I think you might be overreacting.

Maui was a trickster and a bit of a douche, but he was wholly competent. All his instances of incompetence stemmed either from his own insecurities or other forces within the movie acting against him.

The guy lassoed the sun so he could stretch our days and bring us fun. I don't think you could possibly get more competent than that.

Now that you mention it, the ocean may be the actual problem with the movie that people keep trying to address without finding the proper words. It babies moana throughout the movie, preventing her from growing better as a character or having to achieve anything on her own. People say stuff like Maui is a bumbling idiot to make Moana look good, but this is acually a situation caused by the sea.

Removing the sea as a character would have probably forced a much better narrative, even if Maui was portrayed as goofy, since moana would have come off as more capable through the audience having seen her overcome her problems as opposed to the sea handing out solutions.
