So, I've been having this feeling lately and I'd like to know if I'm the only one.
I don't sense Marco and Star's connection as strong as it used to be, and I don't know if it's intentional. Back in season 1 the episodes were about the two of them on an adventure for the most part. Now, I feel that even if both of them are in an episode only one of them is actually doing something while the other one orbits around them; they don't feel part of the story as much as they used to.
Is anyone else getting this?

Also on a sidenote, it's kinda hard to pick up where the Bon Bon episode left off, it was a superb episode after all. I'm really excited for the later episodes though. I have a good feeling for the following two episodes, with the fairy godmother cat thing and Hekapoo.

honestly i've never understood this

i think the writing is poor, character designs are uninspired and the jokes are lame (not to mention the musical interludes)

In the last thread Trickstar seemed kind of disliked but as far as "filler episodes that will probably never be referenced again or influence anything in any capacity" go, this one might be my favorite so far. Pretty funny; I actually liked everyone shitting on Star at the end despite her being right and even having their best interests in mind. Like Other Exchange Student in reverse, but handled a bit better for this show.

I really hate the "Subverting tropes for the sake of it" bullshit.

Certain tropes can be done well. And right now, as it is, the romantic tension between Star and Marco (less on his side of course) isn't being handled poorly. I really like how well written and natural feeling their friendship is. It flows better than some people's real life RELATIONSHIPS.

In this case I liked that it wasn't "wow look how wacky this one-time character is, they're homeless and probably crazy, isn't that nutty," it was literally an entity from another dimension. Felt sort of season-1ish in that sense.

If anything Star was the "crazy" one here since everyone else was oblivious and the magician was acting like a typical magician, minus the whole joy-sucking thing that only Star knew of.

I'm not sure what the issues you feel the other ones had were; I agree they had issues but to me it was mainly that they weren't funny. This one at least had consistent humor and used Marco's sensei in a more interesting way than Red Belt.

The big issues really boil down to the lack of any meaningful resolution to what could be considered the episodes conflict.

Star realized this guy is a magical entity who is doing something a bit dubious, she gives him a chance to leave with no fuss, he doesn't do so and she confronts him for not doing so and is then chastised and the episode just sort of ends. It was like an episode was 3/4 written and then just got the go ahead to be made that way.

It still had jokes, a few of which were rather enjoyable. The Jeremy scenes surprisingly, the guy crying at the end, Marco's rather dark comment. All those little moments made it more enjoyable in my mind than other poor season 2 episodes such as Fetch and Star vs. Echo Creek.

I actually found the ending pretty satisfying; Star getting chewed out for doing the right thing in the long run, or maybe going about doing the "right" thing in the wrong way for the situation (depending on how you see it). While it's obviously filler you could maybe stretch that to how Star will probably have to defy her parents/Mewni/etc. in the future but still stand by that decision and its consequences.

Or maybe I just enjoy occasional episodes where a main character "loses" for comedy in typically positive series, but either way it worked for me than those other episodes. I can't think of what else she could have done to make it more agreeable. However if the message is intended to be that it's sometimes acceptable to let people engage with something that isn't entirely healthy, the episode did a poor job displaying that, particularly with that ending.

Perhaps I'm just missing something, I don't know, it just felt off to me. Either way, an easy episode to forget given another episode is coming tomorrow.

But Star in the end did exactly what she was trying to protect them from - she stole their joy. The show even spelled it out; "you stole my joy FOREVER, by making him explain how his tricks are done".

The morale imo is that even when you think you're doing good, if you go about it the wrong way or don't explain yourself clearly or listen to advice or whatever, you can end up causing just as much, or more, harm than what you thought you were preventing.
