Batman went with the group to the beginning of time to fight the Anti-Monitor and thus was part of the group that wasn't affected by the universe change and kept pre-crisis memories. And here he is remembering the first meeting in the pre-crisis continuity.
Catwoman was not part of the group so when the universe changed in CoIEs she changed with it and thus remembers the post crisis continutiy.

Suicidal in the sense that they killed or like to think they killed their past selves and now live their "lives" as furries who devote their existence to either a higher cause or dangerous gamble. Basically, finding another form of offing themselves without actually doing for real.

For example Bane's suicidal too, but because his entire life has been a continual struggle to survive without respite where he didn't even had time or means to kill himself because his fight or flight instincts would kick in, Bane now as an adult decided to off himself by struggling against an enemy, a "monster" that hopefully will off him. Because in my opinion both him and Catwoman seem to be if we go by what's in the comic. I understand that Batman isn't outright looking for excuses to kill himself like some reckless sob, but he does seem to see the "bat" as a form of death. As if he killed his old self and now being Batman is a form suicide. He's now a dead man. Some ghost.

But despite doing that his existential pain didn't go away, of course, because he's still technically alive. Being Batman and believing his dead or whatever is just his coping mechanism. That and fooling around with Catwoman, because when they're together he doesn't feel so shitty anymore about being alive.

That's what i took from the run. If i'm wrong in my reading, well... what does King wanted to convey then? Why all the talks about killing himself and being dead and constant suffering and kissing the pain away with Catwoman?

It's absolutely stupid. The strong link between Bruce and Selena has never really felt justified to me. They often pull the whole "we both lead two lives" thing, but that's so painfully superficial. It would be like it two people wearing hats used that as the basis for their relationship.

I dropped King's Batman at the end of the first issue of Batman's Suicide Squad, where the whole issue they kept teasing that there was an Arkham inmate that Batman wanted that they wouldn't let him have. My mind was reeling over who it could have been, and then it was just fucking Catwoman.

First off, why is she even in Arkham, and secondly, what's so special about her? She's just a fucking thief. Never cared much for her character. Writers are always overstating her importance to everything simply because she's so popular, but her circumstances are pretty shallow. She should never be more important to any plot than to be an amusing distraction.

Even though I'm usually capable of pretending different books exist in a vacuum from each other. I think if vastly restricts the amount of fun a writer can have if their always beholden to what's going on in other books at the time, but even if this were an elseworld tale where Batman had never opened up to anyone, and for some reason Selena was the only person he felt he had a bond with... it's still pretty fucking dumb.

One of the biggest reasons this approach falls so short is like you said, because of the Bat-family. It makes far more sense, given Batman's origins, for his strongest emotional links to be forged with Robin, to whom he is a father figure, or Alfred, his own father figure.

Given how well King writes Alfred, it's a shame he didn't choose to focus on their relationship a bit more.

I found the Santa Prisca arc really dumb in its conclusions, and the way things unfolded actively to the detriment of the Bane that was being written in the dialogue and narration.

Like I said, I found Catwoman pretty bad too but this couple of issues did a lot to redeem it. Primarily this one - did we need two? Hopefully there's something similar for Bane down the line.

Other anon here. I feel the problem is that these lines are boring to read. In real life, we have tone, accent, inflection, etc, to distinguish people speaking, and the emotion behind the voice. In comics, it doesn't effectively translate the supposed emotion of the words. It just comes off as bland and unworthy of being in a comic.

Of course, one could argue repetitive usage of words has impact in that it carries weight, e.g. a line in situation means something else in another situation. But I'd say King hasn't done that well. Mainly, because I think a lot of the weight of these reused words aren't effective because then presumed impact of these words aren't truly earned within King's story arcs, imo. The decompression, lack of an actual, meaty plot, and unearned dialogue execution just make every further attempt at depth fall apart.

Repetition (when used deliberately) is a literary technique I really like. The main problem I have with King's Batman run is the extent to which it's overdone. It starts feeling like every page is a back and forth echo.
