Margret wasn't at the 25 years reunion because it never stopped being weird despite how many times Mordecai insisted the past was in the past and they'd all moved on. He keeps bringing up how terrible he used to be and how aware he is now about it and how they can all laugh about it because it's all in the past and they've all grown up so much and moved on, all with this terrible undercurrent of desperation where he needs to hear that it's true. Even though they both have families and only see each other once every few years, Margret is always left with the unsettling feeling that she could ask him to run away together and he'd drop everything at a moment's notice to be with her again.

She still sees Eileen and Rigby when they're in town. She likes to reminisce with Eileen about the carefree days, and Rigby's gotten tactful enough not to mention Mordecai while they do, or mention to Mordecai afterward that they'd met up.

It's embarrassing because Margret was literally made for Mordecai, she was such a flat, empty character who only existed to be his love interest that they never really managed to graft a personality on.

I'm convinced Quintel had really intended him and Margret to end up together from the start and only changed track after the love triangle season was such an unpopular trainwreck. He painted himself into a corner where putting them together in the end would be downright embarrassing writing and he'd catch a bunch of flak, and meeting batgirl in the ending montage because "actually, you can date a lot of people in your life, and even if you get caught up thinking they're The One you can find love later" is a passable message.

They basically had to salvage the show by making Mordecai foreveralone and making Rigby the new star. They didn't even bring Margret to space since once they abandoned Operation Bird Love Story she had no purpose. It was the biggest admission of her not being a character of all.
