Who are some characters that were hugely popular but have sunk into obscurity? Gambit is the first one that comes to mind for me, as someone who grew up in the 90s
>>
Gambit's still clinging to relevance, if only barely. I say give him until 2020 before giving up on him. If the movie happens or he's a main character in a book that doesn't fail by then he's still fairly popular.
>>
Has plastic man ever been really popular or just go from underground superhero to nonexistent?
>>
>>89698720
Gambit's still far and away one of the most popular X-Men characters. Most people (i.e. normies) remember the cartoon and games and barely touched the comics. He's a character who's really only hated by comic types (fans ans creators) because of the whole "everything popular in the '90s was shit" mentality.
>>
>>89699436
Gambit sucks because he hasn't had a good story in the past 20 years.
>>
>>89699461

>>89699436
By people who were alive when he was relevant sure, but talk to some 17 year old who got into capeshit as kids via the MCU...I know someone like this and they didn't even know who Gambit was

Ghost Rider was huge back in the late 70s and early 80s, then his popularity suddenly dropped for some reason. In the 90s collector craze weirdly enough 70s comics had pretty steady value and even today Marvel Spotligh #5 and #6 sell like for hundreds of dollars. Marvel smelled money and he got another ongoing running for 9 years or so, but since then he is nothing but a glorified C-lister regardless which legacy incarnation we are talking about after 1998, including Robbie Reyez who if not were for Tradd Moore's art would be completely forgotten by this point.
>>
>>89701225
Johnny needs to make a comeback. Jason Aaron's run was fucking excellent, but that was almost 10 years ago. Robbie's been shafted too hard for me to like him as much. (Seriously, it's called Ghost Rider. Hulk and X-23 should not be the main characters.)
>>
>>89698720
is he still a vampire or hanging out with vampires or whatever?

yep
>>
Well Swamp Thing pretty much fell into obscurity right after Alan Moore finished his run.
>>
>>89699379
After the Golden Age he's just something people keep trying to make happen
>>
>>89700472
18 y/o here, he was in Wolverine Origins, every sickcunt back in primary school loved Wolverine so most people I knew know of him

More popular than goddamn Superman, and now...

Fuck I love Captain Marvel, he's such a great character.

Man-Thing was popular back in the early days, but I don't think there are any non-comic fans that know he exists.
>>
>>89702311
This. Although, I always preferred Superman as a kid, I still think that Billy is a relatable and fun character.
>>
>>89702346
Does it even matter if a character is popular among non-comic fans? I think it's pretty obvious by now that movie/tv popularity barely translates to actual sales that would have any impact on editorial decisions who to push and who to scrap.
>>
>>89699461

Gambit shouldn't be a solo character nor should they try to push him as such. The several failed solo books really highlight that. He works as a rogue-ish team member.
>>
>>89701225

90s GR is also notorious for having shit sales for most of its run, but Marvel kept publishing it regardless of the fact since there were talks about an animated series and they needed to keep him prevalent.

Ghost rider needs high concept horror ongoing written by Mignola

Captain Marvel could have been DC's Spider-man if they actually gave him proper spotlight

This was such a fun little story. We need more shit like this.
>>
>>89702504
DC's Spider-man? I assume you mean in terms of the wisecracking teen personality, moreso than the "most iconic character" role, since Batman and Superman simply cannot be surpassed in DC properties, The lawsuit and burial of Captain Marvel meant he never stood a chance.
>>
>>89702487
I doubt Mignola would ever work for Marvel for an extended amount of time.
>>
>>89702311
I never liked the Billy Batson aspect of Shazam. An orphan running around hosting a fucking radio show and always being late for class? At least in Power of Shazam. But in some of the older stuff I've read, this is also the same, and it's just a fucking drag.

New52 Captain Marvel is best Captain Marvel. Fite me
>>
>>89702665
I always enjoyed Billy's innocence and his childish enduring belief in the good within people. It was his character and personality that I enjoyed, the stuff about being a radio show host who juggles school and superheroics was all just window-dressing that never enhanced or detracted from the character, imo.

Agreed. But the rest imo, was a real drag.

Btw, Captain Marvel has my favourite costume of all time. Its aesthetics are just so damn fine.
>>
>>89702311
He's not forgotten, DC just won't just give him a fucking solo. They gave Klarion the fucking Witchboy a shot, why haven't the done so for Billy?
>>
>>89702665
Power of Shazam wasn't that great a run but I've always enjoyed his radio gig in both the classic era and Thunderworld.
Always seemed like a real fun job for a kid to have as a kid.
>>
>>89702809
Was his belief really childish?
Black Adam did turn out to be a hero for quite a while, and it's not like he thought that people like Captain Nazi had good in them.
>>
>>89698720

I think Hollywood doesn't like the idea of portraying white people from the deep south as good people/super heroes.
>>
>>89703372
It's the cape.

His cape is mad stylin'.
>>
>>89699379
Plastic Man is decently popular among comic book readers, I think it's just normies who don't know/care about him.
>>
>>89704610
True, but also, dat sash and the red and gold.
>>
>>89699461
Nightcrawler's never had a good story. Doesn't make him a bad character. Gambit's personality is fine which is what makes him a good solo character or supporting team member. He's not an insufferable or useless cunt like Psylocke, Angel or Colossus.
>>
>>89699461
i liked the blood of apocalypse line where he became one of his horsemen
>>
>>89699257
He doesn't work as a main character, he should be part of a team with motives that are unclear to the reader. That's what makes him work
>>
Gambit hasnt been the same since his Trial
>>
>>89698720
Gambit was my favorite x-men and I am disappointed he never appears in anything anymore. I thought his exploding cards were the coolest shit ever when I was young.
>>
>>89707329
Ya, it was actually the game that did it for me. I had no idea who this guy was but after seeing him fight then playing as him. I looked up the x-men show and became a fan

Brothers
Cyclops was cool in the games too, but holy hell what a ride.
>>
>>89707882
>>89708024
for me, my introduction to him was some hybrid comic book that also had sound effects if you pressed buttons or something. I remember it took place in the savage lands with all the dinos. I just remember thinking "this dude can make stuff explode by touching it. That's the coolest power ever!"
>>
>>89702630
Didn't he work as an artist there when he was barely starting out?
>>
>>89708070
And it wasn't just the powers, he fights with a staff and rocks a coat that could have only been done in the 90's. I prefer his wardrobe in comparison to the skin tight suits or the modern 'not-costumes' that are all over the comic scene.
>>
>>89698720
I still want that New Orleans-set mini about Gambit and Monica. It'd be great.
>>
>>89709140
I liked his southern gentleman charm and bayou accent. His costume, powers, and personality just checked all the boxes for me.

Plastic Man in Morrisons JLA during the 90's was amazing and just what the team dynamic needed.
Nobody has ever really reclaimed that since, although BatB got the highlights.
