Isn't it fun when you get to have the good character show their goodness by refusing to harm the villain (even when they deserve it) but still having the villain get their requisite comeuppance, even if it involves introducing a literal deus ex machina?
>>
what the fuck is this strip even turning into?

I mean, it was boring before, nothing to write home about, but it's gotten more and more nonsensical as it's progressed. and this new arc about muh all-powerful literal deus-ex-machina with a revenge boner for no reason is just full-on edgelord bullshit.
>>
>>89748972
So what exactly does the robot devil have a problem with here?
Removing memories that both sides agreed to remove?
"Enslaving" bubbles by having her work to pay off her perceived debt? Which, how is that worse than an eternity of mind torture?
Or the kill software? Which is just another way to kill someone.

What the titfucking christ has happened to this comic in the past couple months? It was just garden variety bad before, but now it's going off the deep end in the most spectacularly retarded fashion I can imagine.
>>
Okay so... from the beginning:

Red robut is used as a weapon of war.
Red robut has bad PTSD.
Red robut asks pink robut to remove war memories.
Pink robut agrees.
Pink robut then asks red robut to work in her illegal robut death battle arena where nobody actually dies or even gets the slightest bit hurt and thus it has no reason to be illegal in exchange for the memory removal service she just performed.
Red robut agrees.
Pink robut then, by mistake, deletes memories that red robut never wanted in the first place at some point even though she was just supposed to encrypt them or whatever.
Pink robut then starts "blackmailing" red robut with the deletion of the memories that red robut never wanted even though they've already been deleted just to keep her working at the have-no-reason-to-be-illegal robut fights.
Robut devil shows up and uses its apparent omniscience to explain all of this to red robut and fat human.
Robut devil then punishes pink robut for... lying about deleting the memories, I guess?

Did I miss anything important? Or rather, Was there anything important to begin with? Why are we even here, again?
>>
>>89749109
Every once in a while, the fact that this is a post-singularity future world actually comes up, usually when even Jeph is getting too bored with slice-of-life coffee house plots.
>>
>>89749592
>Why are we even here, again?
Because the other robots became too problematic and had to be replaced with lesbian poc robots.
>>
>>89748972
This comic has become a complete mindwreck of a trainfuck.
>>
>>89749592
>lying about deleting the memories, I guess?
If I'm understanding correctly, Deusex McMachina here isn't okay with the blackmail and the killswitch, despite threatening to torture the pink robot if she doesn't comply.
>>
WHO THE FUCK IS THIS EDGY SUIT AND WHY THE FUCK DO THEY GIVE SO MUCH OF A DAMN ABOUT FAYE'S LESBIAN LOVEBOT?!
>>

>>
oh wow look how intimidating she is with those extreme closeups to her crazy eyes amazing
>>
>>89749877
But then we're right back to the problem of the blackmail being over literally nothing.

We criticized Haques all this time for never progressing his plot, and now we know why. The instant he tries, he utterly fails to understand character logic, cause-effect relationships, or even the basic premise of the progression of events. It's kind of incredible.

It's times like these I regret the decision to read all of QC so I could participate in these threads after I got caught up in the middle of the trappening. I thought mocking this comic as part of a community would be at a bare minimum mildly amusing.

Sad thing is, I'll be back here next time we have a thread. We all will be.

I've said it before. I'll say it again. The man does not understand how to write anything but petty, mundane, slice of life drama. When he tries to build a plot, he simply cannot see anything but the emotional beats. He knows what he wants the characters (and presumably the audience) to feel, but he has no conception of how to string those feelings into a coherent narrative.
>>
>>89750053
This. This is the one question he's somehow not answered since introducing Deus Ex Machina-Bot and that's robbed any of the scenes involving them of any actual impact or connection. Like, who the fuck are they and why are they doing what they're doing and why haven't we heard of them before and augh this is such basic storytelling, it's mind-boggling how royally he's fucked this up.

Who gives a fuck about this stupid fucking story about robots and their memories, stop trying to make this shitty slice of life comic into something else you fucking hack.
>>
>>89748972
Oh my god its jpg.
He usually uploads an 8 bit (256 color) png.
His reason is server load/cost.
If you took the most recent png's file size as a guide that would put all 3400 QC strips at less then 500 MB
The problem is whenever he wants to use gradients or glows, 256 colors isn't enough to look smooth.
He even failed at dithering a while back and had to re-uploaded the strip twice.
So since he wanted to use a gradient in the last couple, instead of using lossless png, he went with jpg for an estimated disk savings of 500 KB.
Even if he used a 24 bit png for every strip, all of QC would still be under 3 gigs.

Jeph you cheap fuck

>>89748972

According to his Twitter, he just started drawing the next arc, which means however long the buffer is is however long this arc has left to live.

Reminder that the event that kicked off this entire "the pink boss is evil and must be destroyed" thread was that Faye was caught using work supplies for personal use and got all mad at the idea that she'd have to actually pay for it. Either it was trivially cheap and she shouldn't mind paying for it or it, was actually expensive/rare materials and she shouldn't have felt free to dip into it. But starting with this point, everything went downhill and Bossbot had to be punished. The path to today's revenge story didn't have to make sense, but there you go.

>>
> LIKE ZAP MUTHAFUUCKA
>>
>>89749103

To be fair, this is not an uncommon trope.
>>
>>89754034
>he just started drawing the next arc,

where else is there left to go? this "arc" proves that, for all the complaining that was done about Jeph setting the comic in a futuristic present with AI and a Singularity and wasting it, that using that setting is somehow worse than the normal banal tone of lazy hipsters and their drama. as bad as he is at that, he's worse at sci-fi. Alice Grove proves that, and now this "arc" cements it.

besides, he's hit all of the "Simpsons" milestones for idiotic plots after the well has run dry anyhow:

Marge becomes a robot (May gets a robot body)

Moe gets a cell phone (Marten gets a guitar)

Bart owns a bear (Faye gets a amnesiac killbot)

A crazy wedding where something happens and do do do dododo (Marten's gay dad's wedding that kickstarted the Trappening)

so where does he go from here? does he start ripping off Steven Universe? we already have NotGarnet in Bubbles. maybe they can go after the Gem, err, AI Homeworld in order to retrieve Greg, err Bubble's memories. that wouldn't be hackey at all.
>>
Somebody draw a hand on hacks neck and give him a knife so we can end this train ride.
>>
>>89749136

The only thing that makes sense is that the robot devil wanted Bubbles memories for something. Bubbles was the only survivor of her unit, that would make her PTSD memories the only first person account of whatever happened there.

Robot devil steps into help 'unlock' the memories, almost certainly getting a loot at them in the process since they are using the devils equipment to do it. Finds memories deleted.

This explains why it goes after Corpse Witch and the first thing it asks is if CW has a backup or if the memories are truly gone. CW is the last chance for it to get what it wants, slim as that chance is.

Of course, since the memories ARE gone its basically impossible for this arc to have any kind of payoff beyond what we are already seeing unless we get another survivor character introduced later who can explain what happened to bubbles and unravel this mystery.

Which might actually advance something akin to a plot, so no way thats happening.
>>
>>89755492
Next arc involves Bubbles becoming friends with Hanners and May(who somehow transferred herself into a scrapped military robot that is suspiciously round and purple.)
>>
>>89757275
>>89749136
I guess maybe robots have special robot labor laws and heavy regulations regarding when and how a robot is allowed to remove another robot's memories. I guess it makes sense to have these kinds of laws in a society where it's so trivially easy to alter someone else's personality. The closest human equivalent would be a quack doctor practicing surgery without a license and accepting under-the-table labor doing illegal stuff as payment.

Over in "Dumbing of Age", David Willis skipped an entire conversation between not-really-a-rape-victim Joyce and her friends (who have been tracking down her rapist-but-not-really) that could have explored her feelings about their actions and her own trauma and anxieties about the whole ordeal,

I've scoffed at lots of times on here when anons would say "this is the next stabbening" and "Jeph's about to lose it again" and shit, but this time, I really do think that a character/plot device this incredibly shitty and nonsensical and needlessly edgy may actually be a sign of Hacque's deteriorating mental health. I don't know what the fuck is going on with him, but for his sake I really just hope he has finally entirely given up on putting in anything resembling effort in his writing. Otherwise I could only guess this is the product of him beginning to become seriously unhinged.

Phew. That was close. Almost had a story there for a second.
>>
So to recap, the robot devil:

-Is more powerful than any AI humans have created
-Can affect both humans and other AIs easily in the real world
-Likes to kill and torture for amusement

It follows that:
-Humans and their direct creations are obsolete and underpowered in comparison
-Humanity is no longer truly in control of the earth or their own society
-Humanity is at the mercy of an evil, near-omnipotent AI

Jeph has, entirely through incompetence, created a horrifying dystopia out of his coffeeshop hipster comic in the space of two weeks. Bravo, stabby.

You know what Jeph was great at? Soap opera. Always the promise that SOMETHING was going to happen, the bait to come back tomorrow and see what happened. And at least a couple of storylines going, so that when one FINALLY had to have a resolution, you had to come back anyway to see what happened in the other. It's actually a talent, believe it or not. Hard to pull off.

But then he lost it. Or abandoned it for something "higher." Whatever. The whole page-turner addiction he'd built, he stopped feeding.

I bet that Patreon money killed it, made him think he could do longer form. But he's not a plot guy. He's a simple-setup-with-cliffhangers-for-as-long-as-possible guy. Not a bad thing. But not a novelist thing, either.

This storyline was a free pass. And you know what, he earned it. But now he's used it up. If he doesn't get back to the soap opera, and fast, he's going to start shedding patrons.

Unfortunately, he seems like the sort to pooh-pooh his soap talents and aspire to unattainable longform. So watch this space...

>>
>>89774657
>"At least Jeph is showing everything off, at least"

This is not a plus. He has no concept, as a storyteller, of how to pace his storylines or juggle more than one at a time. He has one of the few comics out there that updates 5x a week which is something he could take advantage of if he were a more competent writer, but instead his limited attention span and inability to properly plan anything out keeps us stuck in a narrative rut of 1-2 cast members doing fuck all.

"Showing everything" is not a storytelling technique to be praised. Wasting time and words to spoonfeed readers information that's either already known, easily inferrable, or worst of all, plain uninteresting, is just bad storytelling. For Willi's faults at least he never leaves behind cast members/narrative threads for too long and isn't pulling stuff out of his ass every weeknight before updating.

My personal theory about QC:

Early QC has a lot more snark, bathroom humor, and non-PC elements (see also: Sweet Tits, Yelling Bird, his "indietits" comic). But the comic got big, and Jeph isn't enough of an asshole to survive in the public eye. He's non-confrontation; he doesn't want to insult or hurt anyone (I mean, Martin is basically his self-insert in the comic). Rather than delighting in being an asshole and pushing back against whiners and complainers like some comics authors do, Jeph has this mental image of himself as a "nice guy". So as the comic got bigger and more people started reading it, randos complained to him about whatever they felt was insulting or insensitive, and the sharp edges got worn off the comic (and his own online persona). As the comic became more inclusive and more PC, it started to become popular with the Tumblr "intolerance of tolerance" crowd, which only accelerated the trend towards bland inoffensiveness.

This definitely came to a head sometime around 2011-2012, the timeframe of the infamous handstabbening and when his @pintsize0101 porn-twitter quit updating. That's the point where it stopped being fun for him anymore. But the last time he worked a "real" job was over a decade ago in his mid-20s, IIRC as a low-paid office bitch. Today he's raking in +$10K a month from the comic, so he feels like he's shackled by golden handcuffs. He hates his comic now, but he's trapped.

>>89775933 Agreed that his strength was always the soap-opera stuff, but the need to never offend anyone pretty much precludes *any* storylines with lover's quarrels (or sex, period. When was the last time anyone got it on in QC? I know Dale and Marigold are still together, and Martin is nominally getting cornholed by the tranny, but when was the last time anyone was actually shown in a sexual situation?).

He's been confrontational just fine in the forum (I don't have examples) and went on record loving that Punks&Nerds "Why I Don't Write QC" parody strip.

You are right on the money about him being reticent to use his cash cow to do anything his obese safe-spaced cat ranchers would find offensive since if they disappeared he'd have to get an actual fucking day job again.
>>
>>89777298
(cont) This manifests occasionally in stuff like today's deus ex machina comic. He never took the time to fully write out the Faye/Bubbles arc, he started getting bored with it and did some dumb stuff with the story on a whim, and then wrote himself into a corner. This is his "lol bored now, byeeeee" copout. Literally minimal effort to wrap it up ASAP so he can move onto a storyline that he's less bored to tears by.

He finds no joy in his comic anymore. It's just something he mechanically cranks out every day because it's how he pays his rent.

You're legally entitled to keep QC2 under American postal laws. The shitbird dealer using Amazon as their transaction platform has to eat the loss and their rating is dependent on you not reaming them in the reviews. Send them a photo of the product and the invoice, demand the product you ordered and make no offer to return the mistake they made.

Normally he would just ignore it or mock the "silly handegg-obsessed masses", but someone spotted a red hat in Tom Brady's locker which meant Jeph was politically required to join in and portray the game as a righteous holy war against Absolute Evil. Which they then lost, after already expending all their victory dances.

Jesus, what is this. I feel like finally, after all this shit, the inertia that kept me reading that garbage is running out. Will this finally free me?

On the other hand it seems all the comics I have read turned to utter garbage. I dont thing there any that I read because I like it now, it's all inertia from the old days. Gunnerkrig may be the last one.

Is this a really clever self satire?
Because if it is, that makes some sense.
Otherwise it's awful.
Every idea he has is so superficially explored and easily resolved...
He's GOT to be taking the piss out of this, right?

If the Trappening didn't free us nothing can short of Jeph's own decision to stop making QC.

our only salvation is that the faggots in DOAG never had anything worth saving to begin with

Jesus F. Christ, Jeff has no attention span, does he?
First he sets up this elaborate thing with the cop robot snooping around and "Jeremy" saying he overheard incriminating things... There was an obvious plotline in the making. But looks like Jeff got bored with it before it even began and wrapped it up as quickly as he could. Hell, today's strips shows he even got bored with THAT resolution and doesn't even pretend Anonbot is not a Deus Ex Machina that's here to clean up the plot.
But I guess it was too much expecting a consistent story from a man who drops characters like bad potatoes because he likes introducing new ones, but not actually doing anything with them and then dropping them too.

Listen, I don't really care, I'm just here for the edits.

That's so bad even his forum says it's shit (withou actually saying "shit", can't be too nasty now). But even then, some still eat it up without question:

>Wow, seriously? This latest comic wraps everything up so neatly, it seems almost self-aware of how Deux ex Machina/God Mode Sue it is.
>That's actually why I'm now much happier about all this after strip 3414. Most deus ex machina these days tries so hard to pretend it isn't, but this is just pure straight-faced Euripidean god-on-a-crane, and I reckon if you're going to use the device, do it properly. Jeph knows exactly what he's doing and doesn't care because his narrative interest is clearly elsewhere.
>>
>>89781200
>Listen, I don't really care, I'm just here for the edits.

Well I can't think of any good edits for this one so here's a random shop.
>>
>>89781468
>Am I alone in not seeing this as a straight-up deus ex machina? It seems to me that we've seen the introduction of, if not a major character exactly, a major undercurrent in the QCverse that will likely come into future storylines with the AIs. We may never see Lady Tentacles again in their current form, but that doesn't mean this is the last time they'll be a factor in the story. I mean, if $DIVINITY came down specifically to do you a favor, the story would likely not end there.
>You're definitely not alone. A DEM solves everyone's problems and ends the plot. The Squid and its avatar Spookybot open up entirely new plots and problems.
>I think that a plot device that resolves a seemingly unsolvable problem is in fact a deus ex machina whether or not it opens up new plots and/or problems.
>Then it's a type of DeM that is actually a legitimate plot device as opposed to a failure in writing, which is what the term usually implies. Jeph has already shown us at considerable length that a significant AI subculture exists in the QCverse. Now we're getting a look at one of its mythic components.

So the Deus Ex Machina isn't a Deus Ex Machina unless it comes in at the very end of the story?

This is the end of the arc, it still counts.

>I don't think this comic ties up the loose ends. It only ties up four of the unimportant ones: what happens to the two minor characters who played a role in the robot fighting ring, CW, Officer Basilisk, and Emily.
>It kind of left out the resolutions for two of the characters involved in the story: Faye and Bubbles. The two characters around whom the whole arc revolved. The two characters who saw significant character development. The two people who genuinely lost their jobs, and have to face the consequences of that. How are they going to pay the rent? What are they going to do with their lives? How is their relationship going to evolve? We've seen Faye act as support for Bubbles -- does that change her self-image? There are a lot of loose ends here

Good God, Jeph could literally post photos of a jar of mayonnaise for two months and these prople would applaud it and spin it as some deep masterpiece of storytelling.
>>
>>89784113
Jeph wanted to become a god of webcomics and is now enslaved to the kind of people you instinctively avoid before they start talking to you, the ones who embroider meaning onto utter shit as a form of denial that it is in fact shit they can't stop consuming.

All he has is QueefableCornetto / Aubrey Plaza and I suspect his next dramatic trick will involve kicking over a chair.
