Be respectful.
That man is a legendary furfag.

/a/ likes Dezaki, but he's anime, not manga
>>
>>89265142
honestly that applies to most Manga from before the 80's, they tend to be rather hard to read by modern standards, even ones by really good creators
>>
>>89265646
this one's funnier read left to right
>>
>>89266086
The trajectory of the series really fits the way rise and fall is such a constant theme. Generally trend upward, then plummet for Nostalgia, then slowly climb back up toward Sun.

>>89264963
Japanese Stallone?
>>
I'm going to use this thread to ask because /a/ doesn't know jackshit. Are there any good old adventure cartoons like Astro boy that you guys would recommend? I recently finished watching all the episodes and I'm sad because almost half of the original episodes weren't translated from Japanese.

The only other Tezuka show from this era I know of is Wonder 3, which is also excellent, but sadly very few episodes have English subs.
>>
>>89266668
you might like getter robo, space pirate captain harlock, or lupin the 3rd

I've only read Dororo and a bit of Astro Boy.

>>89266668

From the 60s? Tomorrow's Joe, aka Ashita no Joe. It basically is THE sports manga/anime (it's about boxing). The 70s gives you a lot more options though.
>>
>>89264963
The guy who started (or at the very least popularized) an entire industry in Japan because he was a fanboy of Disney Comics?

I might have heard of him.

Rose of the Versailles, Daitarn 3, Mazinger Z since now the whole thing has been officially subbed, and some other stuff. The original Gundam is technically 70s as it started in 79.

I love Mazinger because it's in my spic blood to, but that show is a fucking chore sometimes. Remember when in futurama Fry described Star Trek TOS as "79 episodes, about...30 good ones?" That's Mazinger, except it was 92 episodes.

Fucking amazing finale though.

Yup. He's one of my inspirations.
>>
>>89269898
Nah, Tezuka was his contemporary. They lived in the same apartment block for a while but they both were stylistically very different authors of different generations. Both were enormously influential on thier medium, Tezuka was more invovled with animation where Ishinomori had a successful career producing television shows based on his concepts and comics. Tezuka famously commented regretfully on one occasion where Ishinomori produced a comic so good he went out of his way to publicly trash it out of pure jealousy.

He was a Walt Disney fanboy. They met later on and became friends.

While Japan had comics authors before him, and would have had more without him; he got the ball in motion through productivity and versatility.

As far as I understand it, he penned 160K pages during his career.
>>
>>89265142
I completely disagree, Astro Boy is great. Maybe it's because I wasn't expecting it to be as dark and depressing as it was, but at its best it's GOAT. There are a few terrible stories here and there, but overall it's my favorite Manga.

>>89267899
Tezuka went bankrupt like three times. If he wasn't working a wage-slave plan at the start of his career, he sure ended up with it a few times. Cut the frills, do what you have to, the path of the lowest bidder gets to keep going when the rest have fallen. Tezuka was a greater producer of adventure and inspiration than the bland cape comics have been in decades. Unfortunate, really. But Tezuka's stuff keeps taking a step forward without consequences to the story. Like the post with the room full of dead kids, or even half the crazy stuff done in Black Jack, whereas DC can't even break a villain's neck properly. With multiple attempts at the idea.
>>
>>89267250
Black Jack is explicitly not a moral beacon.
He's a back-alley doctor who charges extreme fees in order to fund a spiteful revenge scheme.
The fact that he also happens to do the right thing a lot of the time is irrelevant.
>>
>>89264963
Black Jack's my fav. Swallowing the Earth is also high on the list.
But goddamn, some of his stuff gets really dark with sad endings.
I wish I could churn out as much as he can. The guy was a powerhouse!
>>
>>89275961
No, it was the 60's, 70's. (BJ first published in 1973) There was that whole journey of redemption thing, that whole man stands alone vibe. It's a good life if you don't weaken. Ever seen the Incredible Hulk live action series? You stand alone, with resolve, and your fortitude isn't your muscle strength, it's your moral strength. Black Jack just wanted people to value people more than people were valuing money. So bill them for all their money and they'll start working for life, and valuing life, rather than working for money and valuing money. Break the cycle of thinking that money is what is worth living for. It's the people you love that should be all you need. The past had a different way of thinking then the present, but they (Tezuka and Black Jack in this case) were right anyway.

The English dub that ran in the states in the 60s only ran for 104 episodes, but there were almost 90 episodes that went untranslated for various reasons often pertaining to the content (usually stupid shit like the portrayal of violence against animals).
