How do you feel about anime references in cartoons?
>>
I stopped feeling awhile back.
>>
>>89617322
You should probably see a doctor about that.
>>
>>89617277
They tend not to be very smart or very subtle.

But then again, nothing about that particular show is.
>>
>>89617277
I don't watch anime to even understand this reference OP.
>>
>>89617277
I like references more than the average guy but OP's pic is fucking stupid. It shouldn't get to such a ridiculous level unless it is specifically a spoof/parody comedy show(which I don't think SU is )
>>
>>89617387
It's from that one popular anime that's obscure enough so anime fans can pat themselves on the back for recognizing "homages" to it

>>

>doesn't like anime enough to see entry-tier anime
>is on a anime imageboard
Fuck off newfag.
>>
>>89617277
When they're done well I like them.
>>
Most kids aren't gonna know or care about the more obscure. Steven Universe is fine with doing stuff like Eva or Junji Ito references.
>>
>>89617277
Every new animator that comes into the business references the culture they grew up with in some ways. Steven Universe has a lot of it, but I remember South Park references in the original Power Puff Girls. It's kind of a natural progression, you grow up and are inspired by some art form, so you get into that art form professionally and pay homage to what inspired you. Then hopefully what you churn out is good enough to inspire the next guy, and the cycle continues.

Anime references are just like any other references, fine if done well and not used as a substitute for comedy. Keep it to background gags, maybe the protagonist owns a game you played as a kid, or a movie plays on the TV in the background. Stuff like that. Simple, unobtrusive, but those in the know appreciate it.
>>
>>89617277

I find it very dumb, like a battered wife syndrome, Otaku have a rabid hate for Western made stuff, specially cartoons, making "homages" to them is like telling your girlfriend how attractive those other guys are.

>>89617748

So this is why people say cartoon girls are ugly little shits? Why do cartoons even exist if Anime has already all figured it out?

Pic related isn't a reference so much as it is a parody. The entire episode is based on episode V
>>
>>89617799
This

The only people getting all up in arms about the references are the people who watched anime when they were younger.
>>
>>89618095
>that whole episode that was a scene-for-scene recreation of the animatrix
man, knd was so based
>>
References are fun, but I prefer them more subtle.

It should never feel out of context or weird to someone who doesn't know where it's from.

Like, when MLP originally did a parody of the ending of Star Wars, the scene worked perfectly well on its own and as someone who wasn't all that much into SW, it was simply neat to find out about it later.
But then when they later get Fluttershy to try and scare her friends by hanging carboard cutouts of 90s anime, the scene does not really make any sense whatsoever unless you see it as the shameless anime shoutout that it is... It sucks because it's the Halloween episode and as such, you also get a character dressed in an anime cosplay in the background which is much less intrusive way of doing stuff like this.

And then there's Gravity Falls...

To sum up, they can be good but they also must meet some standard of execution just like any other part of making the cartoons, they're not above it all as some easy and perfect way to fill out time in an episode.

Second one shows Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey. They got to visit Trigger since the westaboos there are big fans of Steven Universe. Takafumi Hori, one of their animators, worked on a SU episode as guest animator.
>>
I think I've said this in another thread, but it's okay for one work to have references to other works so long as it isn't overbearing. Megas XLR had a lot of references, but for the most part they're kept in low quantity and pertain to the setting and backdrop. Almost all of them were about mecha, kaiju, and other /m/-related media.
With Steven Universe I'm noticing innumerable direct references to a wide variety of series, including but not limited to Yoshi, Usagi Yojimbo, Sonic, Tiger-Man, Eva, Mazinger, JoJo, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Junji Ito horror stories, Akira, Dragon Ball/Z, the list goes on. Some episodes are using reference after reference after reference, and for many of these references it's simply copying them scene for scene. It's starting to get a little too much and, although I will say that the show at least makes sure they don't look out of place within the flow of the episode, I would like it if they did start toning them back down.
>>
>>89621284

SU references are entry-level stuff, showing how dishonest and post-ironic the the whole thing is.
Maybe the next generation of people won't be fragile enough to have to use several layers of irony to express themselves.
>>
>>89625528
Nobody wants to reference whatever obscure garbage you consider to be advanced-level anime. You fucking /a/ fucks call FLCL and Excel Saga entry level when it's literally impossible to get all the references without having watched anime for years and have a passing grasp of japanese language and culture concepts.

K-On gave me feels that I didn't think were possible. It fucking blew me away; was not expecting that at all. Hibike! Euphonium was fantastic too, though not nearly as good.

It's weird how we can't get shows like this in the US. If it's not a child's cartoon or some raunchy Family Guy clone, it doesn't get made.

I wasn't in a school band and I loved the first season. If followed a basic but very well executed Hero's journey. You don't need to be a band geek for the themes in that show to resonate with you.

S2 was weaker since it followed an arc pattern and focused less on Reina and Kumiko, but still great, except for the first 4 episodes.

I've never played an instrument and I thought the first season was fantastic. I think the second one tried to tell too much with too few episodes to do it properly, and that Kyoani should've expanded on the source material, but overall it was still good.

The music alone made the show, but the story and pacing were top notch. Plus the girls were 11/10

Oh look, it's the fun police.

God forbid we actually talk about animation here. Here, let's all bitch about capeshit for the 4,189,795th time.

It depends if they're any good or not.

References are one thing, outright memes and stolen bits are another.

What? As a consistent band geek through high school and college I found it annoying. Way too much drama for a fucking high school band. All that dumb shit about the upperclassman not practicing pissed me off consistently.

I think it might be a cultural thing though. In the US high school band was for fucking around and going on the band trip. Anybody who actually cared about playing did all county/state/region.

>In the US high school band was for fucking around and going on the band trip
sounds like your school was full of shitters who didn't care.

Oh it definitely was. There were maybe 20-30 kids who actually knew what they were doing, and the rest were there for the easy A.

But the thing is unless your a dedicated arts school, you either have to not let anybody in unless they really know what they're doing, or let people in even if they're lazy and shitty. And in my opinion being more inclusive with students is better just because it allows them the chance to learn music, even if it brings down the overall ensemble. The system of having the high school level ensembles be more open while letting serious players go to extracurricular ensembles I think works pretty well.

The cringiest part of SU tbqh.

It's also a dead giveaway that the creators don't care about actually making stories and just want to project their own childhoods on "the new generation!" as if it's cool or validating.

It feels like the Cartoons I used to watch on here with /co/, but can't because most of them are either on endless hiatus or 10 min clip memes.

Anime is just a word used to describe Japanese animation (cartoons).

Animé is a French word which translates to animation. Therefore any animation (cartoons) made in France could also, reasonably, be referred to as anime.

Anime and cartoons are the same thing. The only real difference is their region of origin.

Therefore, your question could be reworded as
> How do you feel about cartoon references in cartoons?
>>
>>89635837
The show is crap because the format doesn't let them tell actual stories without going into multiple episodes. That and they're constantly behind schedule or underfunded or what and release episodes haphazardly.

I don't actually think it's bad, I rather like it, but it's being suffocated by the format and they really need to step their game up and meet some deadlines.

Fun fact, the Gundam was originally meant to be all white like Stormtroopers from Star Wars, but the higher ups wanted it to be colorful like a Super Hero so it would be more kid Friendly.

Americans just don't truly understand Japanese writing of anime that hasn't been defecated by "localization".

I always enjoy the more subtle references shows can bring but when it's a frame for frame reference or they are doing everything but winking at the camera I just get turn off thinking they are either trying to hard to look cool or trying to win the audience with nostalgia.

I hadn't seen it (until very, very recently), but I could identify the references.

Hell there was a fucking EoE reference in MLP for fuck's sake. Two actually, although the other I can't post.

Kill la Kill has always had a polarizing presence on /a/ due to the "Trigger saves Anime" meme, which started before the anime even aired.

>Hell there was a fucking EoE reference in MLP for fuck's sake.

They're more like generic Evangelion references rather than EoE.
GF or SU did a full-on scene for scene reanimation of the weird shit happening in EoE.
...and conveniently left out all the good parts like the madman-tier quality animation of the fight between Asuka and the mass produced Evas, easily the best point of what is not even that great a movie.
