Shiro is older than the other Paladins so all ships with him are considered pedophilia by angry tumblr teenagers, especially Shidge (Shiro/Pidge) since Pidge is the youngest. Sheith (Shiro/Keith) gets hated on the most, though, because it's a rival ship to Klance (Keith/Lance), which is the most popular ship in fandom. There's been death threats, doxxing threats, people have even messaged the show's staff about the drama. Some tumblr teenies have compiled lists of "pedophilia supporters" and put anyone who creates Shiro/paladins content on them. One of those lists included an art director who works on the show. It's been pretty wild, but there are even worse fandoms out there.

People who are anti-Shidge/Shieth/whatever age difference ship do it because they have a belief that media will influence the actions of others. If someone sees someone do something on tv or in a story, they'll think it's ok to do it in real life. So if a little kid sees a picture of Pidge kissing Shiro, a switch in their head will flip, and they'll suddenly suddenly become think that hooking up with older guys is ok (or as tumblrinas like to say it'll "normalize" pedophilia to them), and then they will immediately run out the door to find as many cocks to suck as they can.

It's brilliant. That's why it got so popular, it's the perfect way of blatantly censoring others while coming across as a righteous protector of the weak.

So I headcanon this is exactly why Lance never became a fighter pilot until Keith left. He said they were neck and neck for awhile. I'm guessing that was true until Keith got tutelage from Shiro. So once Keith got moved up he started getting called out on not being good enough to move up himself. That he wasn't trying hard enough. Which in turn made him doubt and second guess himself, turning him from a good pilot into an average one.

If Lance didn't move into Fighter ranks until Keith left, it implies Lance was good enough to be the top Cargo pilot but not good enough to be in the Fighter ranks at all (pick an arbitrary number of, say, 50, we don't know what the pilot population of Garrison is). So basically, Lance ranked #51; Keith could have ranked anywhere in the upper 50, even 50 itself, which would make the rivalry very real to Lance, but Keith already being in competition with the other Fighter ranks wouldn't even have noticed Lance existed, Lance being merely Cargo rank.

That's my headcanon on why Lance is so hung up on this and Keith is utterly indifferent to it. Not enough world building was done to be certain of how such things actually were.
