It's too autistic and serious for Japan

Japan loves Gumball
Japan is indifferent to Steven Universe

is that a joke? autism might as well be japans biggest export.

I was gonna start a thread about this but this is a better place to post

Recently met a Japanese exchange student at my uni, not really a westaboo, but big on anime and wanted to learn more about western animation, old and new.

We sat down and I showed him some steven universe and he seemed a little confused because everyone was a lesbian but it wasn't really sexy, and was surprised to hear it was a kid show and not something aimed at Western otaku. He liked pearl and lapis tho.

He also thought garnet was a man and only realized she was a she after hearing her sing.

He thought it had a nice look but that it didn't really seem to go anywhere. I showed him some of the bomb episodes back to back and he said those were a lot closer to the kind of stuff he was used to and suggested they should just make those arcs into ovas while keeping the episodic stuff as tv material. Apparently they have obscene amounts of spinoff for shows in japan.

On a somewhat related note I showed him samurai jack and he said it was the kind of stuff his dad would like. But he lost his shit over aku and thought he was the coolest.

Garnet doesn't look like a man...she is probably the curviest character. What the hell?

The rest is valid.
>>
>>89450278
>everyone was a lesbian but it wasn't really sexy
How is that a valid critism?
>>
>>89450123
There's a pretty dedicated fanbase in Japan for Steven and the gems.
But if there's a place SU is popular, it's Korea.
>>
>>89450278
In Japan, Garnet has a deep as fuck voice courtesy of Mitsuki "Rossiu" Saiga. I thought she was voiced by a dude at first.
>>
>>89450289
From the point of view of a japanese guy, it is understandable.

Wouldn't mind a sexier design too. Rebecca S likes to draw Garnet showing her tits anyway.
>>
>>89450123
From what I've gathered, Gumball, SU and WBB are the hottest CN shows in Japan.
WBB even has exclusive merchandise in glorious Nippon.
>>
>>89450289

The point is that the anime he's used to features lots of cute and/or hot lesbians.
>>
I go to 2channel occasionally to practice Japanese and among the drawfags there's a humorous reverse-4chan effect happening. Basically some guys who normally draw porn are so moved from the relationships that they refuse to draw porn.

Elsewhere in 4chan, more people get mad because this show is about lesbians who can change into any form and they choose stick girls and plum bodies.
>>
>>89450376

I don't know what the ratings are but the general Japanese opinion among Japanese nerds is

>Peridot is cute
>Amethyst is hilarious
>They listen to the undubbed music on Youtube because it's great
>It's referred to as a "gentle" anime, although the kanji used could also mean "elegant" or "classy."
>There are some animation nerds who love that the show nods to 80s and 90s anime, and then they talk about the disappointment with moe-style designs

So among their niche, whatever size it is, Steven Universe is well accepted. Can't say anything about ratings however.
>>
It's pretty popular, yeah. They're not interested in alt-right memes and hiveminds.
>>
>>89450317

And Rick and Morty, strangely. You'd think that one would have too many ingrained Western jokes but I guess it has enough action to balance that.
>>
>>89450632

Adventure Time and Undertale are more popular.
>>
No. SU is filled with hideous ugly body creatures that non fat dykes hate. Anime females are perfect/thin/beautiful in contrast. There's no reason they would like the ugly hideous designs of su.
>>
>>89455928
1. There's very little fat characters in SU.
2. Fat characters appear in Japanese works.
>>
>>89453800
Currently, the new trend in magical girl anime is dark, deconstrucitve shows like Madoka.
A show like SU which plays magical girl shows straight would probably seem refreshing.
>>
>>89457796
>There's very little fat characters in SU.
Of the main 4 cast, Steven, Amethyst and Garnet would be fat by Japanese standards.
Remember Japan doesn't have a 70% overweight population like the US and doesn't consider being fat the norm.

How would she be considered fat? It's all in her thighs.

Not only has Steven thinned out but there's characters like Biscuit from IBO. So it's not like Japan are that against fat characters in media.

There's a manga coming out in Japan right now called Houseki no Kuni that's about far future gem people. I've never actually watched SU, but I know it at least involves semi-genderless? gem people.

I think it's kinda Japan's SU.
>>
>>89450582
I heard Amethyst is very popular with some Japanese. When they saw Amethyst's backstory they were "dead" as they put.
>>
>>89457999

>It's all in her thighs.
Your American is showing. I'm sure living in a country where 70% of everyone you meet is fat, you probably think just being fat in your thighs makes you not fat. But in healthy asian countries, fat in thighs means your fat.
And who cares about IBO, I'm talking about SU not whether fat people appear in anime.
>>
>>89458055
Confirmed for not understanding what Japan considers cute and beautiful (there's a distinction over there).
>>
Phineas and Ferb is the most popular cartoon in Japan. At least among kids in school. No idea what western stuff otakus like.
>>
>>89458002
Some people will say yes, others will say no
In truth its a mixed bag because the story-boarders write the episodes they work on, some are better at this than others
watch and see if you like it yourself, its the best way.
>>
>>89458120
Japan doesn't consider ugly fats "cute" you baka gaijin.
>>
>>89458066
First of all, the whole fat makes no sense because the Gems are made of light and can shapeshift.

And 2, big thighs doesn't fucking equal fat; if anything it would muscle in Garnet's case. By that logic, Chun Li is fat.

And you're foreign is showing, considering IBO is a Gundam show, which is pretty big in Japan.
>>
>>89457847
>SU which plays magical girl shows straight
I'm trying hard to avoid the low-hanging fruit there.

for me, SU feels like the story that comes after a space opera; humans enslaved, an alien rebel turning against her kind, a costly war to save Earth with a bittersweet conclusion... and that was all long before Steven was born.
>>
>>89458155
And yet Simpsons and Gumball are super popular over there.
>>
>>89450211
>he seemed a little confused because everyone was a lesbian but it wasn't really sexy

>>
>>89458211

>>
>>89458187

What are you even talking about at this point?
>>
>>89458254

Simpsons has thin characters, the only fat one is homer.

Gumball is all animal creatures and doesn't even apply.

SU on the other hand has fatasses, blacks, and other minorities en masse that are stylized as humans (but they are rocks xDDDD) which no one in Japan enjoys.
>>
>>89458236
>Simpsons
>good writing
Maybe if you're talking about the Golden Age Simpsons.
>>
>>89458309
So what did you feel the need to bring up writing?

>>89458339

>>
>>89458362

>>
>>89458362
Precure is literally meant for little girls with grown men being a side market but a lot of "adult" magical girl shows are taking the dark and edgy route.
>>
>>89458358

>>
>>89458020
They're all the exact same but with different hair and clothes. Their designs are so wonky that even when their eyes are falling off their faces you hardly register it. I don't understand this kind of style. There's good designs in anime, but these kind of shows just look awful.

Most people agree that Stronger Than You is one of the best parts of the series. The rest of Steven Universe has its ups and downs, most of it being easygoing stories with lots of character development, hidden lore, and subtle buildup to climactic moments. The song is one of those climactic moments, and it's even better if you have all the proper context; since you've seen it already, you've been spoiled on Garnet being a fusion of two gems (unless you didn't understand the significance of that) but you might like to see all the hints they had towards it in retrospect.

Okay since anon didn't manage to hammer it into your skulls I will.

Japan, Korea, and most of Asia has a different definition of skinny. Pearl is deemed 'average'. They don't want strength in a girl, they want a lithe figure that can be attained only on a bowl of rice a day, something demure, petite, and looks like you'd snap them in half if you hug too hard.

Fat lips, large thighs, round waist. None of these are ideal.

People call asian people who make fanart of cartoon shows "westaboos"

Yeah, it's pretty niche, but the fanart that is made is nice.
>>
>>89463552
Real life notwithstanding, a good amount of anime waifus will be designed with big tits and hips more in common with what you'd see from non-asian girls. And Pearl is definitely not average. She's way skinnier than average.

Anime is not real, anon, it can't be your friend.
And if it were, it would be doing more important things with its time, I guarantee you.

It's okay to want friends, anon.
But anime is not your friend.
Sure, we pick up some stuff from anime: japanese words, an insight into the culture. But it's just sequential images drawn by underpaid artists, it has no true form in the real world.
Get some help, buddy: you don't have be alone forever.

This writer knows what the fuck they're talking about and I can respect that.

In the West (read: Amerifats), feminism has taken a turn wherein femininity is seen as a positive again. It's okay to be a woman that has lots of sex, or likes to stay at home, or takes care of the children, because those are feminine things, and feminine things are now cool again, and man wouldn't men be so much calmer if they worried less and gave into their desires to be more feminine because really who doesn't wanna be more feminine? i say this as a sizefag and an occasional dabbler into gentle femdom

In Japan, they haven't made it to that point yet. "Weaponized femininity" doesn't really exist in Japan, at least not in mass culture.

It's annoying because it really highlights the cultural disparity between Japan's anime and western culture. On one hand, anime gives you shit that modern western animation companies are too afraid/poor to put money on, shit that's too high concept for television shows but too serious/complex for cartoons. But on the other hand the nature of anime means that it'll always feel like a cultural window into another world, one where you'll always feel like a second class citizen at best. You'll never really get an anime that's exactly the way you'd want it, because the things that you want in an anime are likely distinctly different from what the faggots over on 2ch and the other Japanese message boards want, and ultimately they are the target audience. The fact that millions watch and enjoy anime in the rest of the world is seen as little more than a convenient coincidence.

This is changing bit by bit, but Japan is really fucking slow with progress.

I feel like it's also important to note that unless we want to completely stamp out any individual cultures (which is one of those times where it turns out the leftist/rightist thing is actually a circle and if you go far enough in either direction there's a new, nightmarish middle), Japanese progress might not be the same as American progress.

I do know what you mean about that disconnect, though the only examples that comes to mind are shounen.

I myself know very little about this cartoon, and I bet 90% of Americans can't say this cartoon's title.
Those ToonBoom typed cartoons are in little demand outside of the US and Leaf land tbfh.
Digitally drawn animation is a hopeless failure culture, just give it up, and concentrate on making CG animation to the fullest.

Steven Universe isn't drawn digitally, it's hand animated in Korea.

>Digitally drawn animation is a hopeless failure culture
Tell that to all of the web-gen animators that are becoming more prominent in the japanese animation industry. several studios are slowly making a shift towards digital animation production anyway.

With some rare exceptions, in Japanese media lesbians exist only to turn on straight men. So even if the other anon's Japanese friend thinks that's horrible and all that stuff, it would still make sense for them to take a moment to realize "Oh, American anime is a bit different."

Nigga shut up. We are talking about character designs are PERCEPTION. Nobody really gives a fuck about the background lore except for US, the shut-ins that know trivia facts because we pay attention to subtle details.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Japanese audience thought that Garnet was fat because her thighs are large as fuck.
