I recently rewatched the whole series. A lot of the humor does not fall in the edge or the self references but more on the subtle stuff. The quick jabs they make in the dialogue the background jokes. In an episode they had Micky Mouse show up but I assume for copyright reasons they could not directly confirm it was him. So in one sentence they bleep Micky but say mouse and in the next sentence they say Micky but bleep Mouse. During one of the clip shows they showed a clip from the veggie tales episode where the cucumber starts shooting everyone. In the corner they put it was originally filmed on April 20th 1999, which is columbine.
