How long have you been reading Marvel comics? They have been trapped in cycles of shit events leading to shit events ever since the mid 00s.

It's why I quit reading capeshit, even when you have a great run, the editorial mandate will shoehorn in the current even to the story, sometimes so badly that it completely destroys the storyline. It's just not worth reading any of the ongoings, since you know that whatever continuity the run has, will inevitably get fucked over for sure.

How is this even a question at this point? It's been like this for years, and one of the main reasons I'm progressively reading less and less Marvel.

There was a period after Secret Invasion where they were trying to ease off on the big crossover events and do more of a "status quo" branding (Dark Reign = bad guy in charge, Heroic Age = it's OK to be nostalgic again).

They've claimed that this didn't work for them sales wise and after that they've doubled and tripled down on events.

I would like to believe that Civil War II was so obviously crass and stupid that the bad publicity it got them (even among readers/reviewers who used to fellate Marvel) might cause them to rethink, but probably they actually do need these constant events even though they know they're terrible.

I don't buy this because there were a lot of factors going on. The economy was taking a dive starting around early 2008 for starters. And Marvel had been gradually driving away the old audience with Bendis' Avengers, Civil War, OMD, and was starting to drive away their new audience with Ultimatum.

Civil War sold well in TPB form so arguably that was a worthwhile investment by their perspective. But I think it might've did more immediate harm at the time (if you remember after Civil War, Millar took on a bunch of projects, like four or five of them; the only ones that really sold well were Old Man Logan and Kick-Ass.)

And as >>89395850 pointed out, it was Bendis bullshit again after Heroic Age. And what was worse is that reading Post-Siege Bendis Avengers makes you think that he should've bailed after Siege and maybe his run would've slightly held up a bit better. Then again he was intent on doing Age of Ultron as his last Avengers project and that was terrible as fuck.
