I'm thinking colors aren't some hard rule like "Blue gets all the blues", its just preference for gems similar to themselves. We know color affects their nature, blues are diplomatic, greens are action oriented, reds are probably anger prone, and so on.

Yellow was annoyed by Holly Blue's excessive asskissing, while Blue seems to like that ceremonial feudal stuff. So maybe when they have gems that can come in multiple colors like Sapphires, Quartz, or Agates (or planets that they can tell will overwhelmingly produce certain colors), they'll trade the fuckers around like pokemon cards.

But then you have some roles filled by gems that only come in one color. Bismuth, Lapis, Ruby, Peridot, Nephrites... these probably aren't monopolized because each diamond seems to run their own shit, and they wouldn't be able to do that if they had to constantly borrow each others gems for basic tasks.

To elaborate on my original point; Lapis at first was this mysterious powerful character that just wanted freedom. Then she had potential for a deep storyline about Jasper and honestly we sort of got that with Alone at Sea. She was exactly how she should be in that. I feel that episode was written or conceptualised BEFORE Barn Mates.

In Barn Mates/Hit the Diamond they (or Zuke) just turned her into exactly what Tumblr wanted; sarcastic, sad, 2010s "i want to die lol" emo teen girl. And she's been that way since (except Alone at Sea)
