Alright let's put this to bed once and for all. There is no way in hell Fern is ending up with Huntress Wizard, for several reasons.

1) It's not interesting. Fern's arc is set up to deal with issues of identity and self worth. I can't see why the writers would choose to muddy that up with an unnecessary romance. It distracts from a potentially very compelling story arc and adds absolutely nothing in return.

2) Flame Princess. The writers fucked up with Flame Princess and they know it. The chances of them repeating the same mistake are virtually zero. From what we've seen from season 6 to now is that Finn has matured greatly in handling interpersonal relationships, and for the writers to backpedal now and cuck him again would be fucking dumb.

3) They're setting up Finn x Huntress Wizard. I believe it is telling the Huntress Wizard content we've gotten already in Season 8. In 'Wheels' when Finn plays his flute, we see HW pop out of the trees to listen. If this was all they'd included then I'd easily dismiss it as a little joke to the audience, but they actually took the time to focus in on her as she did this. In an 11 minute show, there is little time to spare, so the fact that they'd take the time to add that in says a lot. It's the exact same thing with the whole Korrasami blush moment in season 4. There is no reason to include a moment like that unless you're building to SOMETHING. Then in Islands we see her in a brief flashback with Finn which may seem insignificant, but given there was only 10 seconds total flashback time, it is a very peculiar scene to include.

Might be a coincidence, but Finn means "Discover" in Swedish. Mertens seems like a bastardization of the swedish surname Mårtens (which is derived from Martin) and Frida is a very common Swedish name.
