Sure he would occasionally be a bit too self-righteous but thats better than acting like a cunt all the time like Raph or just being a boring techie like Donnie. In retrospect Mikey is by far the most likable and relatable.

I'm also not sure if I agree with the theory that you pick the turtle that matches your personality. Leo was always my favorite but I've never been a super-responsible or serious kid. I think you pick the turtle you most want to be. Raph kids want to be badass loners.

And most importantly, in the 1990 movie, in which he got the lion's share of the focus. As a kid, it was a big damn deal. He swore, he was angrier and a loner, all of which made him embody the literally darker-and-edgier vibe that made the movie special even if you were a kid who knew nothing about the Mirage Comics.

Of course, he also got to have a little bit of the cartoon snarker in him too - as seen when he shit-talks the Foot on the rooftop, before they Zerg rush him.

Splinter is very perceptive and gave his sons weapons best suited to help them.
-Raph, like you said, got a less lethal tool. A weapon frequently used for crowd control and arrest, a weapon meant to be used just as often for defense as it is for offense. Splinter did this to help curb his aggression, but it also is a weapon that helps protect Raphael if he gets too careless due to having the shortest range out of anyone.
-Michelangelo has a weapon that requires great focus to use. Imagine how much concentration it takes to use two nunchaku at the same time
-Donatello uses a bo staff. There is a lot to consider on the fly when using a bo: making sure you have enough space around you, how much momentum to build up, etc. Don uses his intellect and ability to process information quickly to his advantage here.
-Leonardo's katana are as much a symbolic choice as they are a fighting choice. Splinter probably had Leo picked for the leader role before giving him his weapons, and picked it to encourage Leo's passion for Bushido. Leo most likely cherishes his sword the way a king would cherish theirs a la Arthur and Excalibur

I thought Don and Leo's weapons were for essentially the opposite reasons for Mike and Raph's: A staff is a simple weapon, so Don isn't tempted to overthink what he can do with it and get down to fighting, while swords are more aggressive so Leo's strategic nature is streamlined and he's forced to be more aggressive than he might otherwise be.

As an adult I realize that Raph was the most realistic. Who wouldn't be pissed the fuck off knowing that your place in the world is as a freak show that hides in a sewer and can only count it as a miraculous blessing when someone isn't so revolted by the mere sight of you that they pass out?

It's not edgelording, it's normal based on the reality of the situation. I'm angry a lot during the day because my commute to work is a nightmare coming and going. I can't imagine how loaded with anger, hatred, and constant humiliation I would be if I were Raph.
