I like Ware's stories and his art but holy fucking shit could his pretentious artsy page layouts get any more confusing? This is fucking Diaz tier.
>>

You're mistaking pretentious with being talented & forward-thinking. Experimentation leads to new ideas. Not every page is going to be a flawless new idea, but at least he's trying. Otherwise, everything looks like what sells the best, which eventually is a creative dead end.

Another example: Chris' books rarely fit on my shelves, so I have to keep them out on display. People pick them up and read them before anything else. They are immediately drawn to unique look and layout of his books.

I wouldn't go as far as pretentious. I think they are just very tedious. I am glad I am not the only one who struggles with reading it though. Sometimes I feel like an idiot trying to read Ware's work.

I like that he refers to these images as "minute sausage slices"

Fair comment, but it still feels to me like he's making his layouts different for the sake of being different.

Standard left to right, top to bottom layouts might be the norm but they're the norm for a reason. I mean, you wouldn't write a novel where you were expected to read the paragraphs on the page in a different order to how they're presented on the page, and no-one accuses books of being uninspired and boring in their layouts.

You can panel artistically and differently while still keeping the order in which you're meant to read the panels obvious - Dave Sim for example is great at that.

I got to bubble 5 and stopped reading. That statement is fucking insane. This guy thinks he knows exactly what art is to everybody when in reality he can only say what art is to himself, thus negating the entire point of the comic.

I'm not familiar with his work but comparing that page to Diaz seems really unfair. It's a novel way of representing how we recall memories when we look at a photo of someone.

Not a great analogy, I'd suggest you read & view OP's image to get Chris' take on what makes comics different from just the written word.

However, there are tons of books that require multiple readings to fully understand. Some people put them on "greatest books ever" lists and others call them pretentious. So in that way, I guess they are the same.

And saying that something is the "norm for a reason" is another way of saying, "don't ever experiment / don't look for your own answers."

I would argue the second Chris Ware page functions more like memory. It's not necessarily in order, you may re-read certain parts, you may get lost, but the sum total of it is a feeling. Storytelling isn't just about telling something how it happened. Comics have images which means you can tell the story how it FELT.

From another medium: look at the way Terrence Malick edits his movies. He's experimented with memory and non-linearity. Some put it on year end lists, some call it pretentious. Are we better off with or without his films? What if a producer from Miramax told Tarantino that Pulp Fiction would "flow better" if it was told in a linear way? Is it worse because it's non-linear? Does something being confusing mean it's not good? If an artist is smarter or deeper or more complex than me and it comes through in their art, does that make me a lesser person? Does that mean I can't appreciate what they made? Does that mean I'll never understand it?

"I" is in the title. So, the usage of "we" within the comic is obviously subjective unto his own understanding of art.

Were you ok with the fourth panel where he described the way our vision works and said there are three types of wavelengths (red, blue, & porn)?

Why didn't you stop reading there as soon as you saw that the author was out of touch with reality?

Would the comic be better with no sub-text of any sort? Do people speak in single meanings where you live? Is there never any subtext? Do you always stop reading things you disagree with? Did you even get to that question in my post or had you already stopped reading?
