Michael Eisner was CEO of Disney at the time. Eisner was only interested in profits, and thus spearheaded projects which would pander to the lowest-common-denominator.

Disney was able to gain creative freedom again once Bob Iger took over in 2006 and negotiated the merger with Pixar. After the merger, both Disney and Pixar prospered creatively; Disney started making good movies again.

They didn't use the word "anthropomorphic" in the trailer. Did you know Zootopia was the first ever Disney movie to cater to furries because it had animal characters?
