Also, I think this is kind of overrated, with some autobio comics that came later being much better from a narrative standpoint. With that said, it is a very important book, and something that changed the paradigm of American comic books forever.

Most books in this category with any biographical elements are going to be skewed and biased.

The Japanese didn't care much about what was happening in Europe, they cared about their own endeavors. As Germany and Italy gave no fucks about what was happening with Japan, it was just a symbolic alliance really.

Quite a few autobiographical manga from Japan (like Barefoot Gen) don't talk about the European powers during the war, only what was happening between Japan, Asia and the US.

Honestly, the European theatre and the Pacific theatre are almost two completely separate wars whose timelines overlap. We (Americans/Anglos) see them as one war as we fought both simultaneously.

Maus may be the only story about the holocaust I actually like.
Mainly because of Vladek and his personality since most stories of this sort you would think the author would not include the less appealing aspects of Vladeks personality but their inclusion really adds to the narrative, that and the fact that I think may be the only work about world war 2 nonfictional or otherwise that actually humanizes the nazis and germans, the little details like the polish guard at Auschwitz wanting to learn german or the other guard that was friendly with Vladdek since they were from teh same town or the prisoner that claimed he was german or the mixed family that sheltered him, it's refreshing to see a story that remembers that while events can be good or bad people are more complicated than the where they are from.

Vladdek fucking hated commies and since the story was from mostly his perspective it would not include that even if he was aware which he probably wasn't and the book was published in the 80's when it would have been pretty fucking ballsy to paint commies as good.

Well, it was one of the first indie comics to hit mainstream success and coverage. It was also one of the first proper autobio comics and one of the first comic books to deal with a real world issue (the Holocaust) in a non-sensationalist, ficticious manner. It wasn't the first one of any of those of course, but put them together, and you get quite the revolutionary comic book.

The Internationale was especially mediocre at its job of organizing for global communist revolution. It had not enough resources, cautioned against openly revolutionary activity and under orders from Stalin portrayed France and Britain as Imperialist Aggressors against Germany before Operation Barbarossa. Additional note: Anja was translating letters into german, and passing them along. This mean they were either coming from Poland and going to Germany; Coming from Poland and going to the Comintern, (Communist Internationale) in Moscow, where one of the official languages was german (to help international communists communicate with each other) or just a local Polish Commnist Party representative of Comintern; or something in an informal network. The Comintern had an extensive, continent wide network of agents passing along coded letters, telegrams and cash to national communist parties.

That plus the 19th and 20th centuries were the era of nation-states forming. Jews and Gypsies were "others" and didn't have a homeland to go to (sionist projects notwithstanding).
They didn't fit anywhere, and nationalism was a much more intense sentiment than it is today. The "Jewish problem" was seen as an inevitable conflict. If modern political entities needed to be built around national identities, how could you ever trust outsiders? One thing that should be pointed.
One of the reasons that poles are presented as pigs, because in jewish tradition, pigs are not-kosher, ie. unclean, ungodly.

Some people are taking offense to Poles being pigs obviously. Even going as far as saying the book is anti-Polish propaganda (as there was such propaganda after the war since Poland was in Eastern Bloc).
However if one actually reads it the book shows both bad and good Poles and in the camp scenes it is clear there are Poles mixed with the Jews. I assume it's accurate.
As a Pole I have no problem with Maus.

Note that in Polish calling someone a pig is a bit harsher than in English; it doesn't mean only a dirty or perverted person (although it can be used as that too), it basically denounces them as evil and untrustworthy; basically similar to "son of a bitch"

I do agree however that the book portrays good and bad people, but the characters are also presented as caricatures and stereotypes. The book basically bashes itself, and plays with the symbolism.

Also, it's worth noting that jews were angry that they were presented as victims, and according to one story, when Art was discussing the book with the survivors, one of them asked "couldn't you wait at least until we die, before you decided to ridicule us".

There are a lot of interviews, and it's obvious that Art was suffering a little mental disorder in how he conflicted he was with himself, and self-destructive

The thing about Polish involvement in Holocaust is that Poles tend to emphasize their role in saving and hiding Jews as well as being killed by Nazis as well while Western media (sometimes even specified to "New York Times" or NY Jews) tend to emphasize instances of Polish antisemitism, sometimes to the point of basically co-blaming them for the Holocaust along with the Nazis (the whole "Polish death camps" vs "Nazi death camps in Poland" debacle). Which in turn breeds actual antisemitism in Poland. Add to this the fact that quite a few Jews joined communist parties coupled with Polish hatred towards Soviets.

Maus shows both attitudes. Some Poles are hiding Jews, risking their lives and others are either ratting them out or exploiting them. At the same time Poles are shown as the occupied nation, not complicit one. Also it's a story about a very specific, real life Jew. Polish resistance does not show in the book because Władek never joined it or even met it, it's as simple as that.

Also we didn't live in a place that would have given her any support for it and when they divorced she was emotionally drained and sick from being in a relationship with him.

I also didn't mention how she worked so he would study freely for his career as a doctor and how she gave him money to make his own clinic and he repaid her by fucking the nurse who then got pregnant with a kid and both leached off something my mother worked so hard to build.

The second part also goes more into detail what Mala also related, which was that Vladek wasn't really indicative of the survivors either. There's also the fact that Vladek has a fairly self serving memory, though I wouldn't accuse him of flat out lying. His whole story with Lucia is a little spoiled by what we see of him and Mala in the present, where it's also clear Mala isn't perfect but isn't nearly the witch Vladek thinks she is. It's very likely his skills and resourcefulness are the reasons he survived his journey, but plenty of other people survived without those and it's also obvious, as Art relates, that it's not like having to do this stuff to survive made him into the person he is today entirely. He was doing all that before, if not necessarily so extremely.

Maus is interesting because it's both Vladek's story and what Vladek thinks his story is. He doesn't whitewash things, but it's not hard to wonder if the tales of the success of his resourcefulness aren't somewhat exaggerated. He's clearly got a bit of a rosy memory going on, what with Anja and Richieu, and thinks incredibly highly of himself. On the other hand, it's hard not sympathize with that attitude a little, because if even half of what he says is true, and I'd bet it's considerably more than half, his life has almost entirely justified it. Even if, given other people's stories, it's not the be all, end all thing he seems to think it is. After all, we see plenty of resourceful Jews who didn't make it. Vladek himself seems to recognize as he tells his stories how lucky he was at points. Luck and the ability to capitalize on it were the keys to Vladek's survival.
