True, his first movie was a pulpy WWII adventure movie and while good and campy it didn't really captured the audience's interest and then Whedon did a poor ass job with his character in Avengers.

Then the Russos worked with the First Avenger Cap writers and just channeled Brubaker's run and made his movies into an action espionage movie with some minor sci fi elements with Cap as the underdog and people really responded well to that.

Captain Marvel would need to find her own genre and flavor in order to succeed but so far I haven't heard anything interesting about her movie or the character other than "She's a woman" which doesn't leave me much confidence.

See, if they actually made a good Ghostbusters movie, it wouldn't have mattered if the cast was all female. But they didn't.

If Marvel wants the Captain Marvel movie to be a hit, they have to go back to basics. This means bringing the Kree into a major role in the movies, using some synergy with the TV show to keep the audience familiarized, and maybe tie in the movie with Agents of SHIELD.

Have Mar-Vell appear on the show, give him a scene that ties into the movie, maybe show him saving a space shuttle or fighter plane while being zapped by some energy weapon. Then for the movie, reveal Carol as the pilot and show her recovering from the ordeal and learning to use her abilities as they manifest.

Sure, people say they have no patience for Origin stories, but they need to introduce the character. They can gloss over her rookie phase with a montage if need be, but the point should be to provide an adequate introduction to the character. Give us a few beats to establish who she is, what is important to her, and what that all means in the grand scheme of the Marvel universe. And so long as they don't make her Captain Fascist, I think they have a chance.

This is a tragedy. I would kill for a Lady Sif and the Warriors Three movie! Can you imagine how crazy they could get because they were already established with Thor (Who would be busy avengering, hence why they get their own story). Plus it would be a merchandising goldmine for Disney! They could have Nerf toys for girls and boys!

Ghostbusters was a PR stunt from Sony. They knew it was going to bomb and they needed to throw someone under the bus so they went with old white men thinking that excuse would help them walk away from the failure like it wasn't their fault.
In irony the way they and the media handled it was the elections but in reverse. Rather than play up how awesome and great it is they basically threw a straw man in the middle and just said "All his fault! We can't have nice things because of him!" and much like the elections it didn't go in the favor of what they were hoping and they just embarrassed themselves in attempts to pull the wool over the public.
