However, Beast Wars comes at a close second.....and I'm also fond of Disney's Gargoyle's , Batman TAS, Transformers G1, and Jem

Gravity Falls was pretty good too but I need more time to consider it a favorite

See, maybe this is where I differ from some fans....I never found the changelings, or Chrysalis to be interesting, they were one note vampires who had no motivation or character other than being parasites IMO, so desu while I don't know if they way they went with them is the BEST, or how I would have personally done it, I also don't think it hurts at all since I've thought they were one note and disposable, no headcanons involved

That's kind of the thing, though. A parasite is an animal, operating on instinct to survive. Making them sapient, and giving them that base nature to grapple with, is what makes them interesting.

S6 teased at that idea with Thorax, albeit clumsily, before using him as a vehicle to throw it all out the window.

It's funny, because even Faust explained that they don't fill in those blanks until they need them. They didn't figure out Rarity's parents or Ponk's family until it was necessary for the episode, either, and that was still while she was in charge of the show.

I'm... not sure which part of it you're suggesting was a retcon, because none of them had names back then. We saw Limestone and Marble in flashbacks in S1, but they weren't given names until one of the chapter books that came out between S3 and S4. Maud was later introduced in S4 -- first in a photograph, and then later in the season in an episode about her.

The problem is that people spend so much time on unofficial shit, building up their headcanons about the characters, that any major addition feels like it came way too late -- and after first impressions are already said and done. But that's your fault, not the writers'.

Mind you, I have my own misgivings about the way things are written. But "failure to foreshadow characters well in advance" is not one of them, because it's a basic reality of how TV writing works.
