Will it win the Oscar?
>>
>>89021706
Why wouldn't it?

Wait better question: Who cares?
>>
>>89021706
Considering its message on improving racial relations, I think it'll give it an edge over the competition
>>
>>89021706
I rerally hope it doesn't but Disney already has it in the bag because the voters don't even watch the movies, they just go by the brand name.
>>
It will win the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Even Pixar can't boast one of those.
>>
I'd be more surprised if it doesn't.
>>
>>89021706
It's a fucking Disney movie that all the kids loved.
Why are you even considering the possibility that it might NOT win?
>>
>>89021816
Because it wasn't the only one?

I wasn't arguing in favour of either one. But Moana does have a Disney princess.

You know the academy judges for best animated feature are deranged anyway, though.

The academy judges view Animation as a joke of a medium so they vote for what their kids liked.
At least that's why Frozen won.

Yes.

Not because its good, mind. Because the judges don't give a flying smelly fuck about animation and either decline to vote or just give it to whatever the most popular Disney movie of the year was, just so they can wash their hands of it and move on to the other categories.
>>
>>89021706
If it does, everyone will think Disney bought the jury.
>>
>>89021706
The academy almost always picks Disney for best animated picture. They snubbed Lego Movie and gave the oscar to Big Hero 6 instead. Zootopia should still win. I just wish the Oscars didn't favor Disney 24/7.
>>
No because Your Name. was better.
>>
>>89022334

This is true, but Moana is closer to the awards season and fresher in people's minds. Then again, maybe election-season fears will keep Zootopia relevant.

Yeah, but just having the Thanksgiving time slot only means it's still in theaters during the Academy's nomination period, not that it's still big and everywhere. Frozen came out during Thanksgiving and was #1 at the box office first weekend of January. Moana also came out during Thanksgiving and is down to 8th place and the small auditoriums at the end of the hallway in theaters.

That first voter is a real shithead. Reminds me of someone I knew in real life that was a self-described movie buff that considered animation to be child's play. When me and a friend were having a discussion on which was better- Coraline or Up- Buffy chimed in and stated that no animated film could ever reach the heights of live actions and then cited The Blind Side as the pinnacle of cinema. I honestly feel like it has a good shot. Hollywood is still in full damage control over Trump and are willing to take every opportunity to say "Trump is literally Satan" and of all the contenders, Zootopia is perceived to be the most at odds with what they perceive Trump to be all about (right or wrong)

I like Zootopia and wish it the best but if by some amazing turn of events Kubo won it, I wouldn't be disappointed. If nothing else, I feel like Kubo not only deserves it but of all the candidates really needs it

In the catholic church, you can make a mass on tv or radio count if you find yourself actually unable to assist physically, such as being bed-ridden due to old-age/illness. And you need to get a priest or minister assist to your home every time he can for confession and Eucharist..

>>
>>89021706

>>
Kubo deserves it, but it has absolutely no chance. Here's my breakdown:

50% chance Moana
40% chance Zootopia
8% chance Finding Dory
2% chance they're feeling edgy and choose Sausage Party (I really fucking hope not)

>"Obscure Fuckin' Chinese Thing" made in Ireland

>>
>>89029704

bcause of message or becuase its disney?
>>
>>89029885
The thing is, some of the Academy members are just aware enough to know they brush off the category; so after getting the petty flak for it over a few years they see some convenient non-Disney adult thing to choose. Combine that with "first adult animated movie" (which it really isn't but they probably don't know that) and Rogen's up-your-asshole "social commentary," and I could see it having a weird little clique.
>>
>>89029676
Which one where you?
>>
>>89021706
Its odds are about 50/50 between it and Moana.
Depends on what movie Academy voters were forced to watch by their kids.
>>
>>89029826
I'd say it's more like 60% Zootopia and 40% Moana now that Zootopia won the Golden Globe.

Academy Voters will likely take that as an excuse to give it to Zootopia over Moana

To qualify, a film has to play in Los Angeles County in at least one theater for a full set of shows for at least one week. It played at Laemmle's Music Hall in Beverly Hills from December 2-8, so it's nomination-eligible.

An actual for-the-masses wider release might still be on the table for later this year, even if that only means a double-digit theater count. Perhaps if it wins a nomination.

The Academy aren't critics: they're insiders. They're divided into the following categories:

Actors
Casting Directors
Cinematographers
Costume Designers
Designers
Directors
Documentary
Executives
Film Editors
Make-up Artists and Hairstylists
Music
Producers
Public Relations
Short Films and Feature Animation
Sound
Visual Effects
Writers

Of the 6,000 or so members, how many do you think are from the "Short Films and Feature Animation" branch? How many of those are animators? Hollywood doesn't take animation seriously; they cynically look at them as Disney toy commercials, and they're not far off from the mark. Until the next Disney comes into existence and memes an adult animated (read: not comedy) picture back into success, it'll remain obscure and denigrated in Hollywood.

I should point out too that Hollywood as of late has been especially up their own ass with these awards. They've always been self-congratulatory, but there is merit to the criticism that they politicize nominations and purposely shun even critical successes because they're popular with the public.

>>89042366
Because girls need messages and role models. You don't want them to not have that, do you?
>>
>>89042669
The message is to be a small bunny. They're not hearing that enough from the rest of society.

Come to think of it where do plays go are they just in a sort of limbo if they have a home why does the wwe not go there.

Anyway point is if they film a match it can probably qualify

It will only because some will abstain and some will vote for it because it's the only one they know. I lost respect for any animation awards at the oscars a few years back. They don't take animation seriously at the oscars.
>>

Don't forget Big Hero 6 *shudders*
>>
>>89022451
This.

Zootopia is a deserving winner, it just comes after a long line of undeserving Disney/Pixar films winning on brand-name alone so it'll get unfairly lumped in.

Reminder that HTTYD2 was supposed to kick Frozen to the curb and finally shut up all those Frozenfags once and for all.
Reminder that HTTYD2 got nowhere near a billion dollars, godammit
>>
>>89045036
Blame the gay Gobber controversy, and the fact that it didn't have the Disney brandname on it (also it was 'too dark')

Had it been a Disney film it wouldn't matter if there were a dozen gay characters, it would have made a gorillion because 'muh house of mouse'.

Also I am a massive HTTYD fanboy and was crushed it lost... but SoTS and Kaguya were the two best animated films that year.

That all three, plus an un-nominated Lego Movie, lost to Disney capeshit should tell you all you need to know about the Best Animated Feature Category at the Oscars.
>>
>>89045036
it wasn't has interesting as 1 and was fairly generic too
>>
>>89045070
Generic never hurt Disney films though.

People are sheep. They get all up in arms about generic storylines and pointless sequels unless their precious house of mouse does it... then they're more than happy to throw money at it.

Also if the general public didn't like generic they wouldn't have made films like Minions become massive hits.
>>
>>89043734
The Annies are just as much of a joke as the Oscars.
>>
Pros: generally well received, made a billion dollars worldwide, major studio release
Cons: came out in March and most Academy voters won't remember it.
>>
>>89021706
Its not a contest, historically, these have always gone to the studio that smoozes the judges the most. Disney has the most money to smooze with. They'll win. The question is which of their movies is disney more proud of? Amnesia Fish, Furtopia, and Ocean Elsa?
>>
>>89045377
Cons: It's also a shitty movie
>>
>>89046202
Zootopia was both the most well received and made a killing at the box office

Dory had similar reception but didn't get nearly as much buzz online as Zootopia did

And Moana is just Moana

I'm pretty sure the 'sheep' don't get up in arms about generic movies. But if there's less people saying the movie is the shit, you're more likely to hear the honest opinion of the parents which is "it was generic"

But if it makes their kids happy, it's less a problem that it was so generic
>>
It'll it's disney, it's a good movie, it won the Golden Globe, and they go for the Oscar, stop complaining, it doubles, even triples the little thing it was Moana, or other films, it's a great movie
>>
>>89021706
Will it get a cartoon spin-off like Tangled and Big Hero 6?

Because I want a cartoon spin-off, Goodwin can return but they going to have to get a new Nick since Bateman is expensive.

Ma Vie de Courgette (My Life as a Zucchini) was by far the best. Had a Golden Globe nom and will probably get an Oscar nom as well, despite having no chance at winning the damn statue. Write it down, add it to a watchlist, point is, if it ever comes out in the US outside of a few festivals (where I saw it) make sure to see it. It's spectacular, and as is the case with many recent foreign animated films, it dances circles around Disney efforts.

Speaking of which, I don't think I've ever seen a thread for it. Is there anybody who's at least heard of it and is interested?
>>
>>89051638
>>89050141
Bateman alone is likely the reason they'll probably never do a show. That is unless it focuses on other characters

But otherwise too expensive
>>
>>89032186
Yup. Honest and cut to the chase. The point of the film is to entertain as well as tell a story. You can make an absolutely gorgeous animated feature and if it misses the mark on the above points, it's more of a work of art than a damned movie.
I guess I'm saying from personal bias, animation and artistic value take a (slight) back seat to the purpose of what's being presented.
Voter 6 appears to be on the same page.
>>
>>89052506

>defending the retarded voter who voted based on what their kids liked
>defending the decision to give Big Hero shit an Oscar over far more deserving films

Absolutely disgusting.
>>
>>89050185
Then just replace kids with grandkids, its the same fucking thing.

But the mid-aged academy members with kids think the exact same fucking way.

Best Animated Feature for 2012, 2013, and 2014 are arguably some of the worst, most aggravating decisions made by the Academy ever.
>>
>>89046505

You don't believe it was a B movie, don't you? You don't hire 150 people to make a side project.Ot was meqnt to be a metch seller. But they fucked it up.This movie reminds me of Kingdom of the sun/Emperors New Groove, it faced similar problems: writers who had no idea what were they doing.

It was very nice revival era, now it's time for mediocre sequels era.
>>
given that it is cultural marxism: the animated feature yes it will probably win
>>
>>8903212

What the fuck was that?!
>>
>>89023940
If that wins an oscar, the director might kill himself. He apparently hates that its become so popular.
>>
>>89055983
I can understand why someone wouldn't like it if their work made people constantly bother them, but don't people usually make art in the hopes as many people will see what their message is as possible?
>>
>>89021706
The voters for the Oscars literally don't watch any animation their kids don't watch.

IIRC one of them called Song of the Sea 'nip trash.'

Zootopia will sweep it.
>>
>>89052395

interesting. not familiar with modern american sitcom actors but I remember people not being sold on Judy's VA, they ran out of time to seek for someone new.Another proof he put all the eggs into his "muh fursona the movie" basket.

>>
>>89057018
>'nip trash.'
It was "two Chinese fucking things", song of the Sea and Tale of Kaguya, which was Japanese.
>>
>>89021706

>>
>>89057620
Jesus fuck, how hard is it to get animation fans on that panel?

Or at least people who will take the time to see the god damned movies they're judging!
>>
>>89058292
>Jesus fuck, how hard is it to get animation fans on that panel?
I think animators and people in Animated films are just underrepresented in the Academy or something. I was going to say it's a function of what movies are made, but tons of animated films get made each year, and each movie with computer animation has a shit ton of people working on it. I think there may just be a slant to the academy members.
