It's not understanding.

I feel that Japanese fandoms operate on a level of sincerity that few can hope to match. They enjoy the silly and the pompous without irony. They aren't insecure because all of their shame is expended during the normal dealings of reality, such that they are shameless when it comes to entertainment (which may be why they produce so much porn, too.)

They play their campy things straight. They readily accept the conceits of their chosen obsessions. It's the very opposite of Zack Snyder thinking that two guys can't have discussion in spandex.

I can't agree with this innocence completely, but I admire and envy it.
