For a lot of reasons. One of those reasons is that most other batman movies feel like "Action Movie featuring Batman" whereas Mask of the Phantasm is actually about Batman directly. It's not some crime plot that the world's greatest detective finds himself embroiled in.

The movie is weird with its choice of themes, so expect the unexpected. Also, it's a little bit 2deep4u, mostly intentionally on the part of the creative team.

It just feels rushed and incomplete. The characters are very forgettable, the pacing is uneven and the movie constantly loses focus trying to do too many things. The psychic guys are the only part part of the movie that seems thought through.

Very few people at Topcraft ended up at Ghibli (really just Toru Hara) almost all their staff ended up finding Pacific Animation Corporation when the rest left with Anno when he and others found Gainax.

And of course Pacific Animation Corporation later became Disney Japan/Spectrum when Disney bought out the company and added in a bunch of ex-Sanrio (Shigeru Yamamoto) & ex-TMS (Saburo Hashimoto) staff.

Watching the trailers I was so put off by the uncanny valley mocap I immediately wrote it off as shit. But then I was gonna go to the cinema with some friends, but they weren't showing that much, so in the end I said 'fuck it' and we went to see this.

Holy shit what a ride. It really was an Indiana Jones movie but with all the charm of Tintin intact. The chase scene in Caraboudjan or whatever it was called is a fucking marvel to behold. I was even surprised the mocap actually looked better than I was expecting.

I recognize the Quay brothers as artists, but man their short films really aren't my cup of tea. If we're talking stop motion art films I prefer Jan Svankmajer much more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Zed9kIud5Y
>>
>>89779162
There's not much talk because not a lot of people have seen it, and those that have liked it, so there's not that much to talk about.

All the Little Prince scenes were fucking perfection, the story about the girl and the old man was surprisingly poignant and fit the message of the original book. The controversial ending I thought was really weird at first, but I actually liked it once I realized none of it is real and the entire thing is pretty much her trying to fix everything by going the cliche "defeat bad guy and save the little prince", but in the end she learns that there's no changing the fact the old man and the flower are dying and that death is a part of life. It sounds really bad but is executed much better than I would've expected. Only bad thing was the little prince suddenly being an awkward stumbling loser played by Paul Rudd.

That's because /a/ is filled with elitists that have their heads stuck up their asses. /co/ might passingly call your taste shit but they won't completely sperg out like /a/. The problem with ranking lists is that everyone has their own tastes and if you rank a title they particularly hold deal much lower than they think it is then they'll feel a bit miffed. Unico was just okay. I considered Chirin no Suzu but decided against it in favor of Arashi no Yoru ni which I consider marginally better. Did you watch Fantastic Adventures of Unico or Unico and the Islands of Magic? Because they're pretty different but get confused often and Islands of Adventure isn't nearly as good imo.
>>
>>89795868
I really like how the overall theme of the movie and the book is immortality and how the characters view it and experience it. Schmendrick being immortal until he learns how to master his method of using magic, Unicorn experiencing mortality and being the only immortal being to know mortal emotions, Mommy Fortuna's twisted idea of immorality. Pretty heady topic for kids, actually.
>>
>>89761862
American Pop is flat my favorite movie. Now it isn't the best, it has serious structural issues and a few scenes really suffer from the rotoscope, but it is one of the finest pieces of americana out there.

It would be hard to adapt the Phantom Tollbooth to begin with because wordplay is so important to the book. But even disregarding that, Jones's style does not work for a feature film.

I won't deny that the film has a great script with many great lines and VAs, my only beef with it is the Rankin-Bass animation/VA direction, it's just terrible.

I hope they do make that Live-Action remake of this and hire Ridley Scott or whatever to direct it.

It was alright for the green that we got, but those two movies I saw were still pretty cringy
I can't stand that anthro look, even if it is just for a couple minutes
>>
>>89802224
It was heavily implied that's what was happening, considering the noises and how long Celaeno lay on her, thrashing about with her back to the camera, her entire body flashing a sickly red hue. Obviously they can't show blood splatter and viscera flying everywhere, but they made it clear that Celaeno was incredibly strong and her talons were sharp, and they emphasized the violence of that death as much as they could get away with. That's the impression I got as a kid watching that scene.

Gotta read between the lines just a tiny bit I agree, but that's still a hell of a lot more than you'd see in a kids film today or in the past many years I think.

I was going to disagree with you but nowadays everyone that ''dies'' in an animated film nowadays is revealed to be alive like we weren't expecting, or dies off-screen by falling or exploding in a non-gruesome manner.

Maybe it's difficult to animate blood and violence in a CGI film
>>
>>89802359
I'm sure there's a word for winged people, horns too.
>>
>>89802410
To be fair, a drawn out and violent death scene like Fortuna's wasn't exactly common even back in the old Rankin Bass days iirc. They really laid it on thick with how long they lingered on that Harpy working that old woman over, back to the camera or not.

Looking back I can't think of a lot of other deaths that were focused on the same way. So I may not be entirely justified in my nostalgiafagging.
>>
>>89802580
You mean it wasn't common for Rankin-Bass to show that kind of stuff.

Even their Tolkien films all the deaths are toned down, even when there is no need for them to be, and the way they got around most of them is ridiculous, I get that Ralph Bakshi and Don Bluth or Nelvana were busy doing something else, but geez, Rankin-Bass?

First and only things you need to know before watching this is that the Blu ray/Netflix version is totally faithful to the actual masters and therefore the film looks REALLY messy and dirty at times, and, more importantly, you must get ready to pick a side when you finish the movie, because the ending polarises audiences harder than anything else I've ever seen.

Other than that, strap yourself in for a surprisingly hardcore talking animal story and enjoy.

Might as well share a story about this movie.

So I recently made a friend and he's into movies as much as I am. After introducing him to a couple of pretty great movies, we did Zootopia and Song Of The Sea back to back, with SOTS second as a slow-down movie.

So he liked Zootopia a lot and my setup's pretty deluxe, so I put SOTS on and we both sat down in the dark with the surround sound going hard. Fucker went completely silent during the whole thing from start to finish, not a damn whisper until the film ended and I turned the lights on to see that for the last half hour or so of the movie he'd been crying like a bitch.

This guy's seen a lot of movies, but seeing him react so strongly to Song Of the Sea really put it into perspective for me just how amazing the film is. He gushed about the whole thing for like twenty minutes after, it was beautiful.
>>
Thought I'd put this here too, because god damn if this hasn't stuck with me.

Sure, it's by no means the best Disney film, but I love this film for its fucking weird tone and appearance. There's no other Disney movie I can think of that's as consistently gloomy and depressing throughout as this, neither can I think of a villain as simple and believable as Madame Medusa. There's no magic or bigness there, just a crazy bitch with a big gun who just abducted a kid.

From the opening sequence to the closing shot, the whole movie feels uniquely lethargic and sad with even a surprisingly sparse soundtrack and possibly the most scratchy and grimy animation I've seen from Disney.

It's not perfect; it gets positively maudlin at one point and the climax feels somewhat out of place to me, but in spite of that, The Rescuers thoroughly burrowed into my heart and it just won't shift.

I don't like it quite as much for a variety of fairly small or nebulous reasons.

I think the most objective thing Down Under gets wrong is that certain elements of Bernard and Bianca's characters aren't developed quite right. For example, at the end of the first one, we see the pair going on another mission and Bernard - while still scared - goes along with it all because he and Bianca have gone through a whole lot together, but he seems to mysteriously reset a little to being the nervy guy at the start of the first movie, sans the superstition. Similarly, Bianca seems to neglect him just a little and while that works for the whole love triangle thing, it paints her as being a bit oblivious to Bernard's actions, in spite of the implied years spent together.

Beyond that there's a few more subjective points, such as the art. While the second movie definitely looks more impressive, CAPS and the artstyle they adopted for the sequel really did a number on the fur, making it seem like Bernard and Bianca are fuzzy balls of fine fluff, rather than having particularly weighty fur like in the first. Moreover the much more cheerful colour palette and artstyle strip the sequel of the original's more grungy and threatening look.
MacLeach is also a sticking point for me, in that while he's a fine successor to Madame Medusa, his plan and motivations don't quite seem different enough to Medusa's to make him much more than Medusa 2.0 and similarly he never quite manages to come across as quite as threatening, being more of a typical larger-than-life Disney villain.

There's also the general tone to consider as well, in that while the original was much moodier and relaxed, the sequel has a whole lot more energy and a fairly upbeat style all over, from the music to the voice acting. Again, super subjective here, but I really liked the original for just how much it wasn't that, how comfortable it seemed to be, to just be gloomy.
>>
>>89810312

well shit, I maxed out the comment field, oh well, wrapping it up now.

The final point I have is that there's a couple of story points in it as well that I didn't like all that much.

While Bernard trying to propose and turning into a ball of nerves is perfectly cute and the whole love triangle bit is executed fairly well, I think it's just a little bit extraneous. I would perhaps have preferred to see the two of them working together closely and as a couple, without the proposal bit. Marriage isn't something I'm particularly against in movies or anything, but I think I'd just have preferred that they left them just as a couple or had them married beforehand because there's already a really nice relationship between them.

And the last bit I guess is that John Candy really didn't do a lot for me. Orville in the first one worked well enough; he's a bird, but he'd also an airline and the pilot at the same time, that's fine as it is. While John Candy did a really good job at voicing Wilbur, it feels like he's played up for laughs just a bit too much, with the dancing and such.

And that's it. sorry for going full autism on this, it's really just a whole heap of little things that hold Down Under back for me, rather than one big thing.

>>
>>89810312
>>89810590
To me it seems like you dislike many of these things simply for being different from the first one. Then there is stuff like McLeach not being threatening enough which is just wrong and completely missing the point of the "love triangle": there wasn't a triangle at all, Jake never stood a chance with Bianca and she made it clear. He was just there to make Bernard feel more insecure about himself and take even longer to propose.
>>
>>89807198

See, I like everything about kung fu panda, EXCEPT the panda. Po always comes off as just Jack Black being Jack Black, not an actual character. I watched all three movies and liked them, but I can never get around that problem.

>>89808851

Not the guy you're talking to, but I think Song Of The Sea has the edvantage for me because it ends more conclusively.

Secret of Kells was a great movie, but it just seems to stop at the end after being faced with two distinct climaxes. Brendan gets the Eye of Krum and the vikings invade and proceed to viking all over the place, but seeing as the movie had led up to that for basically the whole runtime, it's really weird that the film just continues and we get a whole catharsis arc.

By comparison, Song of the Sea ends way cleaner: Bronagh appears, Ben's relationship with Saoirse and his dad improves, Connor accepts Bronagh and Saoirse for what they are and finally moves on, as does Ben, and Saoirse sings. All of this comes together in the finale clearly and concisely.

Definitely not knocking Kells, but Song Of The Sea just has a little edge for me on the grounds that it ends that bit better.

Watership Down is a blight on animation save for the opening sequence and I do not understand /co/'s reverence for it. Martin Rosen honest to god had no experience in animation before making the film and damn if it doesn't show. There's no original thought put into the film and instead, opts to transliterate the novel's words in the most unimaginative way possible. The biggest shame of is that all of John Hubley's expertise and skill has been stripped from it.

I'm filled with disgust everytime I look at this list. It's obviously made by someone who values faux-maturity instead good craftsmanship.

Isn't that the type of language he prefers, though? Not to drag this off topic any further, I just think it's delicious irony if one man's incredibly ridiculous crusade against cartoon unicorns was because he feels they are a personal insult to another cartoon unicorn he loves.

But enough about Unicorns, let's talk about Unicrons instead. Certainly not the best movie ever, still for its nostalgia buck it is a /co/ staple.
>>

>>89816583
I have never seen My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, so it's not my place to judge whether or not that's what I meant. And as another anon so aptly pointed out in response to me, shows like Carebears were airing around that time so it's not some bold new thing. Hell there were shows like that that I did like. It just seems like there's a lot more of that and a lot less films like The Last Unicorn, Secret of Nimh, or even things like Neverending Story or the Dark Crystal.

So you might want to stop jumping at every shadow. I don't know who hurt you, but sometimes a Barney is just a Barney. Are all you ponyfriends this defensive? And it's sad that one old lady getting gutted by a giant bird with tits is all it takes to get people to scream edgy like it's a bad thing. That's what airs mean, animated film is so padded and soft now. I just want balance.

Not that you don't have good taste, considering you posted Orson Welles' signature final role.

I did not like How to Train your Dragon. What is the appeal of it? Hiccup is so damn annoying.
>>
>>89818783
iirc that movie was new hotness around the time those images started being made. And the guy who made it bought into the hype
>>
>>89818448
It helps that barneyfag was just active around an hour ago when someone set him off. Thankfully the entire thread got nuked.

>>89818606
Makes sense. It's definitely one of the worst cases of creative meddling I can think of given it was something completely outside of the source material that became the climax of the story and, as you pointed out, the message to the viewers.
>>

Why Sausage party? Its really gross and not funny

Agreed. I couldn't finish it. It really wasn't for me.

>Hiccup is so damn annoying.
For my money, Hiccup doesn't feel like a character that belongs in the world he lives in. He feels like a modern day neurotic that's been dumped into a Viking village and has no idea how to adapt.

But supposedly this has been his whole life, right? Well I'm sorry, but I just don't buy that a guy can be that out of touch with the only culture he's ever known. And it's not like modern day shut-ins who have the Internet, he'd have to have been out there, interacting with everyone, doing all the same things because fucking dragons are attacking!

It's one thing to be inept at fighting, to have different ideas about things, but he acted completely clueless the whole time.

And supposedly he grew up believing his mother was killed by dragons. Wouldn't that give him some kind of motivation?

All in all, his personality is just too much at odds with the film's setting. I know they were going for anachronistic humor but I don't think it worked in this case.
>>
>>89818819
It wasn't the new hotness, it was a sleeper hit. People just found it impressive for a Dreamworks movie.

>>89818783
The DRAGON is the main appeal, obviously. It's basically Stitch as a dragon.
>>
>>89818325
>No, actually it's about edginess in children's cartoons
Clearly your lurking skills are so advanced you've somehow never encountered the man of legend himself in a thread or you'd have probably gotten the humor in the situation instead of taking it personally. This isn't the topic of the thread, though, so if you'd like to delve into the dribbling madness then enjoy:

http://desuarchive.org/co/thread/89813357

For myself, I wouldn't recommend it and hopefully the thread can drop the matter.

>>89818783
I've seen a good deal of hatred aimed at Hiccup just for Jay Baruchel, that he basically just portrays himself and that's it. This seems to become especially egregious when Hiccup has grown up and out of his more awkward phase. I don't know how widespread the view is, but I've seen more than once people wishing they'd recast him because Jay just cannot do any voice other than his own, so while Hiccup has grown up physically he won't as long as he's stuck with the same VA.
>>
>>89820112
But Stitch was never the main appeal pf Lilo and Stitch.

I just don't think a little edginess, for lack of a better word, is necessarily a bad thing. But we treat it like it is. I loved Transformers the Movie as a kid, and by today's standards that would be super edgy. That may not be the best example though, as I believe that wasn't made with kids my age in mind when it was released. Same might be said for Last Unicorn come to think of it.

But why not? I still think there are kids out there that would love that sort of thing. But we act like there aren't any. I don't think it out of line to lament that.

>>
>>89821134
To be "edgy" or -on the edge- means to step on boundaries, or that's what it would mean if it hadn't become synonymous with "tryhard" due to all the works that were mindlessly edgy in a poor attempt to be considered mature. It's not inherently bad, it's just been associated with certain bad practices.

Ironically, a very immature thing people do now is dismiss anything that looks "edgy" as immature without considering if it's truly edgy.

For what it is worth, my use of "edginess" was just another joke. You know the whole bit about, "Actually it's about ethics in game journalism?" Not actually mocking you.

As for Transformers, some people of course thing the deaths were edgy then and now. Peter Cullen has sworn he'd never do that again which is probably why on those few occasions since when an Optimus he voices dies it is reversed in the same movie or episode. Others find it as horrible today as they did then, like the unceremonious revelation about Windcharger and Wheeljack's deaths. Personally I always found it amusing just from the perspective that for two seasons their guns barely did shit against each other and we've even seen Optimus ripped apart once and rebuilt into a robot alligator among other things, then suddenly in the movie the guns actually work to clear out the old toy characters to make room for the new toy characters, and then in season 3 they all set their guns back to tickle mode.
>>
>>89821740
I feel the same way, but while I'm amused by it now I was pumped as all Hell back then. I loved the shift in tone, especially because the characters were familiar and suddenly there was a feeling of consequence, of finality that I hadn't experienced much before. I was more disappointed with Magnus getting tinker toyed back together than Optimus or Starscream dying.

But I get it. In general kids don't want to deal with that sort of thing. Most would probably feel robbed but there are those that feel enriched.

And I don't even think stuff like Land Before Time, the Last Unicorn, etc. is all *that* heavy, but I've even seen people complain that Brave Little Toaster was too mature at times for its audience. It's nuts.
>>
>>89822105
>Brave Little Toaster was too mature at times for its audience
It deals heavily with existence failure and horrifying deaths (if the characters didn't just get better every time). Then there's that literal nightmare clown. Older kids and adults can shrug it off but it's easy to see how it can be a bit traumatizing to young ones who still have trouble realizing it's just a cartoon.

Song of the Sea is more emotional and has a more tightly-knit story than Kells, but Kells is much better if you understand the mythology/spirituality of it and can read between the lines.
>>
>>89811422
You're reading Kells the wrong way and treating it like a standard fantasy movie. It isn't about the Vikings, it's about the creation of the book, which represents Christianity existing not as a sheltered and defensive community but as hope and knowledge to be spread throughout the world. When Brendan is in the forest both during the middle of the movie and in the epilogue the trees have a symbol of the Trinity etched into them.

I wrote a paper about this last semester and it got nominated for an award.

Damn I loved that movie. People cite that scene and my favorite song, Worthless, a lot when they suggest it wasn't kid friendly enough. But when I was a kid I just found the whole ride fascinating, and I don't think it would have stuck with me as much without those elements.

>>

>I don't think it would have stuck with me as much
The part with the narcisist flower too. Unless you're a kid who's really into something as obscure as flower species, you'll never get the reference.
You just think "Damn that's one lonely flower"
>>
>>89766764
Because it's a bad movie
Seriously, what the fuck was up with that ending? Some mongoloid randos show up out of nowhere, and Spot decides to go with them instead of Arlo and his family? After all the shit they went through?
>>
>>89823516
Wow, I didn't realize that flower was a Narcissus. That makes a lot of sense. Huh. Yeah, I just thought the flower was sort of an analogy for how the appliances felt abandoned by the master and were going to look for him, but since the flower was rooted in place it was doomed to remain alone. Likewise with Air Conditioner.

I learned something I didn't know before and for that I thank you

American Tail and Land Before Time are extremely disjointed towards the ends of both films.

...How would you guys feel if we had dedicated threads once a month where we all watch a standalone /co/ movie on Youtube and discuss it in one thread? Like, one month we do Adventures in Slumberland, another month Sita Sings the Blues, hell, even some semi-obscure stuff like Flatland. It would break up the monotony of shitposting and waifu threads if just for once a month.
