Because he couldn't save his original Morty. We saw in Rick encounters of the rick kind in the memory machine him playing with a young Morty and Get Schwifty Birdman has a picture of him and baby Morty however 3 episodes in season 1 and 2 in season 2 make it clear he just recently came back in the families lives (less than a year) episode and according to Beth Rick hasn't been in her life or visited since Rick left her mother.

Cause this isn't Ricks first Morty, and he on at least some kind of level loves this Morty. Could be a lot, could be a little, but Rick loves this Morty at least 1/96 more than he loves himself.
