Having been into the show back in the day I can tell you how pissed Jhonen was that the general audience for Zim loved GIR and didn't like Dib (Dib being his favorite character). He would talked in the DVD commentary tracks about wanting to see GIR dead and drew him dead in a Fillerbunny comic, he also comments that GIR is now a washed up crack whore or something sometimes.

The funny thing is the "Invader Zim fandom" didn't care about GIRL because you couldn't easily make GIR shipping fanfic and porn. The "fandom" was all ZimxDib slash sometimes with things like ZimXGaz and DibxTak, so it was the opposite of the general audience that only cared about GIR.

I find a lot of kids who have and wear GIR merchandise today don't know who he is, they think he's just a clothing label mascot like Hello Kitty that appears on clothes and don't know he was once on a show.

GIR is just a funny robot, he's totally innocuous in the show itself. But a loads of kids sperged out hard about the character. That's all there is to it.

What was the latest comic about? I haven't watched this series nor do I plan to since I was like age 5, 15 years ago, but I've seen comic panels of it before and I think it's kind of interesting

The comic is pretty much the same as the show. Mostly stand alone, episodic stories with some light sprinkling of lore and continuity here and there. The latest issue is written and drawn by the lead character designer of the show and is about Zim trying to scare Dib back after he frightens Zim with a clown mask. The issue has plenty of interaction between Zim and Gaz, which is great. (pic related)

Gaz looks perfectly thicc here.

It's too bad Gir's "random" jokes became such a big deal, because Gir actually had some great character traits, but the "tacos/cheese/whatever" jokes are all most people remember.

I loved the early gags about Gir going out & making friends in town. It felt like he understood Earth culture a lot better than Zim did, and that idea could've gone to some interesting places. I also liked the moments where Gir acted like a little kid and seemed to actually care about Zim (like that scene at the end of "Future Dib" when he puts a hand on Zim's shoulder & consoles him).

But that stuff really got overshadowed by the random jokes. Even in the comics, it feels like the show's creators have forgotten about the actually-interesting sides of Gir's character, and they only remember him as "the wacky guy who does crazy stuff."
