25 years ago a bunch of Marvel artists left the Big Two and decided to form their company, with blackjack and hookers. This company would eventually become the closest to a third competitor for DC and Marvel (lol) and the best known creator-owned comic book company out there.
This week and maybe the next one I'll be posting some of Image's first series and maybe some of their recent hits as well.
So strap in, 'cause you're in for a trip down memory lane.
Next up is what happens when you give free reign to one of the X-Men visionarios, Marc Silvestri's Cyberforce

I don't think this ever had an animated series, so...
Yo, anybody reading?
>>89629123
I think of ALL the Image Teams, Cyberforce is the least subtle knock off of the X-Men.
One or two of the characters are OCs (Velocity, maybe Ripclaw, possibly Ballistic), but everyone else is a Reskinned X-Character.
>>89629668
Yeah, it's pretty bad. I can't believe this is what Silvestri wanted to do on his own, reminds me of Byrne's Next Men.
Also, Ripclaw is totally not-Wolverine, c'mon.
>>89629522
I am here for Best Girl, and pointing out obvious X-Reskins.
>>89629727
The thing is, I waifufag Velocity so hard I really don't much care. Which is lame as hell I know, but I don't give a damn. Most of what I've read is from her PoV anyway.
>>89629756
Cool, cool.
>>89629755
Yeah but he has a completely different look and attitude than Wolverine. He's cool headed and a bit stereo-typically mystical. Which is kind of fucked, but it's enough to keep him from being an obvious reskin like say Cyblade.
>>89629820
We've all been there.
>>89629871
Cyblade is the worst haha, I'm pretty sure Silvestri waifu'd Psylocke so bad he wanted one of his own.
>>89629668
I was reading when this came out. Ripclaw is easily the necessary Wolverine analog that needed to be included in every team book since he was huge at the time. We're talking Cougar (Youngblood), Warblade (WildCATS), etc.
>>89629921
Yeah you need one small rippy guy, and you needed on big bruiser guy.
I'll be straight though, I get more of an Avengers vibe from Youngblood.
>>89630020
They were actually based on a rejected Teen Titans pitch by Liefeld, according to him.
>>89630107
So, is this supposed to be in the same Universe as Savage Dragon?
>>89630149
Back in the early days of Image the founders sorta tried to push for a shared Image universe, but it never went anywhere.
>>89630164
I get the feeling Silvestri had a bit too much fun writing Splitzkrieg.
How'd a conjoined twin have two different accents anyway?
>>89630193
Yeah, kind of sad, but the teams have too similar premises (and team lineups!) to really bounce off eachother crossover wise.
>>89630284
>Westchester
Swear to god, just once I'd like a Superhero comic to take place in St. Louis, Milwaukee or somewhere that's not jizzguzzling New fucking York.
>>89630360
B-but anonmuh X-Men
>>89630435
This is not just an X-Men Gripe (even if it taking in the part of New york as the X-Men is fucking dicks), NYC is overplayed. Superheroes were invented in a great big, wide fucking continent with dozens of large scale cities on it, but it always comes back to the city of people who've had their manners surgically removed.
>>89630513
To be fair, it's mostly a Marvel meme.
>>89630482
Velocity realizes she's just been kidnapped from her kidnappers.
>>89630830
Credit where it's due, I dont think I've seen a superteam Dustup (..which could be an okay name for an Early Image character) feature two belligerents of it apologizing to each other for the mix up.
>>89630953
Mother May I, with the superpower to make you think she's your mother.
So is her weakness Orphans and kids who hated their mum?
>>89631024
>Giant guy with a Deerlike head
>Warbuk
>>89629938
Ocelot?!
Yes, it is blatantly cyberpunk X-Men, but Cyberforce is still my favorite of Image's initial output for exactly that reason.
>>89633749
I mean, it's not necessarily a bad premise, but I don't think Silvestri does anything very interesting with it
I'd give it to a transhumanist fag like Ellis, see what he can do
That's all for Cyberforce, more early Image tomorrow

>>89630020
Sort of. There's two teams in Youngblood #1, the Home Team and the Away Team.
The Home Team (Shaft, Vogue, Chapel, Badrock, etc) was a Team Titans pitch, I think Shaft was originally supposed to be Speedy, Vogue was gonna be Harlequin (not Harley, but one of the previous villainesses). and I don't know who the rest were.
The Away Team (Sentinel, Psifire, etc) though, they were made up of characters that Liefeld previously created before working at Marvel or DC. If you look in the Youngblood hardcover that had the Joe Casey re-dialogue, it included one of those really early comics. the Away Team was a lot more like the Legion of Superheroes (a title Liefeld also enjoyed back then).
>>89630149
It was. IIRC when Steve Gerber wrote for Codename Stryke Force (which was Stryker from Cyberforce leading a second team) he introduced a sort of foe that would turn out to be an enslaved Destroyer Duck inside of it. This wouldn't get resolved till Savage Dragon/Destroyer Duck (which also had an indirect crossover with an issue of Marvel Team-Up).
>>89633789
Oh, basically every other writer to tackle Cyberforce has done it better than Silvestri. The man was a second stringer even among the Image boys. I say this as someone who generally approves of Top Cow's existence, but Silvestri is probably the most superfluous comic book pro in history. There's always a better option available.
>>89633973
Isn't Destroyer Duck the original Howard the Duck while Marvel was left with a clone?
>>89634202
No, he took the original Howard and Bev with him in the crossover and Dragon put Howard and Bev in the witness relocation program.
>>89629727
Next Men isn't anything like X-Men though.
Haters gonna hate. This comic was pure fun with awesome character designs, clear and appealing stories without much edge, and Silvestri's art was incredible.
Stormwatch and Gen13 are the only Image team books that are better.
