Creating a planetary defense system to protect your world from both natural and unnatural extinction level events is a very sound move. It becomes even more so if you live in a universe that has multiple hostile alien empires capable of arriving at your planet in only a few days notice and the shield could be the only thing keeping stray shots from ensuing battle from taking out a continent or city. Yes Thor can beat an alien armada, but can Thor stop every single bullet and piece of debris from landing on civilization?

The fact that they know there is an alien empire actually coming to earth after it destroys all the world between them and earth just makes the shield all the more important.

But of course this is Marvel, so creating a planetary defense system is going to be straw manned into keeping muslim refugees out and the people building the shield will be characterized as being worse than Hitler.

You realize that 99% of the human population of earth doesn't have access to space flight, teleporters, or portal technology right? Any force capable of raping the world while the shield is up could also rape the world while the shield isn't up.

Since it is current era Marvel, people will act like the shield being up solves all their problems and all the heroes will go off to fight on the moon or etc and leave earth undefended, but in an intelligently run Marvel organization then it would be an incredibly useful device that could stop multiple threats.
