Tom Fulp took too long to adapt Newgrounds in time for it to successfully compete with YouTube
YouTube, at the time, made it possible for independent animators to live off their animations through monetization where Newgrounds didn't, so animators had few reasons to stay on NG anymore and even then they'd still link their YouTube videos whenever they uploaded to Newgrounds, effectively making Newgrounds a backup site to gain a bigger fanbase

Now Tom Fulp has to beg for donations to keep the site running and if you take off ad block you'll notice that Newgrounds has the same ads you'd find on 4chan

Newgrounds used to be "The Site" to go too but now when you mention it most people just go "that's still around?!"
Newgrounds is no longer relevant, fell from grace and can't sustain off donations for too much longer

Maybe it's better that way. I would rather it kept its old ways rather than become like modern Youtube. When Newgrounds dies off, at least it will be fondly remembered.

It's not like he has to really change that much

I think all he really needed to do was set monetization and then Newgrounds would be set.

I mean, there's a bigger reason why people left for YouTube besides "new website new horizon"

Yeah, toonboom seems like a more solid version of Flash but instead of it's purpose being for online interactive advertisement banners, you actually have tools useful for animation of all styles.

To be fair, Princess and the Frog was hand drawn on paper and scanned because the animators hating working on the Wacom tablets so much. So Toonboom acted as a fancy compiling program.

well more specifically higher bandwidth and processing power.
NG was over invested in a technology that existed to cover a technical limitation.
today if you want to make an animation, you generate a video with a wide choice of tools, if you want to make a browser game you can make it with much more flexible and stable engines.

tl;dr:
it was a child of a time and place, that time is over.

came here to post this.
all the good talent went away to jewtube.
which doubly hurt as google has a vandetta against them and banned them from googles ad service as well as toying with search results to put newgrounds behind.
soundcloud and the like took many of the best musicians away as well.
a few diehard fans stuck with it like harry partridge and sexual lobster.
they've recently had a surge of talent however, likely due to a successful donation/vip setup and adding cash prizes.
It's actually getting better unlike this place.

You know what sucks the most about the wild west days of the 90s/early 2000s internet? The fact it will be completely forgotten. Its pop culture on top of pop culture and all the fond memories over the years can't be enjoyed by anyone in the future. All those sites are dead and what made them special isn't around anymore. Its not like some cartoon from the 1930s that was recorded to be replayed at a future point in time, it was an experience that when described sounds awful

"I waited 30 minutes to watch some 144p video for 30s seconds" Wow that sounds terrible, but at the time it was amazing. Its like riding your bike in a windy hailstorm to get to the store to buy some shitty candy with whatever pocket change you could scrounge up. Telling people it was an amazing experience you'll remember forever won't make any sense to them. Anyone can buy much better candy and being out in a hailstorm sucks.

Now the things kids these days enjoy will be hot garbage in a few months, they don't have to wait a decade like we did.
