Birch and Liam are cousins and their families might live in a duplex (I didn't bother to confirm), which would make their relationship very close to that of siblings.

In some episodes they seem to be the only people who get along tolerably well, although Birch is something of a bratty li'l sis type with him.

Sometimes Liam is a bit...off, though.

Sandra is a bitch.

She's very nearly a bully character stereotype in several episodes (antagonizing Birch for no reason), which would have been pretty interesting if it was consistent; forcing the lead and the bully to constantly interact via the school's "pod" system would actually put a new spin on the conventional character relationships.

It doesn't really follow through, though; sometimes she's more friendly and there is a dead straight "mean girl at school" character as well. This show is kind of lazy.

Why would anyone want to watch this poor man's Serenity?
