Maybe. But I suspect two more likely factors:
-They don't know what to actually write if they let any status-changing things proceed like relationships.
-They think a loser with no romantic prospects is more relatable for their actual target audience, tumblr and 20 somethings.

I just looked it up, turns out he tweeted it in November 2015. I suppose it could be referencing his stuff in season 7 as well: Crossover, Flute Spell and I am a Sword were all pretty rough on Finn.
