They go to all this trouble to cram down your throat how Dr.Manhattan used to be a man and is feeling more and more disconnected from society.

And then they do a similar feat with Ozymandias. That he is so seperate from people/humans. Not that he see's himself above them, he really is like a "mutant" like a homo superior, the next time.

And readers of the comic STILL think that either of these two men had an grasp on humanity at all, that they could predict its behavior. If you think Ozymandias "won" that's one thing, if you think he was "right" you're missing a huge point of his character.

The peace can only last so long before people will say the cooperation is pointless as there hasn't been another attack. At that point Ozy either has to concoct another squid, or let the peace go.

And it doesn't solve the actual problem of the Cold War, the Capitalist/Communist dialectic. Of course, Watchmen!USSR was much weaker than the real USSR, which collapsed only a few years later.

Also, since the invasion of Afghanistan was prevented, America never armed the mujahideen, potentially preventing the war on terror, preventing one of the reason for the collapse of Fukuyama's End of History (which, along with the reaction, is essential for any discussion of the future of Ozy's plan)

Rorschach would condemn the human race to destroy itself.

Veidt does, at least, offer a chance of peace to humanity.

Even Dr. Manhattan recognizes this. While exposing that Veidt's plot may not result in world peace forever, it gives humanity another chance (implying that the future is not pre-determined). To preserve this opportunity, Dr. Manhattan decides to interfere. He decides to confront Rorschach. And during their conversation Manhattan realizes that Rorscach cannot be reasoned with.

I think Rorschach realizes this, too. That he is beyond reason.

In his final scene, when he removes his mask and tears are running down his face, and he repeats "DO IT!" I believe he's crying because he knows he cannot change himself, and that he would condemn humanity for his prideful principles. I believe that he knows that he needs to die because he refuses to offer the world mercy or forgiveness.

I don't think Dr. Manhattan punishes Rorschach. Instead, I believe he obliges him.
