In general? I always figured it was an extremist teenage counterculture against conservative Christian upbringings, and those that stuck with it were the kind of isolated feminist that third-wavers would ignore.

In the comic? I think the artist was/is involved in the Wiccan movement, and sees it as a good source of isolated nerd humor that could spiritually succeed comics like Anime Club.

Wicca is watered down occult. Like the retard baby of hermetic Kabbalah. I think it was formed some time after Thelema became less popular. Because it's so watered down and neo-pagan/feel-good/edgy shit it's appealing to people looking for am alternative religion.

I can see how the bird would be into from an angle similar to Clara, that she thinks the wicca stuff is fun. The bee looks like she is wearing a jack-off crystal, so she is more of a mystery.
