1) Episodes are too short for what they're trying to pull off. This issue has been exasperated in Volume 4, where, because the cast has been split apart so much, the writers can't kill as many birds with one stone by having multiple main characters show up in the same scene and undergo character development together.

2) The writers have some neat ideas and lots of good material to work with, but their execution sometimes (oftentimes?) leave much to be desired. This is partly related to issue #1, but there are other writing issues that plague this show (the MC doesn't have much of a character arc, the major characters that do have character arcs often have theirs start late or go without much development for long periods of time, there's a lot of telling but not much showing to back it up, etc)

Alright, I am giving a completely random episode a try. Okay, volume 4, chapter 1.

Alright, I would call this beginning a 9.5/10.

The characters seem to be all good except for that angry guy. The dark skinned woman is barely good enough. The white bitch, meh, overdramatic for what she is. It's just plain not normal.

Oh cool now some dumbass kid. Alright, its lost my interest a bit. But to be honest its not that bad.

Orange haired girl sounds okay and seems to have a good character. That emo faggot is a horrible voice actor and needs to jump off a bridge. Literally made the scene horrible.

Ruby is too forced. It feels like all the writers of Red Vs Blue took all the worst parts of the series and made it into that faggot and this humour.

This show could be really good, I can see that. But all I see is a bunch of the failing of red vs blue all in one show. It switches genres too much and without any smooth transition. One moment its an intimate moment, the next a zinger. It's just plain old lazy writing.

The only reason it worked in Red Vs Blue is because it was a comedy first without any real world. Beyond that, it was just a machinima *It was expected to be shitty*, I would even argue that's one of its main drawing points as it adds humour.

But we see all of what made Red Vs Blue bad just in that episode alone. Look at season 14 of red vs blue, arguably when the show really went to shit. Both Red Vs Blue and that season share the same problems with writing.

The pacing of RWBY has been a big problem ever since volume 1.

Volume 4 showed that the episodes are not long enough to tell multiple stories at multiple locations. They had problems with that even while mostly everything happened at Beacon during volume 1-3.

Vol 4 may be a bit strenuous episode to episode, but I consider it has been able to play off all 5 of it's plots decently enough.

I agree that added screentime would be better - but I'm not complaining. 5 plots is better than the amount of plot that we had to deal with in seasons 1-3.

Remember that shit? About 3 plots per season. Nothing as long or overarching as Vol 4 - plots resolved themselves extremely quickly.

I'd say it's a good step forward... and we won't have 5 parallel plotlines soon - they'll merge soon enough.

I was alrady expecting to have a good time with RNJR, but I'm surprised I actually ended up enjoying Yang scenes. I was fully expecting brooding central and all I see is bants and the return of best teachers plus Tai.

On the other hands no matter how much I force myself I can't seem to see Weiss and Blake scenes as anything but a drag. The summoned knight last chapter was neat though.

Oscar's scenes, while interesting, get dragged out too much. Especially the first one in episode 1 which people thought at first was pure filler.

Weiss' arcs horribly predictable. Jacques and Whitley are terrible one-dimensional characters. They've really worked hard to make us hate Jacques. Whitley (who appeared out of where) was predictably a smug, plotting shit.

Yang's would had been better if she did not get her arm in her first scene.

I'd have to say RNJR's plot is the most interesting, so I guess Ruby as she's the theoretical lead of that ensemble?
After that, as sporadic and poorly paced as it has been so far, I'm enjoying Yang's story, especially her banter with Tai. Still a little salty the robo arm just turned up one day, even if I do like the sentiment behind it
I find Blake's plot to be better than a lot of people think it is, but not as interested in it as I could be. I mostly rate it because we get some exterior shots of places that aren't just forests this volume
Weiss' is the worst, purely because its so incredibly generic and boring I feel a little sad just watching it. Especially after M&K actually managed to surprise people with Ironwood I was hoping the Atlesian characters would continue that trend. As of now though, Whitley is just a generic rich boy asshat, and its not fun to watch

Oscar is......odd, but I am enjoying his story such as it is. Its all pretty obviously building up to a Star Wars style "ah shit my aunt's farm burned down, guess I should go adventuring for revenge or whatever" ending, but I am enjoying the constant feeling of how 'off' Ozpin is with Oscar while still being as affable as ever.

Am I wrong in thinking that there's some apathy growing in the RWBY fandom? It seems like there's less of a rabid hunger for new episodes in most of the usual discussion spots like here, reddit, tumblr, etc. It seems like people are starting to grow disillusioned with the show as they figure out that they're going back to the glacial pace of the story progression and that the end of Volume 3 wasn't the show "kicking into high gear". Rather, it was just a brief increase in plot momentum that swiftly returned to the average.

Not in order, but I think we will have scenes like these.

- Tyrian meets Salem. He will likely be punished in some way. Salem will also mention something about her next step, which will happen in volume 5. Maybe something about Cinder.

- A scene where Blake and Sun have a real talk. Blake is worried and apologizes to Sun. Ghira now understands that the White Fang are becoming hostile against Blake and her friend, which means he will do some investigating.

- Adam meets Blake again. He attacks, but lets her live. He tells her he's going after Sun and her parents (in volume 5).

- Weiss breaks out from the Schnee Manor with the help from Klein and Ironwood. She asks Ironwood to take her to Haven Academy.

- One more Oscar and Ozpin scene. Oscar is finally convinced to go to Haven academy.

- A Ren and Nora scene where either of them can confess things. Such as Nora loving Ren, or Ren saying he’s gay. I hope both happens. I do not think they are going to die.

- A Jaune and Ruby scene. They finally talk about Pyrrha, Penny, the fall of Beacon, what Qrow said. This is the perfect, and only scene to show and tell how Ruby is feeling, how the ending of volume 3 affected. This is RT’s only chance to show that Ruby is not a static character. Ruby is likely to still being optimistic, whereas Jaune is becoming more cynical. They might argue about things. Ruby and Jaune are attacked by a legendary Grimm, but are saved by Raven, who decides to help Qrow.

- A scene that is meant to establish what Yang will do between volume 4 and 5, and then into volume 5. She tells Tai she wants to find her mom. He says Mistral is a good place to start looking. Tai (and Zwei) are likely to go with her, because it’s a long and dangerous trip. Tai can’t sit in Patch and do nothing. He too should see Raven again. Also, I want to see more scenes with Tai and Qrow together. Yang needs to go to Mistral if there shall ever be a RWBY reunion.

There's less hype now, but that's always been the way with web shows, the first episode always gets way more hits than the finale
As for the "rabid hunger" I find that tends to rely on the quality of the most recent episode. So there was a huge increase in excitement after episode 7 because that was a stand out and very exciting episode, and that hype changed into discussion after the "2 WoR's in an overcoat" episode that was 8. 9 is such a clear "we're setting shit up for the last three episodes" story that there isn't much to talk about except theories on what happens next

And as for people who genuinely thought things would stay as fast paced as they were in volume 3, frankly those people are idiots. Volume 3 only worked because it pulled all the strings laid in the first two volumes together and set fire to the bag, the show couldn't maintain that kind of pace for any length of time

Legit excited to see what happens with RNJR. Slowly finding out how shitty the outside worlds is, getting in over their heads with Tyrian, Qrow letting them in on the truth behind everything, their reactions to the truth/journey especially Jaune's increasing negativity and Ruby seemingly getting fed-up with the secrecy, Ren/Nora's little subplot and now Ruby/Jaune dealing with a dying Qrow. It's pretty exciting and I look forward to their parts every time.

Yang is the 2nd place. Surprised I enjoyed her parts as much as I did. Thought she got the arm a little too fast but Tai is a great addition. Blake's is just weird. Sun at the start was alright but I feel a little annoyed with him lately. I like Blake's parents but they're not enough to make me care about Blake.

Weiss is my favorite but holy shit, they dropped the ball on her. You know how predictable the bullying and dance arc was? How you know the big moment they're setting up and wish they just go ahead with it instead of wasting time? That's what I feel about Weiss' arc because of her family.

1) It's basically shounen anime made by Americans. I like shounen anime, so those aspects of it don't irk me.

2) Character designs for the major characters look pretty great to me, though I'm no art expert.

3) Back when Monty was around, the fight scenes were pretty damn amazing. Sun & Blake vs Torchwick, RWBY vs the Nevermore, and Pyrrha vs CRDL are visual treats to watch.

4) Setting is neat, albeit still needing a lot of fleshing out to do. Aura is a clever way to justify shounen-esque over the top action sequences and minimum gore.

5) The "fairytale characters in anime form" aesthetic is pretty neat.

6) I find some of the characters to be pretty charming despite the writing flaws that mar them. For example, Ruby herself is kinda bland and doesn't really go through much in the way of character arcs, but I find her upbeat and cheerful personality charming.

I'd still say that in terms of overall quality, RWBY has a lot of work cut out for it (as I explained here >>89042862), but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy it nor point out the good bits along with the bad bits.
