How do I get into the western cartoon animation industry? When I look up info of people in the industry I admire they all went to an art school for a degree in animation and all work in California. I live in the U.S. but don't really like the thought of living in L.A. Is there really no other way?

The reality of showbiz is that you have to go where the work is. If you don't like LA, consider NY or Canada.

sadly this.
the question is why they insist on everything being in one place. voice actors don't even record together anymore, why do they all need to live in LA? why cant an animator work in fucking russia and just email it in, since everything's digital anyway? it's not like they need to fucking scan it.
even if you think supervisors need to supervise, they can just skype

Because they want to justify the nepotism at play by pretending they have to hire by locale.
The comics industry already moved away from centralized work YEARS ago.

Hollywood is a very powerful club that would lose significant power if it allowed its members to be anywhere but LA. It's not that they can't have anything in one place, they don't want it to be anywhere else.

well if you know the amount of work animation takes (shows or movies) and the number of people involved it makes sense to work near each other just for that sense of community.
with that aside, say you set up an animation studio to do cartoons that will go on T.V. somewhere not in hollywood. well you'll be flying a lot to hollywood anyway cause all the major broadcasting and producing companies are there and you gotta go pitch it and work with them to make it happen. so you really might as work there.
the solution? the internet. make shows/animated movies that you can put online no matter where your studio is. the problem with that is that the level of quality your studio is putting out must be pretty fucking good to actually survive on your own outside the hollywood machine. or you must gather rabid fans who will pay you to survive and keep going.
