It's why so many European cartoons from the Cold War era are joint Franco-Japanese shows.
It's not that they are the odd ones out. It's the US and Canada who are different from the rest of the world.

Urban myth. anime comes from shortening Japanese "animation" pronunciation "a ni me shion".
People saw a lot of "animé" online in the early 00's because France was flooding the place with subs at the time, and overall had the most active communities, before the USA platforms took over.
