We haven't seen much of the character's care much about visible race. There's no real distinction made between ethnic groups or phenotypes in that sense. Even the Shartes we've seen range from Sette and her dad's vaguely mediterranianness and Stockyard being black. In fact, the Tains are the only group we've really seen get defined in such a way. Probably due to having no real nation.

But nations are the big divider and definer of people in the setting. Shartes, not any particular visual group but all Shartes, are considered one way, as are Crescians and Alds. People don't even really make a distinction between the flavors of Alds or their religions. Alds are all a bunch of weirdos to everyone else. The major sticking point is the national, cultural differences between the nation and everyone else. And people consider their loyalties heavily along national grounds too. Only Alderode seems to have big split loyalties along non-Nationalistic lines.

Your best-regarded lawyers and doctors are going to be Coppers and Jets, not entirely because they're privileged and often-wealthy castes but because they live so long that they can have been doing the treatment for fifty years or have actually been there when the statute was written. Imagine an American constitutional lawyer who was actually *there* when the constitution was drafted - how's that for originalism?

You probably see them going against each other in court too, given the Ssaelit/Gefendur divide in the castes and their historical rivalry. Mind you, I think a lot of courts in Alderode are religious courts.

Kinda incidental point to this: I don't know how long Unsounded's history is supposed to comprise but Ashley has at least nodded to at least a partial justification of "fantasy history syndrome" where everything happens in increments of thousands of years with little discernible progress and lots of lost knowledge.

Not only is there discernible progress (people have learned how to do things that many people have adopted, new things are figured out, knowledge is stored, etc) but the social allotment and extremely strong familial monarchy of Cresce, and the long Aldish lifespans and caste system, do a lot to justify a slower rate of it than we know. And you have Sharteshane bustling onto the scene and just inventing shit and leaving it around, I'm sure.

A lot of Unsounded's technology also seems irretrievably bound up in pymary too, which hits another sweet spot for me in terms of the whole fantasy 'magic/technology' divide. In a world with both there wouldn't be that division unless you force it - they would be linked. Like a lot of fantasy stuff has "fantasy war" which is basically medieval war vs. some nonhuman species or with a wizard thrown in. Unsounded follows through and makes it fantastical.

This definition by nation and not race reflects medieval Europe after christianity and China after unification. When you have a population base unified by religon (Europe) or law (China) people just pick other things to fight about. A norman english wouldn't like a saxon but they would unite against a frenchman. An English christian and a french christian would unite with a black christian from egypt or the holy land as long as it was against a muslim. And they would all unite against Genghis Khan.

Not only are they not present but the comic depicts a world that is almost the antithesis of what would be typical of an sjw writer.
Consider that Cresce is a Matriarchal socialist state inhabited entirely by black people and it is not depicted as entirely good and Alderode a patriarchal nation of mostly of caucasian looking people is not depicted as entirely bad, in the hands of a lesser writer the urge to turn these countries into strawmen to showcase racial prejudice would be too strong.
This is why despite some of the more cringe inducing political opinions she puts on her tumblr I give Ashley the benefit of the doubt.

It actually kind of hard to predict deaths in this comic. It's a pretty brutal comic, but the vast majority of important deaths happened about two chapters ago, at a big climax. Otherwise the characters get to live just to suffer some more.

The Queen's probably got at least a few chapters in her, which is probably going to be a few years worth of real time. Her continued existence keeps the tension around the coup in Cresce going. Toma's got to be there to, for narrative significance reasons.

On the practical end, because she's probably not going to be dying until the gang meets up with her or where she is, the story needs to get through the construct factory, which might last longer than this chapter depending. Then they need to get to that port and do the plot there.
