At least it isn't Big 2 capeshit.

Guaranteed that only an inferior female could dislike the masterpiece that is Batman v. Superman. Plus, since girls are also inherently casuals, they would not have been able to understand it in the first place.

>>
>>89028288
Saga is pretty shit though, but I know a lot of people that like it. I liked it myself at first, until I saw that it was going no where, was incredibly vapid and was decompressed to shit. My girlfriend liked it too, until she realized the exact same thing. My aunt reads Saga though, she loves it. So you know, different strokes, whatever.

>>89028816

I personally like Saga but it suffers from a big problem that lots of media does. When you start killing lots of characters it becomes hard to become attached to anyone since you know that anyone who gets introduced is just there to get killed off. I think this might be why a lot of people like it at first and then fall off of it.

id say Sandman can be casual, depending on who reads it, but there is a lot of depth and deep pulls from the DC universe in it. And Swamp Thing is popular sure, but I wouldn't call it casual. Its definitely one of the first "british invasion" books people read, and there are casuals that read it, but the work itself is not casual.

>tee-hee don't you just love guy peellaert's colorful pop art aesthetic and eroticism anon? do you also pick up those crepax books I talked about? i'm such a nerd XD
>>
>>89029685
Many reasons. There is no freedom in events. A writer cannot decline an event. An event is forced upon the writers, and every single writer must either obey or leave the publisher. The ideas behind events are not creative ideas because they do not come from creators. At best they come from editors, but just as often they come from marketers and accountants and executives. The execution on those ideas are lacking because the creators resent the event being forced upon them, and so the creators provide the bare minimum of their efforts. Events take existing storylines and derail them, events take beloved characters and destroy them. Events take readers near the edge and burn those readers out, causing those readers enough anger and exhaustion so as to make them give up the medium altogether. Events exist not out of any desire to create something worthwhile, but only out of a desire to create something profitable. Events aren't created with gentle care, but pumped out as if on a factory assembly line. And even then the delays and confusion and broken promises cause trouble for retailers, often leading to customer loss which in turn eventually leads to retailer closure. Evens are a cancer upon the industry.

Only casuals worship events.

So worship Sinestro Corps War all you want, but back to the original point: Blackest Night is shit.
>>
>>89028459
A girl comes up to you asking if they could borrow your comics since they are curious about the medium.
How do you reply /co/?
Alternative scenario: A dude or relative comes up to you asking if you have any Walking Dead.

>>
>>89029886
Well, I'm not buying comics anyway, so most of your arguments are pretty invalid for me. And what with this creators are "forced" meme? Most authors push whatever idea they want inside of events. Rucka pushed BM/WW during BN just for fun.
Blackest Night has tons of great moments, decent dialogs and mostly good art. Also it was good conclusion to Johns long GL run which lead to another great run.

In the second case dude is fucked because I'm not into TWD.
>>
>>89028459
So is the joke that Saga is a shitty comic or only girls like? I'm neither a girl nor have I read it
>>
>>89030426
It's about the action that they take and the justification that they provide for taking that action.

The patrons make the girl uncomfortable enough to leave because "girls don't like comics", but the reason that girls don't like comics is that the patrons always make girls uncomfortable enough to leave.

You shouldn't need to have this explained to you.
>>
>>89030307

The inherent problem with Saga was that it relied on cliffhangers and shocking twists, that usually meant killing characters off, to keep you hooked. Once you read it for couple of arcs and you have any type of self-awareness while reading the comic, the formula becomes pretty apparent and stale, since it's so predictable. That, combined with the constant jumping and no real clear linear storyline made me drop it after like twenty issues when I realized I didn't really care anymore what was happening.

Personally I think those types of conversations are good so that when a person makes a comics-accurate costume with a comics-accurate build, he gets tons of praise. If you get praised by hardcore nerds then you know you've done good.

Why censor yourself?

>The issue is portraying it as the norm, which I'm not really sure it is.

That's the part that triggers /co/. Every single one of them will see and say it's bullshit and that things that happen in this comic never happen in reality because "WELL I'M NOT LIKE THAT" so clearly they think it's all made up.

But then the second you look at the catalogue, you'll see dozens of threads of the exact same behavior that they were saying doesn't exist in fandom and is all just a vicious fiction made up by Dorkin and the feminists and tumblr and whatever other boogeyman of the moment there is.

Women are coddled all their lives because of guys who want to get with them. They are not used to be called out so they break down when they have to leave their safe space. Instead of getting over it, they attempt to run away or force other people to fight for them.

Women are a mess.
>>
>>89031584
It's not the norm. Evan Dorkin makes a point to say that this is about the worst of the worst he's met in his time at conventions and comic book stores.

Honestly if you come on this board with any frequency at all and you can't relate to these conversations you're deluding yourself. He isn't saying all comic fans are like this, just that some of them are and they're pretty fucking funny. Back when I was younger I would read Dork and laugh my ass off because it reminded me of people I knew, it was real 'because it's true' humor that every comic fan could relate to. But nowadays you're all just so desperate to be offended by anything that you forgot how to laugh at yourselves. It's just sad.

Great strawman comic but how about the fact that women do tend to ruin communities? You think people make it up out of thin air? No, they've seen it happen and don't want it to happen again. There's even a pic about how it happens made by /v/ or /tg/ or something. People outside the community come in just to socialize and casualize the hobby. Women joining is the beginning of the end.

also notice how they never make any mention of actually teaching newcomers. If they had actually shown green the ropes, then by the time brown showed up green would be a third black. most of the browns would also be black by the time pink showed up, and even if she was just there for attention, in a community of mostly blacks she would ave had to become a black herself to get proper validation, which would be zero problem because, oh shit, she's actually good at the game

The only way to end the Marvel/DC console wars on /co/ is to shift /co/'s perception of comics from a two-publisher game to an unlimited-publisher game. Oh great anon please inform what comics apparently is that I am missing. What is this grand mystery called "comic" that I apparently don't love. Comics is nothing more than a style of storytelling with drawings and dialog.
>>
>>89032875
You can only say you love comics if you love every single "comic book" ever made. If you dislike anything, anything at all, it means you're a poser.
>>
>>89032808
That is because of /co/'s perception of comics in which there are only two publishers. If there are only two publshers then anything which impacts one publisher negatively is automatically seen as originating from the other publisher. But if /co/ acknowledges comics as an intersection of unlimited publishers then no one can say where a criticism is coming from, and the criticism is free to exist on its own.

Remove the two-company perception and you can remove the "companywars bait" paradigm.

To save /co/, we must downplay the role of Marvel and DC in all our conversations from now on.

>The superhero genre is anything but a tiny part of the "medium" I'm pretty sure the total some of superhero comics pushed is greater than every other genre combined.
For a tiny moment, let's restrict this conversation to mainstream monthly comic books. Historically, superhero comics were a minority until the sixties. You have the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties with superheroes as a majority, but before that period and after that period, most comics coming out were/are non-superhero. Go turn the pages of a Previews sometime. Even though superhero comics get the most sales, they aren't most of what's available.

Let's expand the conversation and get out of the mainstream. You know those comic books that aren't distributed by the direct market? The underground? The small press comics and the self-published comics? Let me tell you, 99% of those comics aren't superhero comics. They fell off a bit after the seventies, but rest assured, they're back nowadays and they're coming out all the time.

Let's expand the conversation again. Comics don't only come out in comic books. Comics also come out as strips. Magazine comics. Newspaper comics. Webcomics. You bet your bippy most of them aren't about superheroes. Moving on.

Let's expand the conversation once more. OOPS, we've only been talking about America until now. Did you forget that America is only one country out of many? In the rest of the world, people make comics as well, and most of the time they aren't about superheroes. In fact, though it might cause you pain to admit this, manga is comics too.

The vast majority of comics are non-superhero comics. The superhero genre is a tiny part of the medium, and to think otherwise indicates that you don't understand comics.

I'd argue that in the 40's there was just as much superhero as crime/horror/Sci fi/funny animal. There are tons of superhero books that have fallen into obscurity from that era. I am well aware however that heroes took a backseat in the 50's. Since you want to expand the focal point to manga, I'd strongly argue that the majority of Shonen should count as superhero.

>There are tons of superhero books that have fallen into obscurity
And everything non-superhero is obscure to you. You are not the expert that you think you are.

My focal point isn't manga, I'm saying that Asian comics are just as valid as American comics or European comics or any other continent (except Antarctica, which produces nothing). Add up _all_ the different types of comics together, and no matter what you want to "argue" that something "should count" as, cape comics are fucking DWARFED.

But alas, you will continue to tell people that you appreciate the entire medium, despite the fact that you refuse to read anything outside a tiny niche, and nothing I can ever tell you will convince you to reconsider your ways.

The problem is that every time I see another company's "best" I get disappointed. There's a huge backlog of extremely high quality DC and Marvel comics, why should I settle for some other no name trash comic just to get validation from anonymous posters on an anime message board? It's just a waste of time.

Here's the thing though: there WERE other companies that had really good comics, but they got bought by one of the big 2 already, so now they're counted under them. Charlton Comics for example is really good, and Captain Marvel is really good, but they're under DC now.

Company wars make sense over on /v/ where most people grew up only able to afford one console and so became irrationally attached and "loyal" to it.

It doesn't transfer as well over to comics where most people grew up reading both and have attachments to characters from each of the big two. This suggests it's the late-comers, the /v/ and /tv/ shitheads who got into comics as a result of the movie franchises (which is 90% of what they argue over anyway) who are into company wars nonsense.
>>
>>89035000

Way to go backwards.

>This suggests it's the late-comers, the /v/ and /tv/ shitheads who got into comics as a result of the movie franchises (which is 90% of what they argue over anyway) who are into company wars nonsense.
Those people are approaching the majority of /co/mrades now.

You won't convince them to change their ways by insisting that they can appreciate both of the Big Two equally.

You can only convince them to change their ways by making the Big Two irrelevant in your conversations, forcing them to venture away from the movies in order to participate in your discussions.

I'm in the middle. I don't love it, I don't hate it, I just don't care for it. Every issue ends with a shocking twist, be it [character utters a devastating revelation] or [character barges into scene to save/ruin the day] or [character suddenly dies]. There is only one sense of humor in the comic; the characters all share the exact same comedic sensibilities, or they're the blockheads that the other characters make their jokes about. Every character has the same voice, a disaffected world-weary urbanite from LA or NYC. It tries too hard to be shocking, with over-the-top in-your-face violence and sexual content presented with too much irony and not enough sincerity. It just isn't for me.

mfw that guy worked at my local comic shop

Though he did take submissions from all around the country. He did say one of the shops he worked at was down the street from a Methadone clinic.

I got one of his prints at a con and have it framed in my room. Kinda similar to this one.

Yeah. Honestly, I find this whole thread really disappointing. /co/ is in such a rush to froth at the mouth about girls ruining their hobby that they shit all over someone who has been an obvious nerd for her entire career. By all indication she has been into scifi and games and comics since basically forever. Her first role was in Silent Hill, for gods sake.

She is the sort of person that I would expect to be a darling around here, but instead its just vitriol.

>There's even a pic about how it happens made by /v/ or /tg/ or something. People outside the community come in just to socialize and casualize the hobby.
As a fa/tg/uy I welcome any woman that wants to roll dice and pretend to be elves with us. This hobby by it's nature needs as many bodies as possible, and having women play (usually) makes guys less obnoxious. The very presence of a woman causes men to produce more serotonin. That's scientifically proven shit.

Wow. /tg/ here, I can tell you that this would get laughed right the fuck off our board.

Traditional Games are a social event. You play them with friends because you LIKE THOSE FRIENDS. The drinking and talking and whatnot is already happening since day one. If it isn't, its because your 'friends' are just warm bodies that you technically need because you want someone to play against, which means that your real problem is that you are a misanthrophic fuck who has to be forced into social interaction by necessity.

Basically all of our hobbies have a significant number of female players, even if not every individual game group does. Dudebros play magic and Dnd too. Although the idea that 'alphas' will crash the DnD game in my living room to flirt and pick up chicks is so pants on head retarded I can't barely even describe how dumb it is.

This is just entitlement and poor social skills coddled in a comforting 'no true scotsman' blanket and sucking its thumb for support.
>>
>>89042031
>Yeah, problem is that you're a piece of shit scumbag ruining my fandom with your autism
How?
Right now you're the only one who ruins anything ,because of your desire to start meaningless conversations, that are not even related to the fandom, for the sole purpose to jerk off your own ego.
>Get the fuck out and back to /r9k/ where you belong, you permavirgin.
Coming from a pleb with no taste nor opinion believing that his opinion matters simply because he has it.
>>
>>89033949
this

That's because originally it was called degradation of a group.
And the major reason why /tg/ is the newfag board.
>>
>>89040573
Why is he posing with a fake geek girl in his imagination? Doesn't that mean that owning a comics shop made him into a casual?
>>
>>89041699
>and having women play (usually) makes guys less obnoxious. The very presence of a woman causes men to produce more serotonin.
That's the problem. I want people to act normally and women come in and mess them up. Ugh.

Honestly, if you don't support making radical changes to China's environmental regulations, you've got no business bitching about climate change.
>>
>>89043049
China is already making radical changes to China's environmental regulations.

But even if they weren't, "those guys are polluting so it's okay for me to pollute too" is no excuse. Republicans are supposed to be the party of personal responsibility, so they should go ahead and take responsibility instead of blaming it on some other country.
