I think this may have actually been one of the stories behind Huey, Louie and Dewey's mother. Except they said she just disappeared in space.

While it's basically verboten to bring up "that horse show", I wanna reference something from it.

One of the mane 6 characters lives with her two siblings and their grandmother. The creators of the show have expressly said that that's that; they wanted the family to be made up of just them, but since it's a kids show, they cannot actually state that their parents are actually dead, or (and I'm paraphrasing now) in jail or whatever the hell, so it's just a question that won't have an answer in the show itself. They put in one easter egg that implies their parents are dead, a very subtle one, and that's that.

I'm assuming that this is the same situation with Goofy. The writers of Goof Troop and both movies wanted the family dynamic to be a single father and his son who are alienated from each other in their own awkwardness and the story goes from there. For whatever reason, the mom doesn't exist nor will be brought up in universe to her whereabouts or status.

If you absolutely have to have a reason, just assume she died in childbirth, because with the way Disney works its self image (at the time,) a dead mom is better than a divorced one and so she's not somewhere else enjoying a goof-less life.

I recall there was a scene cut from the movie, where Goofy's crying in a dimly lit room and holding a picture frame of he and his wife on the campgrounds of some college. She looked like some slutty biker chick and Goofy said under his breath "I wish I could've changed you" or something along those lines. There was also planned a very emotional fight between Max and his father over the death of mom, which implies she died of a drug overdose. Not sure in what order these would've taken place in, but it really seemed like they wanted to reveal a deeper meaning as to why Goofy and his son didn't get along.
