What went wrong?

Wasn't bad, wasn't perfect either, but still an enjoyable action show

Certainly one of the top action shows of the modern era

Unicron was dumb. And somehow an earthbender.

They ruined Starscream's character.

This. Incredibly drab and boring. Tried to be a more "mature" take on the series, but ended up falling flat on it's face because it was all buildup with no payoff or moments rest between episodes. Beastwars and Animated hit that balance very well, but Prime seemed to forget that G1 was full of goofy shit like Prime playing basketball.
Either Bumblebee needed to talk, or they needed to add Smokescreen much earlier, but either way I lost interest long before the series ended.

Also, what they did to Wheeljack was unforgivable.

I am an Armada fan, but that's irrelevant here. Starscream started off really badass in the series before they started turning him into a joke in Season 2 and beyond.

And just because G1 Starscream was pathetic doesn't mean all Starscreams have to be like him.

Season 2 was too much of a scavenger hunt, and season 3 suffered from behind the scenes Hell.

It's portraying him as he has been traditionally known.....he's not exactly a weakling hence often being a leader of some team or having a place of power, but he's ultimately a sniveling bitch who gets beaten into submission by his superiors

When he turned loyal in Prime he was still being shit on. It was just depressing by the end.

It's been nearyl four years since it finished and I can still remember a lot about it. The show had good character beats and the plot was interesting enough but very few things concluded satisfactory

From the start they wanted to shove every TF trope into the series and as quick as possible while not caring about the quality of the writing.

Also, there was no clear sense of direction in the story. They presented us with multiple potential story arcs only to abandon them pretty much immediately (Breakdown having a past w/ Bulkhead and possibly defecting, C.Y.L.A.S., Dreadwing, Starscream building an army of seekers, etc.). All of which were pretty much useless and served absolutely no purpose in the story whatsoever.

Dreadwing and Breakdown were some of the most interesting characters we'd seen in TFs in awhile. Imagine if they were never in the show at all. It would've been that much more boring because Starscream would've been the only Decepticon to question Megatron's authority. Otherwise it would've been the same old "good guys vs. bad guys" shit we've seen since G1. It's refreshing to see characters like Dinobot and Dreadwing, and it was a punch in the gut for him to get wasted like he was a C-lister who should've been an A-lister.

It baffles me when TFP fans make excuses for this poor writing. It'd be looked at as poor writing in ANY other show, but for some reason TFP fans defend it because "well TFs has always been boring and stiff so its all good if the writers want to kill off characters who could potentially make it more interesting. Its just a kids show based on toys after all." Like, what? So you're admitting to willingly not judging it with a critical lens? Okay? Good for you to have shitty taste?

It's not that it isn't poor writing, it's that the show was still entertaining despite that....most action shows have poor writing

I liked Prime a lot, but the show definitely had some issues.

>Not enough Transformer characters for how long the show was, making multiple episodes feel like repeats
>Show had some extremely dull points (mostly season 2) where it felt like nothing was happening
>Optimus Prime would contradict himself frequently based on the episode's writer. Also, OP in general felt a bit too serious, taking away some of the charisma and father-figure-sequel appeal of the character
