It was great. It didn't get as much attention as BTAS because it didn't have as many emmy worthy episodes, but overall the quality was as good or better.
>>
Was it me or was Superman a bit of a jobber in this show?
>>

Brilliantly executed update to the world that Superman exists in and his villains, but Superman himself is bad because the creators don't like him as much as Batman.

The Superman Adventures comics based off the show are far superior.

It's pretty good, consistent start to finish. I am picky about certain things that I would not want in other versions (like Brianiac being Kryptonian in origin) but most of it worked for this specific universe.
>>
>>89435677
It's real good. Low power levels, good stakes, interesting characters, great Braniac/Krypton opening, had both strong and smart superman, and set the path for JL(u). At least an 8/10, maybe a 9.

If the Apokalips Now story had aired now /co/ would first be shocked with the aftermath...which would quickly change to accusing the show being for jews because a rabbi presides over Turpin's funeral

He was, Timm isn't a huge Superman fan and he didn't want Batman (his favorite) to get shown up, so literally the only character with powers who wasn't downplayed was Amazo.

no but it would never air because it would be deemed as too much, that or near the end it would turn out that turpin was teleported away at the last second by the legion

Great show, actually had a Batman v. Superman thing that objectively more interesting than the movie and Tim Daly is the best voice for Superman.
>>
classic show
>>
>>89436738
I'd say STAS had a higher average quality in terms of both animation and story, but BTAS had much higher highs and lower lows. STAS was only ever very good, but when BTAS really nailed an episode it was amazing.

The low Superman power levels were actually part of what made the show so great. He was powerful, but not so powerful that he could easily overcome any obstacle.

I liked how even he often had to struggle. It might help to remember that this show was born during the immediate post-Crisis where Byrne's Man of Steel and the following era really tried to tone down Superman's powers from their Silver/Bronze Age heights.
>>
This show is responsible for the DEFINITIVE voices for all of these characters:

>Superman
>Lois
>Lex
>Brainiac
>Darkseid
>Lobo
>Mxy

The fuck up of replacing Superman's VA for JL is so huge I really can't overstate it. I get that they had no choice and that the new VA improved in the later JL / JLU seasons but the S:TAS was perfect.
>>

STAS was brilliant and got Superman and his world so right.

It's completely baffling how in STAS and BTAS DC had the perfect template for their characters onscreen and still managed to completely fuck up their movies.

They'd have to do some tweaking, of course, to translate the cartoons into movies, but they seriously already had the perfect versions and tons of stories to use.
>>
Lois and Clark is overall better but it's still consistent fun
>>
>>89439497
I honestly think Corey Burton's Brainiac voice is his best voice. Better than his Shockwave voice.

Fuck, for the longest time I've wanted to hear him do a Shockwave WITH Brainiac's voice. It would be the perfect voice for the cold, emotionless Shockwave from the comics.

One thing STAS really excels in over BTAS is character writing, especially dialogue. with BTAS, the fact that you where watching a genre cartoon never really left, and a lot of it verges on melodrama. granted, this suits the whole tone of the show, but its hard to take them seriously as characters who exist outside of the framing of the show. But with Superman, the character interaction for a lot of the main cast felt so natural at times you almost forget its a superhero cartoon. To the point where I almost feel I'd watch a series with STAS Clark and the Planet staff without the superhero elements. The crux of most Superman adaptations is how Clark and Lois interact, and STAS did it perfectly.
>>
>>89439675
I know it's not the best episode, but I really liked "The Prometheon" because it was a great homage to the 1930s pulp SF stories that Superman was born from. It has a lot of great art in it.
>>
>>89439675
The two-parter that introduces Supergirl has always held a place in my heart simply because of how brilliantly they threaded the needle on her relationship to Superman and Krypton.

Need Supergirl? But also need Superman to keep his "Last Son of Krypton" title? Just make Supergirl come from a colonized planet in Krypton's star system. Such a brilliant solution, and obvious in hindsight.
>>
>>89436282
>I am picky about certain things that I would not want in other versions (like Brianiac being Kryptonian in origin)

Why not? That worked really well and helped cement their relationship.

Have no idea why I watched this when I was a kid. Every episode is damsel in distress featuring Lois, they even made fun of it couple times, it's just ridiculous. Seems like whole show had much lower production value than other series, because it's always same bunch of characters on screen and background rarely changes. I think it's weakest series in DCAU.

I liked it until I read the comics, which I found to be far superior. Mostly because Millar and McCloud were more passionate about Superman, and Millar drew a lot from wacky Bronze age adventures, rather than having a depowered Superman get in fights with villain of the week, which happened to be the bread and butter of the show.

I wish it wasn't so strongly based on the Byrne/Jurgens/Kesel era. That's probably my least favorite period of Superman's history.

Other than that though, the show was pretty great. It brought in a lot of characters from the comics and tried very hard to be faithful to them.

>but Superman himself is bad because the creators don't like him as much as Batman

I'd argue they liked Clark Kent more than him being Superman. Especially since the episodes always had a first act setup with Kent and exploring the human side instead of just having him become Supes and tear shit up from the get go. The episode where they introduce Live Wire is pretty great because the first act is mainly based around the Daily Planet offices. Lois' disgust that a shock jock is taking the headlines while Clark is interested not cause she's shit talking superman, but how she's holding power and influence over the working class in Metropolis with her rants and opinions that he goes to the anti-Superman Rally to see who shows up. And only changes into Superman when the storm suddenly rolls in and everyone is in danger.

I think the writers liked exploring the Clark/Superman relationship way more than Bruce/Batman in BTAS which is why Superman isn't as interesting.

>>89444798

Ironside is an avowed pacifist and doesn't want to play extremely violent characters any more (One of the reasons he stopped voicing Sam Fisher in Spinter Cell and a lot of his recent work has been background roles or heroes). A lot of DC versions of Darkseid lately are just violent thugs so I wouldn't be surprised if he turned them down. He also said he was really fond of DCAU Darkseid because he and he was a fan of Kirby's Fourth World and the role was written so well that Darkseid menace was way more evident in his words than his actions.

The way DC has written animated Darkseid lately has been awful where he is way more of a violent thug that I wouldn't be surprised if he turned them all down.

I'd cream if they got him back for Young Justice Season 3 because if there's anyone who could write an amazing Darkseid, who would be terrifying without lifting a finger, it's Greg Wiseman.

Because most writers who depower Superman are uncreative hacks who want to write cookie cutter plots with Superman having to punch the bad guys and some added soap opera .

Then there's stuff like For the man who has everything, Supreme and All Star Superman, where his power levels never mattered. There's Millar's Superman adventures, most of whose stories consisted of Superman having to think out of a situation which couldn't have been solved by just outpunchinging the bad guys.

there are so many. I like the tools of the trade because its so cool and manhiem is a scumbag. I like The two parter last sone of krypton and wish it had been the template for the live action movie. I loved the death of clark kent for that marvelous ending that, if you watch the show in order, works out even better because you suspect the villian less after the false flag from a different episode before.

Such a good show.

f/d shipping? also is it him that is responsible for candie cane?

Dude, you nailed it, thats what makes DC villains (and good villains in general) so great. Lex was like this too, a credible threat that was untouchable because of his public appearance.

I love that they eventually did every memorable incarnation of luthor. Business man for crime, Evil scientist and even corrupt president.
>>
>>89449854
I was thinking the same thing. Once you know what truly happened in that scene, it really puts the whole DCAU in perspective.

Generic DCAU garbage

Waaaaaaaaa? How did he die? The only Parasite appearance I remember is when he got beat by Captain Marvel.

He was among those villains who failed in their mutiny and got frozen by Killer Frost. Even if had somehow survived that, Darkseid blew up their spaceship soon afterwards.

You know stuff like that gave more strength to Hamilton's distrust of Superman. I mean look at the subtle yet deliberate clues given:

Remember how that 1 reporter asked Superman if he deliberately allowed Live Wire to be electrocuted because she was smearing him on the airwaves? It certainly would appear that way.

In Stolen Memories, we're introduced to DCAU Brainiac whose Kryptonian in origin. Thus it's the 1st time in the Timm-Dini continuity that there's a hostile threat from Krypton.

In Blast From the Past, we have 2 dangerous Kryptonian criminals that tried to take over the Earth. It's a forewarning to what Justice Lords Superman would become.

Brave New Metropolis featured a fascist Superman in alliance with Luthor. No doubt Lois would've told Superman and Hamilton about that alternate world.

And finally in Legacy, Superman threatened Hamilton and this was AFTER he recovered from his brainwashing. It was the final straw that broke the camel's back. Up until that moment, Hamilton always believed Superman was a force of good and righteousness. But that moment changed everything.

I'm not justifying what Hamilton did, but if you look at all the events that happened in Superman TAS, could you really blame him? All it takes is 1 bad day like the Justice Lords Superman (executing Flash on live-TV, nearly nuking the world, mocking Superman about how he allowed Luthor to go free) for the DCAU Superman to go rogue.
>>
>>89441826
And you know what the worst thing is? Darkseid won. He didn't conquer Earth, but he ruined Superman's reputation and the trust that he built with humanity.

I've always wondered just how the fuck was he able to regain the world's trust after Legacy? Because by JL's pilot, it seems that most people are okay with him. Though it helps that the impostor Senator Carter probably gave a lot of good PR for Superman so that he could use him as a dupe for the Imperium's conquest.

I've always wished we had a comic or animated movie about what happened between Superman TAS' ending and the premiere of the JL series. I mean, did Clark Kent act any differently since his reputation wasn't ruined but Superman's? Or was he always on edge because he was trying to save the day while getting crap thrown at him and people telling him to "Go back where you came from stinking alien!"

And remember, Superman can hear anything. All those whispers and conversations about how the alien can't be trusted and it's all a trick to lower everyone's guard.

I loved it I'm a bigger Btas but I wasn't a superman fan at all and this made me like the man of steel

That fact it introduced me to a slew of villains that I grew to love from Lex to Mxlpx

Some good memories with this show

Mid-Century Modern. There was nothing retro about the style at the time.
>>
Does it have developed villains like BTAS?
>>
>>89439490

Agree with this. It always irked me that many Superman fans seem to find it wholly unacceptable to reduce Superman's power level somewhat to levels that aid in more dramatic storytelling.

It's not like he has always been a planet busting character, just the most prolific victim if power creep

And a quote that didn't help the situation.
>>
>>89451647
Hamilton can fucking die. Throughout the entire series Superman was a total bro to Hamilton, gave him scientific wonders, and knowledge beyond what human ever had before. Gave him a space ship, took him to the fortress, and even showed him how to make a phantom zone projector. And the one time Superman truly needs him(I don't count when Supes was trapped in the phantom zone because Hamilton/Earth needed Supes) Hamilton refuses cause he's a fucking coward.

Superman wasn't even asking for himself. he was asking for Supergirl WHO HAD DONE NOTHING WRONG. And who was also Hamilton's friend and when Hamilton kicked Supes while he was having literally the worse day of his life Supes lashed out, realized he fucked up, and apologized. And for that Hamilton joined an antisuperhero shadow program and created a clone of Supergirl that tried to kill HER, not Superman, the big scary guy who "put the nerd in the locker", Supergirl, the one who never hurt Hamilton at all.

Fuck Hamilton

Hated how they switched from Michael Dorn to Phil Lamar for JLU. They sounded nothing alike.
>>
>>89452771

Probably just as much as BTAS. Sometimes it even felt that the episodes focused more on the villian (Which for the Luthor episodes really worked out because Lex was amazingly well written)

>>89453565

Dorn had a bigger role as Kalibak in JL and JLU.

>Ironside is an avowed pacifist and doesn't want to play extremely violent characters any more

I think this is probably bullshit. Ironside has turned into a hopeless drunk and probably lost the roles he had due to not being able to stay sober for five minutes. He JUST appeared as a horrible murdering monster in Turbokid a year or two ago, for one thing. And, yes, he was visibly drunk in that as well.
