I think he started out kind of crooked, met a woman who made his life complete who he honestly cared about, then in one night his old life came back and fucked it up royally. He went through the extremely traumatic event of losing his partner, newborn child, and literally everything and everyone he'd known his entire life in a single night, and woke up the next day in a chaotic world that was completely alien to him.

The island episodes implied that Minerva had some kind of a psychotic break after she lost her family, not a hard stretch to assume Martin did the same, except he also had the added guilt of knowing it was his fault. We don't know anything that happened to him between then and when he reappeared later on, but it seems like he's decided that not caring about anyone but himself is the only way to keep from being hurt, and from hurting others.

Well i personally liked islands more then stakes. And fin probably was able to leave pretty fast as all the big questions were answered in a pretty short timescale. What happened to humans, were did he come from, and his parents all answered.

If one of them died, well alright hold on.
So first of all, let's get out of the way the fact that they are, by all definitions, different people.
The second their consciousnesses split and they started making new memories that are private from each other, they would deviate enough to be considered unique.
However, them being individuals doesn't change the fact that, up to a point in time, they are the same person, and so have both fulfilled the requirements of being my mother.
Now for the next part, let's call it "would I react to one of their deaths", it all depends on how much time has passed/ how different they have become. If they haven't had enough time to deviate from each other, like in the show where his mother sacrifices her physical body in order to upload herself, it would most likely not effect me. The residual consciousness would simply be a continuation with a change. Nothing to be upset about.
If they were significantly separated and I had maintained good relations with both offshoots though, I could see myself mourning her loss. It would also probably be a pretty trippy experience for the remaining mother.

Most likely not. However advanced their technology might be, psychologically humans are childish and immature. When asked about their fears they responded with "spiders" and "frogs", even Minerva believed that leaving the island would destroy them. Not to mention they were pretty content living carefree lives and didn't express any real desire to leave, for the most part.
I think getting a new human adventurer from the islands as a recurring c-list charater (Frida) is all we can expect.

Islands is not the AT seasons, except technically. Islands are way above what you've watched in S7 and S8 so far, and they really aren't representative of the quality currently. S8 is great, however we've had mediocre episodes like James Baxter and Jake the Grandpa in retrospect. I'm not convinced these two things are entirely mutually exclusive. For instance, in the episodes 'The Tower' and 'The cooler.' The writers need PB to be a little morally ambiguous in pretending to be Martin in order to get Finn to let out his pent up anger, and in destroying the fire guardians. At the same time they also demonstrate that PB does this purely out of good intentions, and at the end of The Cooler even turns off her entire surveillance setup after realising she had crossed the line.

'The Cooler,' 'Pajama Wars,' 'Varmints,' 'Thin Yellow Line,' 'Bun Bun,' 'The Music Hole' all show signs of PB beginning to grow as a person. In Varmints, PB opens up to her past personal failings as a friend to Marceline, and begins to understand why her people turned against her. In 'The Thin Yellow Line' she allows the Banana guards more freedom, and encouraged them to express themselves. In 'Bun Bun', she goes out of her way to make CB happy, who is no longer part of her kingdom. In The Music Hole she puts on a concert just to cheer Finn up.

It's there anon, and while she retains some of the more morally questionable parts of her personality, we are definitely seeing a great deal of character development from PB, which is only going to grow with the upcoming elemental arc.

Horse was dissatisfied with his job in the city, goes off to the forest to start a new simpler life.

After cheering up a girl bat by balancing on a ball and saying "James Baxter", he realizes he can find joy in making others happy, and goes around doing just that.

That's all he focuses on. Girl bat follows him around because she's in love with him, but he never reciprocates because he's too focused, and she flies away sad again.

He continues living on like this. One day his ball is popped and he's suddenly jolted back to reality. He can't function without the ball.

Finn makes him realize that he should be trying to make himself happy instead of making others happy and being satisfied by proxy.

So the horse gets up and starts dancing. People don't get all giddy when they watch him do this, like they did when he was balancing on the ball. But he's making himself happy by dancing.

They took a character with a simple gimmick and tried to give him a deeper personality, it's not an uncommon routine.

My impression is that Martin suffered some memory loss when the Guardian's eye exploded and knocked him into the ocean. That's why he didn't seem to recall even having a son when he first met Finn, and that's why his flashback in The Visitor was hazy on the details.

Reuniting with Finn seems to have resulted in some memories returning (hence naming his escape ship "The Minnie"), but not enough to give him the full picture.
