That Hawkman, is Katar Hol. An alien from the planet Thanagar. He came into contact with a rare, seemingly mystic living metal known as Nth Metal. It bonded itself to Katar. A Thangarian high authority wanted the Nth metal for himself and framed Katar for murder.

Katar fled to Earth, and hid under the Earth identity Carter Hall, hoping he would have the opportunity to clear his name later.
