Hey, Homestuck might be bad but the porn still flows freely.
You can't tell me you aren't interesting in Jade trying to sleep in the wrong bed, forcing Dave to shove his hand down her pants in the middle of a crowd, or going full tribal on a cashier when they ring a bell too loud.

Or you can set it as a more period piece.

there isn't one but there are lots of assumptions that the clockguy is a dude who is an extraction of pure negative energy (sound familiar?) crossed over with another guy

said negativity guy looks like the main protagonist for maximum POETRY so if it ends up him being the mastermind it would be pretty funny

I recommend the series if you like convoluted bullshit like Homestuck and they even recently added timetravel

>>
>>89276576
i wish this was exaggerated but god they do care about their transdemihumanheadcanons.
>>
>>89286223
Archive reader is definitely the best way to read homestuck, since it went to shit with hiatuses. You missed out on now reading problem sleuth as it was being released though.
>>
>>89276877
I had a terrible idea for a fic that won't leave me the fuck alone where Jade starts going a bit more feral after a few years/centuries as a goddess. Kind of got inspired by the John bummer ending and thinking how desperate for human contact both Prospit twins'd be after some god time ditched by their friends.
>>
>>89286223
Same
>Be me in 2009
>All my internet friends are into Homestuck
>Check it out, quickly give up on it
>2013
>Replay Paper Mario 2, look for fangames, find a fanadventure
>Read Problem Sleuh, read Homestuck
>Get caught up and be batshit about the comic for a few months
>Gigapause hits
>Fandom slowly falls apart, internet friends are no longer fans
>Spend months wishing I'd read it years earlier
>Comic resumes
>Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
>Suddenly, horribly noticeable quality drop
>THE END, FUCK YOU
>Rage takes months to subside, still isn't entirely gone
And now I'm really thankful I didn't get into it in 2009
I'd have probably killed myself over the ending or something.

Meh.

I enjoyed the ride. There's a lot of reasons to 'regret putting time into it'. But even knowing all of that, I don't regret reading it to the end as a non-archival reader. But I definitely agree that the hiatuses were just murder. Here's hoping for the epilogue to shed some light on bit of glaring points aforementioned.
>>
>>89286518
>batshit about the comic for a few months
So, what drew you in about it if not the interactive part? Was it the characters, Hussie's writing, the worldbuilding or what?

The ending was absolutely terrible. The complete lack of resolution was a blow to us, make no mistake.

But we'd be sad even if the ending had been good. We'd be sad because the ride would finally be over, and we'll never know the joys of such an active, interactive, constantly-updating story with endless, fresh fan content and discussion again. Because there was only one man who could completely devote himself to a comic like that. And not even he was able to keep that up all the way through.

Homestuck wasn't just the comic. Homestuck was the experience, and you had to be there to get it. You can read the comic now, but you can never experience Homestuck if you hadn't done so when it was alive.

>>89286785
Pretty much all those things. It was a huge complex story where anything could happen and every time you would wonder how you didn't see it coming. It was full of colorful concepts I liked (Jumanji: the RPG, alchemy, chessboard armies, player planets, cloud visions and squid terrors). And it was the first time I really got emotionally attached to characters in a work. I really loved the interactions and how every member of the cast was memorable. Also, the symbolism and plot theorizing, that was fun.

>>89287659
Yeah, you dodged a bullet here

I remain firm in my predictions: wherever people are getting "January 2017" from is going to be changed to just "2017" with no official announcement. Then angry people are going to tweet at the Upper Echelon of Chucklefucks in of understandable anger. Cohen will not respond. Andrew will reply to a random complaint of the lot with no words and a choppy gif of a horse shrugging. Piggy will make a tweet in her and Andrew's patented format of pretentious lowercase, saying they need more time to "make everyone gayer."

The odds of anything else happening are about as likely as the Cubs winning the World Series.

Andrew Hussie is a self-loathing betacuck numale whose been emotionally castrated by Halftruth and literally castrated by IPGD. All of his friends and employees are SJWs who demonize men and it comes through in his writing of all male Homestuck characters been wimpy and emotionally broken and the female characters as strong independent women who don't need no man.

Look at the views for the final videos on youtube. they're ~1 million for collide and below 500K for the other 2. No one came back and stayed after the shitshow of an ending. there is no market for this game. the only way its getting made is through Toby Fox personally funding it. Like. Thats the only explanation I can think of.

And they still have 3/4 more "acts" to release before game 2 when they might make money.

My attempts at a homestuck-inspired novel have hit a roadblock due to the fact that I can't get the time travel mechanic to work consistently

Imagine a version of homestuck where time travel is only possible by moving through the furthest ring, meaning only stable time loops are possible, but terezi is also there and still has her "synaptic causality" ability.

If there's only one future then what good is her power? If there are many futures then if you take the reverse path then which timeline are you going to when you move to the future?

>It updates pretty slowly
This is why webcomics as a medium have failed. Only Hussie could update a webcomic almost every day in its prime, and multiple times per day, at that. This is not a criticism of other webcomic creators; that is by no means reasonable to expect of anyone. This also means that virtually nobody can keep a webcomic updated regularly enough to nourish a huge following over the many, many years it will take for the story to get going anywhere. There's a reason all the other most acclaimed ones that update regularly and reliably are basically online newspaper gag strips. Using it as a medium to tell a story just isn't going to work, no matter how good the art, characters, and plot are, if you can't sustain interest with constant content. Ava's Demon is dying because the author just can't handle the workload she's forced on herself, Lackadaisy is almost forgotten because it updates once a year, and so on.
>>
>>89298805
I caught up in March of 2013. Like about 20 days before the Megapause and I don't think I even knew about HSG until after the pause ended.

>If there's only one future then what good is her power?
What do you mean? If there is only one future probability theory still applies. You can still say some events are more likely to occur than others. You can still imagine the branches of the future, even if they don't turn out to be true. You can make predictions about human brains, obviously.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that webcomics have failed, I kind of agree with you that it's a fundamental flaw of the medium. It's a problem with all serialized or episodic media, but worse for webcomics for some reason. (Is it just that art is harder to do than writing as Hussie once alleged? You tell me. My impression is that serialized fiction with a nontrivial number of followers does completed more often. It also gets ridiculously long for archive readers. )

It's a tough problem. You could hack around it by basically working in another medium, i.e., writing and drawing your entire webcomic ahead of time like a traditional graphic novel and then publishing it bit by bit, but then you wouldn't be able to do the reader input thing. As a compromise you could prewrite X month long installments, but that reintroduces the possibility of stagnation into the process.
>>
>>89299175
That list doesn't contain anything!

No, but seriously. I don't think there are really any good ships at all, especially when Cohen is writing it. Hell, Hussie wasn't really even that good at making any sort of good dialogue of that type.

>Is it just that art is harder to do than writing as Hussie once alleged?
I think the problem is that webcomic artists are trying to imitate printed works. They need to change the process and accept a lower quality output in order to compete with serialized media that has entire teams of people behind it. Basically you have to draw your characters as stick figures or copy-paste art (sprite comics) just to get through the story you want to tell at a reasonable speed.

Art is harder than writing in the sense that it takes more time to draw the sequence than to write it.

This is very likely true. Unfortunately, it's at odds with a goal that many webcomic artists seem that have, namely to learn to art. Implicit in that goal is learning to be as good as their traditional media inspirations.
>Basically you have to draw your characters as stick figures or copy-paste art (sprite comics)
Or learn 3D. Not enough ambitious webcomics have tried to do 3D. Or use skeletal 2D vector characters like lots of Flash cartoons and games like Aquaria. You'll only have to make each art asset once. Or be rich and hire artists to keep up with your writing. (If you can deliver on the writing.)

Stuff to consider if you like(d) Homestuck.

If you're a pleb who likes flashy visuals, music, and inch deep meta nonsense - Undertale. Y'all have probably played it, but it's competently made and exists, unlike Hiveswap. Like Hiveswap, it also have music by Toby Fox

If you liked the gradual but deliberate build up and obscure plot points from like two years ago coming back up to bite the reader in the ass - Boku no Hero Academia. Karkatfags in particular will like the love interest girl since her role as "cute moe love interest who says MC's name a lot" is mercilessly examined, ripped apart, and fucked with, all while small but consistent details suggest she might be a huge problem for everyone despite being fundamentally a good person.

If you like Sci-Fi that isn't just an excuse for weird gender prounouns and /d/ body suit tier sex... well you're SOL. I'd say Star Citizen but let's face it that's never coming out. Hitchiker's Guide is an option but it's pure silliness that just happens to also be vivid Sci-Fi. You can consider Foundation and other Asimov stuff but let's face it if you truly liked Asimov you wouldn't be reading a webcomic about trolls.

If you liked Murderstuck, then Ava's Demon. I'd have said Unsounded a while back but that got boring edgy, not fun edgy. Much like Hussie, the illustrator is a pillhead, so quality varies. Still good tho.

If you like shipping and fat people, then, uh, Steven Universe I guess. Why do you like shipping? What is wrong with you? Lesbians are boring.

If you like Old Huss's humor - well Hitchhiker's guide is the best you're gonna get. Old Huss was truly a loss for us all, RIP formspring.

There's always going to be some sort of media for non-interactive entertainment. Sometimes people just want to relax and be entertained rather than needing to be constantly involved in their own entertainment like what video games demand. I mean, sometimes I just want to relax and let someone else be a hero and watch *their* adventures, not just the adventures in videogames where I take the place as the hero.

You're thinking too much about the mechanics of a bullshit pretend thing.

Think about what good time travel does to the characters. For Dave it let him be the guy to fix his mistakes and look super cool and be super important like he always wanted and then he realized the downside, which is horror and responsibility and a duty to reality itself. Time travel is important to Aradia because it influences the fatalism that controls her for her entire existence; we later find out that there WERE ways she could have rebelled against the control of Paradox Space, but the Maid of Time had some comfort in being at the whims of fate.

How a superpower effects your character is WAY more important than making it sound clever. That's one thing you should learn from Homestuck because it did it really well at first and then fucking forgot because writing is hard lets get other artists to make pictures for me.

If you like time travel shenanigans being forced on a bunch of losers, try out the VN Stein's Gate.

It deals a lot with the mechanics of time travel, some internet nerds being in over their heads, twists, mysteries, etc. The characters mostly end up being very believable and likable as their development is usually spot on, the plot is engaging, time travel is well thought out, and it only SORT of shits the bed at the ending. It even has a non-CIS character that isn't fucking awful, if you can believe it.

The only downsides are having to deal with a certain level of ANIME, and a main character that spends the first half of the game being a cringeworthy fuck before getting his shit together.
>>
>>89303354
Fuck you Guy-Who-Wrote-Looper, the rules do matter. Being consistent with your world rules is what grounds the story and gives the character's actions meaning.

A great comparison to draw is action scenes, and the movie Die Hard. The reason Die Hard's action scenes are some of the best ever made, despite not being very flashy, amazingly choreographed, or having notably great effects, is because it's grounded in a set of rules. When John gets glass in his feat, he limps for the rest of the movie. When his arm gets banged up, he stops using that arm. There's an effect to every action, and there are real stakes. The world maintains a consistent set of rules, and the protagonist needs to react and deal with those rules, and that's why the events of the movie even matter.

Yeah, the "villain" just kind of comes out of nowhere and is pretty weak, and the scene that compels the protagonist to get into the thing to go to the place is really stilted and weird.

MHA I think shows how Homestuck could have worked just fine if it was just, like, a BIT sincere?

MHA uses "shipping" as misdirection, but its always very purposeful misdirection that gives you more insight into the character once you realize what's ACTUALLY going on. Meanwhile Homestuck is content to basically just say DUDE SHIPPING IS DUMB AND DIMINISHES THE CHARACTERS LMAO, but never does much to show the characters having any depth outside of shipping.

And then ironically reduces Karkat, Dave, Rose, and Kanaya to shells themselves purely because of shipping - but I guess shipping doesn't count when it's gay?

Power wise it's likely pretty standard, but considering it's destiny would be to destroy doom, it's basically built to win the game as long as the player doesn't fuck it up.

Posting this here because it's the only Homestuck thread around, and stop me if I'm being cancer, but why does Dirk Strider's wallpaper look so much like Underswap Sans and Papyrus when Undertale itself wasn't even out? I mean, it could be explained if they looked unswapped, as Toby Fox made songs for Homestuck and Hussie may have been privy to Undertale's development, but they're Underswap, which had to be created by fans after Undertale's release. Is this just coincidence? Am I just seeing things because I've spent way too much time in the Homestuck and Undertale trash cans?
>>

>Being consistent with your world rules is what grounds the story and gives the character's actions meaning.
This right here. You can break the rules, sure, but you better have a damn good reason each time you do it if your target audience is even modestly intelligent and mildly nerdy. Otherwise it will leave the audience somewhere between unsatisfied and infuriated, depending on the severity what you did.

the very idea, let alone the blunt way it is said that John brutally murders AND THEN rapes March Eri is fucking hilarious.
Eridan: and my sister fared evven wworse
Eridan: the bastard killed her
Eridan: and had his wway wwith her
made even better by the fact that the listening john barely reacted to hearing one of the worst things that has ever been said to him
meanwhile he throws a tantrum when someone dares to draw his friends in an unflattering light.

I choose to believe that john, being an incredibly sheltered child with a 1950's dad, and being cut off from almost all human culture, experiences, and history since he was 13, does not understand the connotations of "had his wway wwith her"

he probably wouldn't even know where babies came from unless dave or rose told him, or he looked it up on the internet.

>but there is nothing more annoying than the worthless younger sibling who causes endless amounts of trouble
So she doesn't cause endless amounts of trouble. She should exist as a way to contextualize the actions of the other characters. Nepeta's thing was that she was heavily invested in the emotional lives of her friends (either superficially or more deeply depending on who it was), and was a strange mix of innocent and violent. So work with that. What is there in your sci-fi world that might cause someone to view it in terms of this altered, shippy reality? Is there any character who could slot themselves into altered reality as a result of something they experience? How violent/morally grey are your characters? Since she was in the middle of the spectrum, you could put her on either side of your protagonists, showing another path they could have taken but chose not to for one reason or another. Maybe instead you lean into the moirail angle and make her a mediating presence that keeps team friction down, or go the opposite and have her be a burden that another character is beholden to which causes conflict.

I think you're right on that part. She won't be useless if I make her useful. I was already planning on giving her super strength among a group of people who were pretty much below average.

I know her arc too. A lot of who she is runs on her being unsure whether she wants to be a cat or a human in a scenario in which she has a choice. It's just that I can't force myself to think about her personality, her desires, her identity. She's just the idea of nepeta, not even the real character
>>
>>89328067
>She's just the idea of nepeta, not even the real character
Well of course. There was no "the real character" of Nepeta in the end because Hussie actively chose to not bother fleshing her out or developing her. Writing about the real Nepeta is a bit like trying to write about the real post-Act 6 Karkat. There's nothing there to write about. Instead, write about the character Nepeta could have been, if she was allowed to be a character.

Terezi and Eridan were fucked in the head and had little in the way of super powers, Tavros... come the fuck on... Vriska maybe. If her mind control didn't work she would be useless and she seems thoroughly messed up.

Aradia on the other hand was a bit too normal, even with her manic and depressive sides

This was already addressed, but it keeps happening anyway. It as if people really do try to shut down discussions by bringing up simple soundbites as if they invalidated all possible complexities and nuances of whatever issue they're trying to "win".

They're probably mad about being called out, but that doesn't give them any more of an argument.
>>
>>89321476
That's because he focused on nothing but the "lesbians" part of "alien lesbian characters".

>>89321992
Yeah, it really isn't.

>"It's implied these 2 guys might have dated at some point, maybe they still do, who knows"
>"Have some lesbians, they kiss once and mostly hang out in the background until I get my art team to draw them marrying"
Hussie is appealing to an audience that's so starved for representation, he can (and does) hint at it in the most obscure and deniable of ways and depict it as lazily as possible, they'll blow it out of proportion and into enormous steps forward.
It's just progressive enough for him to get their money without making himself uncomfortable drawing black people or gay romance.
>>
>>89330781
Nor does setting up a straw man to argue with give *you* any more of an argument. Only fanatics and idiots won't elaborate on their arguments if you ask them to do so.

Considering that it was an empire, do you really consider that much could occur with out the leader saying so?
>>
>>89330975
It's not a strawman, it's literally what I was directly responding to. Unless they would have admitted the possibility that a society being led by a woman doesn't completely and absolutely rule out the possibility that females could be discriminated against in some way, but considering their previous posts, that's rather unlikely.

Repeating "MATRIARCHY" is not what they said at all. They were trying to make the point that it's unlikely that HIC allowed society to function anyway other than what she would see fit.

>>
>>89330434
Yeah but troll society's pretty heavily set up as a mild matriarchy with most of a focus on "whoever can take something owns it". Throwing that out of the window for some muh patriarchy points undermines the shitload of worldbuilding and focus on the trolls HE DERAILED THE PARTS OF THE COMIC I LIKED FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Like troll society's fucked up, mind control's how you say "I love you.", murder and kidnapping are societal approved actions, relationships are designed to fall apart so that actual bonds that could conceivably challenge the government never REALLY form. But if it was supposed to be patriarchal it should've been established as such in the month long digression that turned into half a year of fucking the comic up.

Furthermore people go "MATRIARCHY" because its really the kind of monarchy that's focused on making the monarch utterly indispensable. HIC protects herself from usurpation not just through power but by making her an essential part of how everything functions-the universe DOES revolve around her.

Jesus you're like this girl I used to write with who'd freak out whenever I'd write Jade the least bit savvy or aware despite the comic showing she wasn't a total cipher because she wanted Dave to be her society barometer for everything. "That means they can't conflict, there's no comedy." "but people raised aloneeeeeeeeeeeee! also she and john should be half-siblings in public lets focus on that less." all the fucking time.

The sad thing is that sometimes I like it when a story has a timejump and then a relationship you didn't expect ended up being what happened instead of what you assumed.

The problem is that Hussie trying to do both of those things at once was a disaster. And then suddenly getting super shy about it and going back on it later made it even dumber which is amazing.

Carapace sex is way different than human sex, Jade probably knows how to handle a hemipenis or expose internal genitalia, not how to be human-attractive.
>>
>>89333045
Honestly? Like, shipping goggles off here.

They spent a LOT of the comic building up his friendship/crush on Jade. Having it just dropped because he's suddenly gay because that's the end result of realizing that he doesn't have to be the sort of man his brother was isn't just bad writing from a relationship standpoint, its insulting. Just going, "sry girl i spent 80% of the comic adoring i'm gay now because meteor Stockholm syndrome" is lazy and it was a big enough part of the comic that you gotta have that shit happen on screen.

You want to write about Dave discovering what kind of man, what kind of knight he wants to be? Awesome. That is what the character needs and the one fanfic this uber-popular guy never really seems to get because everyone seems to want to write his demeanor or just the painful shit instead of him resolving them into a stronger person.

But man John coming home from the wars and expecting his best friend and getting a rant about how toxic masculinity is...there's a reason that scene's cringeworthy. Not just because it's badly written, but because it isn't DAVE. Dave's established from day one as a man who has a ton of love and energy that he gives to the wrong people and instead of "Okay, I've found the RIGHT people and cause, finally.", we get, "Well I don't want to be my brother so I must want to be this.", which doesn't really feel like progress does it. It read to me like Dave just finding something ELSE to cling to because God forbid he just be Dave.

Also its post Act 6 Karkat so what's the fucking point.

>>89333137
I kind of like to ship Dave with Tavros, because Tavros is so completely honest and raw in the way he expresses himself. He doesn't disguise his feelings, everything his brain comes up with goes directly through his mouth with minimal filtering.
That's what makes him hilarious and embarrassing, but he's also one of the most well-adjusted characters in the comic. Which is incredible considering Vriska's destructive bullying and how she wanted him to put on the same kind of emotionless jerk persona she has.
I feel like Dave would eventually learn to keep his mask down and let himself be a dork after spending enough time with Tavros. I don't see him learning to do so with Karkat, he's clearly got the same problem and he's even more of a mess when he's not pretending to be the tough leader guy.

The one guy who was abused and not only turned out fine, but actually improved as a person and didn't cave in to self-doubt (hello, Dave and Karkat) is well-adjusted.
It's subjective but you got to admit I'm not pulling that interpretation out of my ass here.
>>
>>89334278
No, its him giving into a part of the fandom and what they wanted Dave to be.

Also way to fly right over my fucking point. It wasn't "shipping", it was "handling Dave's act 3 wrong and dumping a huge relationship he had with another character for good boy points from the fujos.".

You can fan ship whoever the fuck you want, that wasn't my fucking point. Dave and Tavros probably should've had more interactions than they did but he needed to be Vriska's victim, fail to do anything but be Vriska's victim, and then die.

Hey sort of like the comic.

Fair enough. Generally I think any human/troll ships should be doomed because troll romance is way better as something humans are tempted by but incompatible with; they're nice, safe little compartments that are way easier to deal with than how complicated and troublesome our relationships are. But ultimately empty tools of an evil government designed to propagate a complicated reproduction process and keep a population of psychotic killers primed and ready for expansion and conquest.

The earlier point is why its so popular with the kids, btw. Besides having cool names and symbols its so much EASIER to have a rigid definition of a relationship instead of something as scary as actual human interaction. Same reason kids this generation fucking love fantasy caste systems in YA novels, it gives them the fantasy of a societal safety net that's been cut out from under them by a generation that won't admit that their kids have no fucking clue how to transition to adulthood and are sacred out of their minds.

Capitalism, as always, obliges.

Dave wasn't changed into an abuse victim at the last second. He was always like that. This is shown pretty clearly as early as him walking around the house and confronting his brother, which is noticeably very different from the scenes where John and Rose confront their own guardians. It also shows through in a lot of the conversations Dave had where he talked about his brother, like when he mentioned that Bro would sometimes attack him in the middle of the night when he was going to the bathroom. Or when he was oddly ambivalent to his death.

You could say that Bro was just training him to be strong, and that probably was his motive, but that doesn't change the effect it has on a child. Bro was always meant to be an abusive guardian.

I've never seen anything as COMFY, SIMPLE and VARIED as these simple silk garbs.

All of the kids had Real Shit under the comedy, yeah, even John. Generally fans take the Derse kids as being more serious and pained because-well there are a lot of reasons.

My issue isn't "Dave confronting how he was raised." but the method it was handled in, which read a lot like a shitload of first era fanfics which were all about Dave weeping instead of Dave being a fucking knight and accepting and moving through his shit to become a better man for it.

He had less than zero self-esteem. He was timid to the point of severe neuroses. He constantly tried to escape reality into fantasy. He gave zero consideration to others.

He managed to eventually learn some things he liked about himself and try to help others, but that's about it. All of the Betas, Karkat, Kanaya, Roxy, Jane, and maybe Dirk by the end, are all better adjusted people, even with all of their backslides and unresolved issues.

I dunno I thought a lot of the god tier outfits were pretty lazy. The lacked the personalized flair of the earlier stuff which would've made sense at first, as the new god changes from a person to an archetype, but then it doesn't change at ALL as the new god transforms into their own form of deity. It also marked the end of fashion as anything but a race for Homestuck and like...maybe the Witch and Seer outfits were really any good?

Dave's arc was never about Bro being abusive and damaging Dave, it was about Bro being weird shit head and a horrible role model. It wasn't about Dave overcoming trauma, it was about him finding self worth and choosing what sort of person he wanted to become.

That was Dave's problem, though. His upbringing left him broken inside, but he hid it behind the persona of an invincible badass ninja warrior who was too stoic to be affected by his emotions, because that's what his definition of "cool" was. An important part of his character development was to stop suppressing his problems and get in touch with his real emotions so he could work through them.

All the Knights did this sort of thing; they had a sort of social "armor" built up around their true selves, projecting an awesome badass image to the rest of the world but having a mess of issues underneath.

Also, Dave did get through his problems and become a better man for it. After he accepts that he doesn't have to be an untouchable master of irony all the time, he has a good talk about his issues, comes to terms with himself, goes back to being a badass roof ninja when it REALLY counts, and then goes on to live a happy life with his friends. Airing out his feelings was an important part of the healing process, and it's exactly what helped him become a better man.

You've read too many fanfics. Dave was insecure, not broken. He didn't hide behind his persona, he was raised by a weird puppet fetishist a didn't know to genuinely connect with people. And none of it was because he wanted to be manly, he wanted to be Bro.

What bugs the shit out of me that there was an unacknowledged tonal shift between john and rose attacking dad and mom. when it's dave and bro's fights that are treated as being non-comedic.

this comic was always tonally schizophrenic and Andrew at the tail end, acting like it wasn't made the whole situation worse.

dave/jade is terrible
so is nepeta and kanaya
kill yourselves

Remember when Rose threatened to commit suicide, or when John actually attacked his dad with a hammer? But let's just sweep all that under the rug, along with everything else from Act 1-4.

There wasn't any sudden retroactive shift with how they were handled. They were clearly different from the time they happened.

>This is shown pretty clearly as early as him walking around the house and confronting his brother, which is noticeably very different from the scenes where John and Rose confront their own guardians.
All of the scenes where the kids avoid their guardians have an uneasy, vaguely horror-esque vibe to them, the only difference being escalation.

John - Creepy man who likes clowns a little too much
Rose - Drunken mad scientist
Dave - Flashstepping ninja who likes puppets a little too much
Jade - Literal hellbeast

Andrew Hussie wasn't setting up these high-tension scenarios because he wanted to talk about PTSD later on. He did it because it was *funny*.

John avoided his Dad because of his annoying love of clowns and because he was making too much birthday cake. He was annoyingly overbearing with his affections.

Rose didn't like her Mom because she thought her affections were some sort of passive-aggressive game.

Jade's dog played a game of fetch with her.

Dave's Bro forced him into a fight even when he tried to run away.

There's a noticeable difference here.

I said the difference was clear, not that it was physically impossible to pretend it's not there.

but the comic does just that

You're intentionally talking around the core elements of John and Rose's bits that hold parallel to the reason you're claiming that Dave was abused.

When you weigh each of them equally the only thing it shows unique to Dave is that Bro is a shitty guardian.

I could never accept bro as abusive just because just about every action we see him take is selfless
