Tony went nuts and turned Alcatraz into his personal pleasure palace after filling San Fransisco's waster supply with the Extremis Virus. All of which Pepper was not down for, obviously.
As for "How Tony stopped being crazy?" well, I personally believe he never stopped. And that's why he put on a giant replica of Rhodey's armor and got into a drunken brawl with Captain Marvel that left him a vegetable. Good night everybody.

Riri isn't really bad so far, but her story still leaves me completely uninterested.

Tony's original point was that he brought his misfortune onto himself. His weapon mongering caused injury, and Iron Man was a way to partly redeem himself for all the other injures his inventions caused.

Riri's friend was just a random victim. That doesn't make it less tragic, but I'm struggling to see how it factors into her story as Iron Man. Apart from the generic brooding factor, I mean.
