Michael Ende is just a legend in Germany and everybody knows his stories. Without having watched the Augsburgerpuppenkiste, listening to their cassettes, or reading the books this cartoon is probably half as good, because in the end it was a try to give these stories a newer version.
Same with Wunschpunsch and all the others.

I know of Jim Button, it showed on the Dutch FOX Kids in the 90s.
