last thing I bought was Spider-Man 2099 before Spider-Verse.
I should have seen it coming, though.

They're just going to backtrack from selling over priced, badly written books propped up with in-your-face gender and racial diversity to selling over priced, badly written books propped up with "heroes" fighting each other constantly and cheap character deaths.

The politics were never REALLY the problem. The problem was that they couldn't get their point across without devoting half their page space to massive speech bubbles packed to the gills with Deviant Art tier preaching. Politics doesn't turn readers off as long as it feels like the writer is asking a question instead of standing on a soapbox and yelling into a megaphone pointed at your fucking face.

I feel like there needs to be a villain who comes in and just straight up wrecks the Marvel universe such that the heroes have to actually fight someone other than themselves. Then you can reboot by having the heroes trying to rebuild shit while the villains have been emboldened and continue to wreck shit.

Like, I can't remember the last time I saw /co/ talking about any villain that actually did shit. Do they even still exist in the Marvel universe?

>>people complained about spidey not being allowed to grow as a character so they decided to make him an inventor proper and later a CEO of his own tech company

Okay, fuck off, CEO-Peter Parker isn't growing as a character at all. People said post OMD Peter was terrible, which is true, he stopped acting responsibly in favor of a play boy type attitude. He was a man child, BUT, he at least had to worry about finances, which gave him some sort of accountability. Now Spider-Man doesn't even have that. Seriously, pick up an issue of CEO Spider-Man, I shit you not he acts just like Chris Chan. The sheer idea that because someone is making more money than they use to makes them more responsible is outrages. Peter doesn't even act like Peter anymore. He has a private jet, /loves/ traveling the world and socializing, and casually makes comments about how street level heroics is beneath him now. It's a character assassination. Just bring back pre-OMD Peter. Not dirt poor, but well off. With a wife, not some corny super powered wife bullshit that completely destroys the purpose of the relationship in the first place. And more importantly, he was responsible and held himself accountable to the work he had to do, not blowing off important meetings to play fucking baseball.

>Let's talk about the rumored back-to-basics relaunch of Marvel.
Sure.
>Are you looking forward to the possibility?
Ah-heh. No. We're still stuck with a hideous dearth of talent and that'll still be true even if they bring back the white guys.
>What are your hopes should the rumor be true?
Something actually similar to Rebirth and the current Nova run: bringing back the core of the characters while not dropping the newer elements that are actually liked.
Miles Morales being given to someone other than Bendis and made interesting. Robbie Thompson, ideally.
Carol Danvers getting a decent character story that isn't ruined by editorial meddling.
Monica Rambeau leading the Avengers.
And, more generally, refocusing on what people like about the characters and series while bringing something different to the table; a "something old something new" approach, if you will.
Also, Max Bemis on Deadpool.
>>
Main hope is that Marvel completely gives up and Miles and kills him off. Waste of a character.

To be fair they always completely were, but I will admit that doesn't sound like him except when he's pissed.
>>
>>89807009
>to help him forget the Spider-buggy

That's back too. Slott forgot the memo that it was originally meant to be a satire.

>Would you prefer it be the multiverse?

I'd rather him not be a James Bond esque character who travels the world. Hell, Peter's powers et is designed with New York in mind.

>To be fair they always completely were,

Not the point. Peter has never held himself at a standard of being better than the common man (except during puberty). No job is "too small" for Spider-Man.
>>

It's pandering if it's to please the car enthusiasts. Cars should be for the people on the train.

>>
>>89786492
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby style comics. That's their "basics". Marvel is limited because of how mono form their house style was up until 1997. The few unique runs they have prior to that, Claremont X-men and Miller Daredevil, are the exception than the rule.

Marvel just needs to do a clean sweep, Miles dies, Sam dies, Kamala gets depowered somehow and fades into irrelevance, Cho gets depowered and does whatever the fuck, X-Men babies die from the Death Cloud since I heard they can't be sent back to their own time, Peter's company gets shut down for some reason, Riri becomes irrelevant and fucks off, Jane's cancer finally kills her.

If the rumors are true, most of them will be dead soon, but there's no way Miles is leaving.
I would like to see how they plan on doing it. Killing them individually in the solo titles as they're handed back to the original or all once in another event.
>>
>>89813035
What do the rumors say? Who's being killed off?
>>
>>89813121
One of the circulating rumors is that Marvel wants to stop using legacy characters and go back to having the original iterations of the characters star in their own books. There's another rumor going around about Marvel wanting to bring back some A-list talent.
We still don't know if that's true or not, but a lot of people are really hoping it is.
>>

>In my humble opinion Marvel should reboot.

No they shouldn't because it'll most likely make things worse and alienate more fans like New 52 did.

Fuck you. It's people like you who thought making Wally West a black kid in the New 52 was a good idea. And yeah I know he's not that bad now but only because original white Wally is back.
