Real Talk™: I wanted Scarface to be the villain in Dark Knight Rises.

Scarface fits in perfectly with the psychological themes of the first two movies; A man with a split violent sociopath personality who retreats behind his subservient frightened side when caught.

It made more sense to me than Bane who was just a brute always searching for more lifesaving gas. They made him smarter and have him a more political motivation for TDKR but I don't know. His legacy was becoming a meme.

It makes sense to me. Making the gangster a literal puppet is a pretty postmodern idea. The same goes for the mastermind being a totally meek, quiet, understated guy (the exact opposite of bombastic Joker types).
It makes sense when people are looking back on past eras of gangster films & comics alike.

If he were a '30s/40s villain, he would probably be a midget gangster who coincidentally resembled a puppet, and he'd do puppet-themed crimes.

The funny thing about romanticizing Batman as a noir figure, is that old Batman comics really weren't much like what we think of as noir now. Its only later when those noir conventions became readily identifiable that we saw them applied to Batman .
